World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of distance learning methods and technologies. A brief history is given from inception and traces its continuous development from initial implementation to current practices. A comparison with traditional learning was done, outlining the various attributes of the two concepts, where intrinsic and extrinsic influencing factors are described. Despite the fact that distance learning has been practised formally in one form or another for the past hundred years, it has not and still is, not fully regarded and accepted within the educational system. Since its inception in the form of Correspondence, it has been looked upon …

Outrigger Design And The Stability Of Outrigger Boats, Benedicto Mercado Selirio

World Maritime University Dissertations

Philippine outrigger boats are small wooden boats that have the distinct characteristics of a very slender hull and bamboo outriggers at each side. The study focuses on the outrigger design and their effect on boat stability. The main idea is to see if there is any design flaw to make the boat susceptible to capsizing. The paper briefly looks into the social and economic significance of outrigger boats in the Philippines and their various uses. It examines recent boat accidents involving boats that capsized and their probable cause. A review of basic outrigger boat parts introduces readers to the boat …

Proposal For An Effective Legal Framework To Protect The Marine Environment From Pollution : The Case Of Plastic Garbage Pollution In The Coastal Waters Of Tanzania, Farida Idrisa

World Maritime University Dissertations

There is an increasing amount of man-made debris that litterthe world's oceans and coastal waters, and associated problems which this brings. This debris consists mostly of persistent materials such as plastics, metal. glass and rubber. This dissertation provides an insight into problems and threats associated with plastic garbage. 'Apart from its persistence in the environment, plastics float for years and are concentrated into specific location by ocean currents causing permanent and irreversible damage to the marine ecosystem. Thus, sources and impacts of plastics into the marine environment are discussed. The increase in population. industrialisation. urbanisation and the rising standards of …

Nigerian Maritime Administration : Its Role In Marine Environmental Protection : A Case Study On The Escravos Oil Terminal, Niger Delta, Mudi I. Isa Dec 1997

Nigerian Maritime Administration : Its Role In Marine Environmental Protection : A Case Study On The Escravos Oil Terminal, Niger Delta, Mudi I. Isa

World Maritime University Dissertations

The dissertation is an attempt to examine the Nigerian oil industry and its impact on the environment. The world pre occupation in recent years, with green house gas emission and climatic changes has tended to over shadow an equally important problem, oil pollution either land based or marine. Oil spills have an equally devastating impact on the environment, especially in developing countries which have little or no capacity to deal with this problem. Thus the focal point of this paper is to analyse the Nigerian oil sector and the environmental impact of its activities. This involves identifying sectors within the …

Protection Of Bangladesh Waters Against Accidental Oil Pollution From Ships, Khondaker Md. Asaduzzaman

World Maritime University Dissertations

Bangladesh, as being a flag, coastal and port state, has a genuine concern about the threat of oil pollution from marine transportation in its waters. However, her concern for accidental oil pollution from ships is not adequately matched by appropriate preventive and remedial measures. As a result, the country continues to be in an absolutely vulnerable position with respect to the dangers of oil pollution. This dissertation is a study of the need for and the ways of protecting the marine environment of Bangladesh from oil pollution incidents. The threats of accidental spills in Bangladesh waters are discussed and the …

The outcome indicates that the influence of the integrated bridge systems (IBS) and the one man bridge operation (OMBO) have an effect on the shipping industry; the new MET educational methodology and technology also have a deep impact on the traditional way of education in Chinese MET …

Global Warming: A Threat To Human Societies And Natural Ecosystems, Yunus D. Mgaya Dec 1997

Global Warming: A Threat To Human Societies And Natural Ecosystems, Yunus D. Mgaya

Tanzania Journal of Science

The possible influences of increases of mean sea surface temperatures are briefly reviewed. It is virtually certain that human activities are changing the composition and behavior of the atmosphere, leading to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. Recent analyses and model predations show that risks to human societies and natural ecosystems from enhanced greenhouse effect may be large. A rising sea level could result in quite dramatic changes in maritime boundaries (as states to act to protect their maritime zones. It is concluded that in setting management goals with respect to mitigating the effects of global warming, one needs to recognize …

Module Embedding, Atanas Radenski Dec 1997

Module Embedding, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper proposes a code reuse mechanism called module embedding that enables the building of new modules from existing ones through inheritance, overriding of procedures, and overriding of types; the paper also describes an implementation scheme for this mechanism. Module embedding is beneficial when modules and classes are used in combination and need to be extended together, or when modules are more appropriate medium than classes.

New Topologies And Parallel Algorithms For Static Interconnection Networks., Srabani Sen Gupta Dr. Dec 1997

New Topologies And Parallel Algorithms For Static Interconnection Networks., Srabani Sen Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Many real-life applications in the areas of signal processing, image processing, etc., require a large amount of fast computations to be performed. Although high speed powerful processors are currently available due to the phenomenal advances in VLSI technology, the increasing demand for massive real-time computations can not be met just by a uniprocessor system. One way of achieving the goal of fast computation is through parallel processing. In parallel processing, a problem is broken into several subproblems, which are distributed among different processors so that each of the processors can perform its task simultaneously. Main areas of recent research in …

Porphyry And Plotinus On The Reality Of Relations, Dirk Baltzly Dec 1997

Porphyry And Plotinus On The Reality Of Relations, Dirk Baltzly

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Both Plotinus and Porphyry contribute in their own ways to the tradition of neoplatonic commentaries on Aristotle’s Categories. In 6.1-2, Plotinus argues that Aristotle’s ten categories are not adequate as an account of the genera of Being and that for this purpose they ought to be supplanted by the five greatest kinds from Plato’s Sophist. In 6.3, he acknowledges that it would be desirable to have a system of categories, not genera, for the sensible realm. He proposes several reductions of Aristotle’s ten categories to more compact schemes and finally seems to settle on the number five: composite, relative, quantity, …
