Biosynthetic Studies Of The Bryostatins, Anticancer Agents From The Marine Bryozoan Bugu/A Neritina, Joseph Lawry Jan 1997

Biosynthetic Studies Of The Bryostatins, Anticancer Agents From The Marine Bryozoan Bugu/A Neritina, Joseph Lawry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The bryostatins are a family of macrolide lactones isolated from the marine bryozoan Bugu/a neritina. Since its detection in 1968, bryostatin 1 has demonstrated remarkable anticancer, immunopotentiating, biomodulatory and radioprotective effects which result mainly from its ability to activate protein kinase C, a family of isozymes involved in cellular signal transduction. It is currently being tested in several phase I and phase II clinical trials as a potential anticancer drug for leukemia, melanoma and nephrotoma. A series of experiments was undertaken to elucidate the biosynthetic origins of bryostatin, using a fortified crude cell-free enzyme preparation and radiolabelled precursors. A regional …

Balanced Hypercube: A Versatile Cube-Based Multicomputer System, Ke. Huang Jan 1997

Balanced Hypercube: A Versatile Cube-Based Multicomputer System, Ke. Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

We propose the balanced hypercube (BH), which is a variant of the standard hypercube (Q), as a multicomputer topological structure. An n-dimensional balanced hypercube BHn has the same desirable topological properties of the 2n-dimensional standard hypercube Q2n such as size (2^2n nodes and n2^2n edges), regularity and symmetry, connectivity (2n node-disjoint pathes between any pair of nodes), and diameter (2n when n = 1 or n is even). Moreover, BHn has smaller diameter (2n-1) than Qn's (2n) when n is odd other than 1. In addition, BHn is load balanced, i.e., for every node v of BHn, there exists another …

Calibration Of Seepage From Steady State Simulation For Water Budget Estimation, Angela Alvarez Prymas Jan 1997

Calibration Of Seepage From Steady State Simulation For Water Budget Estimation, Angela Alvarez Prymas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Water gain/loss through seepage in the Everglades Nutrient Removal (ENR) project is a major component of the water budget. Seepage is the most difficult component to evaluate because most of its constituents cannot be directly measured. For this reason simulations from models or equations are the common procedure to estimate seepage. These procedures involve a series of assumptions and simplifications (i.e., geometry, soil parameters), which can be validated with a calibration-verification process. The accuracy of the water budget for this wetland treatment is very important because it will help to clarify and quantify, together with the nutrient mass budgets, the …

Behavior Of Eccentrically Loaded Slender Concrete Columns Reinforced With Cfrp Bars, Wei. Xia Jan 1997

Behavior Of Eccentrically Loaded Slender Concrete Columns Reinforced With Cfrp Bars, Wei. Xia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In a highly corrosive environment, corrosion is the main factor leading to deterioration and eventual failure of conventional reinforced or prestressed concrete structures. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are considered as an alternative to steel reinforcement due to its excellent corrosion resistance. This investigation was conducted to establish the feasibility of using CFRP cables as reinforcing elements in reinforced concrete columns. Besides investigating durability of CFRP cables in adverse environments (alkali and sea water) experimental and theoretical studies were carried out to study the behavior of CFRP reinforced concrete slender columns under combined axial load and bending moment. Exposure to …

Cathodic Polarization Behavior Of Mild Steel Exposed To Selected Flow Velocities And Slope Parameters In Natural Seawater, G. Dickson Iv Hugus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Twenty-four test cells arranged in a pipe flow setup were assembled to investigate the effect of seawater velocity on the polarization behavior of galvanically polarized mild steel. Each 1023 steel pipe specimen of 10.8 em ID was coupled via a current limiting resistor to a mercury activated aluminum anode and exposed to a velocity of either 0.03, 0.09 or 0.30 m/s. The resistors were sized such that polarization was controlled according to one of six slope parameters. Steady state potential and maintenance current density values were determined, and a steady state potential vs. current density curve was established for specimens …

Changes In Photoemission Spectra Across The Order/Disorder Transition In Copper-Gold Alloys, Wei Liu Jan 1997

Changes In Photoemission Spectra Across The Order/Disorder Transition In Copper-Gold Alloys, Wei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy has been used in this project to investigate the changes in photoemission spectra across the order/disorder transition in Cu-Au alloys. Many obvious changes are observed in the valence band spectra of the different phases, particularly in the area of Au-related states. In Cu3Au, the binding energy of Au-4f core levels in the ordered phase are shifted from the pure metal value by an average of 0.46 +- 0.05eV to increased binding energy. In CuAu, the corresponding shift value in the ordered phase is 0.33 +- 0.05eV, also to increased binding energy. In both disordered Cu3Au and CuAu …

Children's Temperament: Does It Predict How Children Cope During Conflicts With Parents?, Gordon Bryant Iii Zellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to explore relations between children's temperament and their coping styles during mother-child conflict. The children in this study (47 boys and 59 girls in the fourth through seventh grades) were measured using maternal reports of nine discrete temperament dimensions. These nine dimensions were reduced to three factors labeled Agreeableness, Rhythmicity, and Restraint. The children also reported on seven dimensions of coping during conflict with their mothers. Factor analysis indicated that these seven dimensions also could be reduced to two factors, labeled Defiant Coping and Helpless Coping. Partial correlations (with the effect of age removed) …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant differences existed between female administrators and female faculty in public higher education in their perceptions of personal self-efficacy and their personal attributes. This was achieved by examining the relationship between the criterion variable, position held by females in higher education and the predictor variables, which included male and female characteristics, general self-efficacy beliefs, and social self-efficacy beliefs. A survey package including a demographics section, Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ) and Self-Efficacy Scale for Adults (SES) was mailed to 200 female administrators and 200 female faculty employed by Florida's State University System. …

Colonization Of Infauna And Fiddler Crabs In A Newly Constructed Mangrove Environment, Christie Bunting Mcvay Jan 1997

Colonization Of Infauna And Fiddler Crabs In A Newly Constructed Mangrove Environment, Christie Bunting Mcvay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Colonization of infauna in a newly constructed mangrove environment at Spanish River Park, Boca Raton, Florida was studied for six months following initial site preparation. Monthly core samples for benthic invertebrates were collected from December 1994 to June 1995. Sampling stations were chosen randomly each month in three zones along two transects across a tidal channel: upper mangrove, lower mangrove, and mangrove/Spartina. Fiddler crab burrows were counted within randomly placed square meter quadrats in each zone. Rapid succession over short-term indicated the constructed environment would eventually become an established, functional mangrove community. Natural infaunal colonization began immediately, and a total …

Community Representation In The Planning Process And Its Impact On The Landscape: A Study Of The South Dade U.S. 1 Corridor Project, Martin A. Schneider Jan 1997

Community Representation In The Planning Process And Its Impact On The Landscape: A Study Of The South Dade U.S. 1 Corridor Project, Martin A. Schneider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis looks at how political decisions influence the design and outcome of planning processes and how these decisions influence the urban landscape. This study looks at one specific planning process and compares the results of two different planning workshops to show how differences in representation and information dissemination can lead to different outcomes. The first workshop had broad representation and was educated by planning experts, while the second consisted of only local community representatives and was not influenced by planning professionals. Although similar, each workshop had different visions and different priorities. This shows that participatory processes have to be …

Convergence Properties Of The Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Method, Nassrin Y. Moghadam Jan 1997

Convergence Properties Of The Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Method, Nassrin Y. Moghadam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Within the Green's function approach to the multiple scattering theory, we present a different formalism for the screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) scheme. In addition, we investigate the convergence properties of the screened KKR by performing total energy and density of states calculations for a fcc copper. Finally, we introduce a new approach to (near) tight binding calculations of the screened tau-matrix that yields total energies within the desired accuracy.

Control Of Response Of Tall Multi-Story Buildings Under Wind Excitation, Xin. Qiu Jan 1997

Control Of Response Of Tall Multi-Story Buildings Under Wind Excitation, Xin. Qiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Theoretical investigation is carried out into the extent to which floor accelerations of a wind-excited tall building can be reduced by increasing damping in those components in a building which are generally regarded to be non-structural elements, and by using active control. The wind loads are modeled as stochastic processes, which are correlation-stationary in time. Only the drag wind forces are considered in the analyses. The spectral densities and cross-spectral densities of two commonly used models, proposed by Davenport and by Simiu, are compared. The Davenport spectrum is used in the numerical calculation for illustration purposes. Several structural models are …

Correctness Analysis Of Cache Conherence Protocols Using Petri Nets, Ahmed Kamal Hassan Jan 1997

Correctness Analysis Of Cache Conherence Protocols Using Petri Nets, Ahmed Kamal Hassan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The use of cache memories in multiprocessor systems increases the overall systems performance. Caches reduce the amount of network traffic and provide a solution to the memory contention problem. However, caches introduce memory consistency problems. The existence of multiple cache copies of a memory block will result in an inconsistent view of memory if one processor changes a value in its associated cache. Cache coherence protocols are algorithms designed in software or hardware to maintain memory consistency. With the increased complexity of some of the more recent protocols, testing for the correctness of these protocols becomes an issue that requires …

'Delicious Riot Of Things': Aspects Of Discontinuity In "Tristram Shandy", William B. Gerard Jan 1997

'Delicious Riot Of Things': Aspects Of Discontinuity In "Tristram Shandy", William B. Gerard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Tristram Shandy is a famously formless text in which the "life and opinions" of the title character appear to spill forth from the narrator without a governing theme or structure. Chronology and plot are interrupted and re-ordered. Characters are defined as mere fragments of personality, "strokes of a pen"; objects are represented as broken, snarled, and discombobulated. The subtexts and digressive tales included within the novel are incomplete as well as disruptive of the larger whole. Sterne withholds the "complete" picture a conventional novel provides, and fragmentation becomes the prevailing motif of his book: the author's motley meaning lies hidden …

Culturally Derived Watersheds And Their Effect On The Spectral Signatures Of Vegetation In The Dupuis Reserve, Eric James Householder Jan 1997

Culturally Derived Watersheds And Their Effect On The Spectral Signatures Of Vegetation In The Dupuis Reserve, Eric James Householder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Like so many natural areas in south Florida, the Dupuis Reserves' landscape has gone through extreme alteration due to numerous cultural activities. Activities including drainage, cattle ranching, and citrus farming have altered the reserves natural hydrology causing the formation of several watersheds. This hydrologic alteration has caused the once homogenous ecosystem to fragment into two separate landscapes: one dominated by drainage and human impact while the other remains in a relatively natural state. This study will attempt to determine, with the use of remote sensing, geographic information systems and digital image classifications if culturally derived watersheds cause significant change in …

Data And Information Communication Through Piping Network, Moutia Elhoussain El Jan 1997

Data And Information Communication Through Piping Network, Moutia Elhoussain El

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ability of using piping networks as a communication channel using power line communication transceivers. Two ways by which a piping network is able to propagate waves are investigated. The first wave propagation method is through the pipe shell. Using structural waves and PZT type transducers, data packets are sent and received through the propagation of structural waves in the pipe shell. However, because of the dispersive behavior of quasi flexural radial waves, the data packets are distorted. The second wave propagation method explored is acoustic waves in the enclosed fluid. The …

Determination Of Wetland Impact Due To Groundwater Drawdown: The Application Of Aerial Photo-Interpretation, Gis Analysis, And Groundwater Modeling, Tobin Hindle Jan 1997

Determination Of Wetland Impact Due To Groundwater Drawdown: The Application Of Aerial Photo-Interpretation, Gis Analysis, And Groundwater Modeling, Tobin Hindle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Aerial photo-interpretation, GIS analysis, and groundwater modeling were employed to determine the impact of permitted groundwater withdrawal, primarily for agricultural irrigation, on protected wetland communities within Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP), Martin County Florida. Since 1952, much of the wetland habitat has succeeded to terrestrial pine flatwoods in the southwestern section of the wilderness preserve of JDSP. The drying trend can not be linked to natural hydrologic impact, but strongly correlates to groundwater drawdown calculated using a three-dimensional groundwater computer model.

Crack Propagation In Concrete Structural Members Strengthened With Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic (Frp) Laminates, Gonzague. Gervois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis presents an experimental and analytical investigation of concrete structural members strengthened with externally bonded composite laminates with varying configurations. Parameters, such as size, type of laminate, debond, etc., are evaluated from the viewpoint of stress patterns and their influence on interfacial debonds. Stress patterns in the structure and stress intensity factors around crack tips are determined using a finite element model developed for this purpose. The study also includes a precise description of cracking and the failure function of each parameter investigated. Besides the development of an innovative finite element program, which enables the study of interfacial cracks …

Distributed Management Of Heterogeneous Networks Using Hypermedia Data Repositories, James M. Anderson Jan 1997

Distributed Management Of Heterogeneous Networks Using Hypermedia Data Repositories, James M. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Current management architectures address portions of the problem of managing high speed distributed networks; however, they do not provide a scalable end-to-end solution that can be applied to both large LAN and WAN high speed distributed networks. A new management architecture, "Web Integrated Network for Distributed Management Including Logic" (WINDMIL), is proposed to address the challenges of managing complex heterogeneous networks. The three primary components of the system are the Network Management Server (NMS), the Network Element Web Server (NEWS), and the Operator's Logic and Processing Platform (OLAPP). The NMS stores the management functions used by both the NEWS and …

Diversity Performance Of Ds-Cdma Systems In Multipath Fading Channels, George P. Efthymoglou Jan 1997

Diversity Performance Of Ds-Cdma Systems In Multipath Fading Channels, George P. Efthymoglou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In this dissertation, new semi-analytical expressions for the diversity bit error rate performance of asynchronous direct sequence-code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath fading channels are derived. Also, the PN acquisition time of a DS system with offset frequency periods greater than the code period in a AWGN channel is measured via laboratory experiments. In Part I we consider DS-CDMA systems operating in a cellular environment with multipath reception. Multipath propagation is exploited through the use of RAKE receivers. Coherent, differentially coherent and noncoherent binary demodulation schemes are considered. The multiple access interference is modeled as AWGN, conditioned on …

Domestic Sybil: Feminist Concerns In P. L. Travers's "Mary Poppins" And "Mary Poppins Comes Back", Donna M. Revtai Jan 1997

Domestic Sybil: Feminist Concerns In P. L. Travers's "Mary Poppins" And "Mary Poppins Comes Back", Donna M. Revtai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Certain elements in P. L. Travers's Mary Poppins (1934) and Mary Poppins Comes Back (1935) depict concerns that feminist critics deem important, such as mother figures, females as artists, women who exert power or lack it, female self-concepts, matrilineal connections and mother/child relationships. Travers sometimes treats these subjects ambiguously or ambivalently, but her attention to them indicates a riveting interest at the time. Her creative process whereby she projected childhood fantasies onto her ideal nanny, Mary Poppins, with whom she identified herself and others, relates to a feminine psychology. Travers's cyclic and web-like plots may link her to feminist aesthetics …

Docking The Ocean Explorer Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Using A Low-Cost Acoustic Positioning System And A Fuzzy Logic Guidance Algorithm, David Mitchell Kronen Jan 1997

Docking The Ocean Explorer Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Using A Low-Cost Acoustic Positioning System And A Fuzzy Logic Guidance Algorithm, David Mitchell Kronen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Having the ability to dock an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) can significantly enhance the operation of such vehicles. In order to dock an AUV, the vehicle's position must be known precisely and a guidance algorithm must be used to drive the AUV to its dock. This thesis will examine and implement a low cost acoustic positioning system to meet the positioning requirements. At-sea tests will be used as a method of verifying the systems specifications and proper incorporation into the AUV. Analyses will be run on the results using several methods of interpreting the data. The second portion of this …

Duration And The Prices Of Common Stocks, Yehuda A. Konnan Jan 1997

Duration And The Prices Of Common Stocks, Yehuda A. Konnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In finance, the term 'duration' means the effective length of a financial obligation which is discharged in installments. This concept has a number of applications in finance like calculating the change in the price of bonds due to the change in interest rates, immunizing the value of bonds, etc. Common stocks are also financial obligations and are considered to have durations. For bonds and similar strong contractual obligations, duration and its applications are clear cut and are used widely. For common stocks duration evaluation is difficult and its practical applications hardly exist. Moreover, there are no publications of numerical results …

Echoes Of Wordsworth And Coleridge Resound In "The Accidental Tourist", Susan Clare Finger Jan 1997

Echoes Of Wordsworth And Coleridge Resound In "The Accidental Tourist", Susan Clare Finger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Anne Tyler, who lived a "Romantic" childhood in mountain-terrained communes of North Carolina, borrowed ideas from Wordsworth and Coleridge for her 1985 novel The Accidental Tourist. Reflections of these Romantic poets are seen primarily in images but are also seen in Tyler's simple writing style. Macon Leary, the protagonist of the novel, is a wandering writer who loves the English language, but struggles to communicate his feelings verbally, a reflection of Romantic ideology. Other motifs include home as a place abandoned as well as a refuge for the mind and body; the destructive and renewing powers of the city; physical …

Driveability Of Concrete Piles Pretensioned With Cfrp And Confinement Effects Of Cfrp Hoops In Reinforced Concrete Columns, Rama Kumar Potturu Jan 1997

Driveability Of Concrete Piles Pretensioned With Cfrp And Confinement Effects Of Cfrp Hoops In Reinforced Concrete Columns, Rama Kumar Potturu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics has recently has been recognized as an alternative to conventional steel reinforcement in concrete due to its excellent resistance to corrosion. Four rectangular concrete beams and four concrete columns reinforced with CFRP bars were cast for the study of the long term behavior under uniform sustained loading. The beams were simply supported and subjected to uniform sustained loading. The columns were arranged in a steel reaction framework. The beams and columns were instrumented and monitored to observe the change in the behavior due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete. An analytical method is developed to …

Differential Power, Moral Hazard, And Preferred Monitoring Mode In Marketing Channels, Prakasam R. Devasagayam Jan 1997

Differential Power, Moral Hazard, And Preferred Monitoring Mode In Marketing Channels, Prakasam R. Devasagayam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This research examines the impact of differential power on the choice of monitoring mode in interorganizational relationships in marketing channels. Interorganizational relationships in channels of distribution can be considered agency relationships because they involve delegation of value-adding tasks by one participant (principal) to another participant (agent). Moral Hazard or the likelihood of an agent pursuing individual goals at the expense of mutually satisfying common goals may result in suboptimal outcomes and necessitates monitoring by the principal. Monitoring involves procuring information on the effort expended by the agent (behavior-based monitoring) and the resultant outcomes of such efforts (outcome-based monitoring). A comparison …

Diversity Techniques In Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access Communication Systems, Okechukwu Clark Ugweje Jan 1997

Diversity Techniques In Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access Communication Systems, Okechukwu Clark Ugweje

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation investigates the performance of different space diversity combining techniques for the wireless mobile communication systems employing Direct Sequence-Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA). It covers two research topics, all falling under the umbrella of diversity combining techniques. The first part deals with diversity reception of wideband DS-CDMA signals in which the diversity branches experience some correlation. This analysis is performed without the usual assumption that diversity branches are independent and hence uncorrelated. In this case, the analysis is limited to the conventional diversity techniques such as maximal ratio combining, equal gain combining and selection diversity. In particular, the effect …

Effect Of Fiber Sterilization Atmosphere On Insertion Of Lithium Into Pan-Based Carbon Filter Electrodes, James Christian Braun Jan 1997

Effect Of Fiber Sterilization Atmosphere On Insertion Of Lithium Into Pan-Based Carbon Filter Electrodes, James Christian Braun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A novel electrode structure for Li-ion batteries was created by thermally treating nonwoven polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fabric in an inert atmosphere. Rapid carbonization of PAN fiber, stabilized in an inert atmosphere, produced a fused carbon fiber structure having a reversible specific capacity for lithium above 300 mAh/g; with charge reversibility between 95 and 100%. Chemical, structural and electrochemical analyses, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed on carbon fiber electrodes. Scanning electron microscopy revealed grooves and striations on the surfaces of carbon fibers prepared from PAN precursors stabilized in oxygen; but could not resolve any surface features on the fused carbon fibers, …
