Implementation Of A Frequency-Agile, High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Souvalian

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Work at the University of New Mexico (UNM) has demonstrated how finite length effects in a high power vacuum backward wave oscillator (BWO) can be exploited to achieve frequency agility for constant beam and magnetic field parameters. This enhanced bandwidth is obtained through the axial displacement of the slow wave structure with respect to the cutoff neck "inlet" to the electrodynamic system. This paper describes progress on the implementation of this automatic displacement to facilitate the incorporation of a robust controller, as proposed by Abdallah, et al. (1996). The purpose of this controller is to demonstrate a "smart tube" where …

Low-Degree Graph Partitioning Via Local Search With Applications To Constraint Satisfaction, Max Cut, And Coloring, Magnus M. Halldorsson, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 1997

Low-Degree Graph Partitioning Via Local Search With Applications To Constraint Satisfaction, Max Cut, And Coloring, Magnus M. Halldorsson, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present practical algorithms for constructing partitions of graphs into a fixed number of vertex-disjoint subgraphs that satisfy particular degree constraints. We use this in particular to find k-cuts of graphs of maximum degree ∆ that cut at least a k - 1/k (1 + 1/2∆+k-1 ) fraction of the edges, improving previous bounds known. The partitions also apply to constraint networks, for which we give a tight analysis of natural local search heuristics for the maximum constraint satisfaction problem. These partitions also imply efficient approximations for several problems on weighted bounded-degree graphs. In particular, we improve the best performance …

The Topology Dependence Of Charged Particle Multiplicities In Three-Jet Events, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1997

The Topology Dependence Of Charged Particle Multiplicities In Three-Jet Events, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A study of individual jet and whole-event charged particle multiplicities in three-jet events measured in e + e − annihilation at the Z reveals a significant topology dependence. Mean jet multiplicities are inadequately described by jet energies; interjet angles must also be specified. Quantitative tests suggest that it is necessary to use transversemomentum- like scales to describe the data.

A Study Of Τ Decays Involving Η And Ω Mesons, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas Jan 1997

A Study Of Τ Decays Involving Η And Ω Mesons, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The 132 pbt - 1 of data collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994 have been used to analyze η and ω production in τ decays. The following branching fractions have been measured: B(τ−→ντωh−)=(1.91±0.07±0.06)×10−2,B(τ−→ντωh−)=(1.91±0.07±0.06)×10−2, B(τ−→ντωh−π0)=(4.3±0.6±0.5)×10−3,B(τ−→ντωh−π0)=(4.3±0.6±0.5)×10−3, B(τ−→ντηK−)=(2.9+1.3−1.2±0.7)×10−4,B(τ−→ντηK−)=(2.9−1.2+1.3±0.7)×10−4, B(τ−→ντηh−π0)=(1.8±0.4±0.2)×10−3B(τ−→ντηh−π0)=(1.8±0.4±0.2)×10−3 and the 95% C.L. limit B(τ− → ντηπt -) t - 4 has been obtained. The ωπt- and ηπt -π0 rates and dynamics are found in agreement with the predictions made from e+e∼ - annihilation data with the help of isospin invariance (CVC).

Production Of Orbitally Excited Charm Mesons In Semileptonic B Decays, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas Jan 1997

Production Of Orbitally Excited Charm Mesons In Semileptonic B Decays, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A sample of 3.6 million hadronic Z decays recorded between 1991 and 1995 with the ALEPH detector at LEP is used to investigate semileptonic decays of B mesons into final states involving orbitally excited charm mesons. Topological vertex criteria are used to search for decays involving narrow D** states as well as wide D** resonances and non-resonant D(*)π final states. The sum of the branching ratios for these processes is measured to be ${⤪ Br}({⩈erline {⤪ B}}⌝ghtarrow {⤪ D}≪ ⫑l^{-}{⩈erline v}) + {⤪ Br}({⩈erline {⤪ B}}⌝ghtarrow {⤪ D}^{⇒t}≪ ⫑l^{-}{⩈erline v})↦op =(2.26 pm 0.29({⤪ stat}) pm 0.33({⤪ syst}))%,$which accounts for a …

Immobilization Of Radioactive Materials In Iron Phosphate Glass, Melissa G. Mesko Jan 1997

Immobilization Of Radioactive Materials In Iron Phosphate Glass, Melissa G. Mesko

Doctoral Dissertations

"The current study investigates the feasibility of using iron phosphate glass for the immobilization of radioactive wastes considered incompatible with borosilicate glass. Wastes may be incompatible with borosilicate glass due to high phosphorus content (Hanford tank sludges), the presence of halides (CsCl and SrF2 capsules), or large amounts of uranium (SNF).

Between 20 and 60 wt% Hanford tank sludge was vitrified with an iron phosphate glass at ≤ 1200°C in 1 hour. The chemical durability of iron phosphate glassy wasteforms was as good as, or better than a reference borosilicate glass (10-9 g/cm2/min) in distilled water …

Service Quality Using The Deviation-Score Approach To Fit In Contingency Theory In A U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Setting, Donald Robert Groh Jan 1997

Service Quality Using The Deviation-Score Approach To Fit In Contingency Theory In A U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Setting, Donald Robert Groh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this study is to learn how organizational work unit context, structure, and processes relate to service quality. The theoretical basis for the research is that organizational work units should be structured based on the work that they perform. If the work that a unit performs is highly variable, then the work unit should be structured in such a way as to provide flexibility, that is, few rules and procedures and highly decentralized decision making. If the work that a unit performs is not variable, then the work unit should be structured to provide a non-varying product or …

An Investigation On The Effect Of Aging And Fatigue Damage On The Mechanical Properties Of A Graphite/Bismaleimide Composite, William M. Johnston Jr. Jan 1997

An Investigation On The Effect Of Aging And Fatigue Damage On The Mechanical Properties Of A Graphite/Bismaleimide Composite, William M. Johnston Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This investigation utilizes the open hole tension (OHT) specimen loaded in tension-tension fatigue under isothermal, fixed frequency conditions. A range of load levels and temperature levels where chosen to assess performance. These loads and temperatures ranged from relatively benign conditions (low stress, room temperature) up through aggressive conditions (high stress, high temperature). Measurements of stiffness, damage accumulation, residual strength, weight loss, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were made. Results from this work will help explain the roles of aging, load and fatigue in the performance of elevated temperature OHT specimens as well as provide insights to the individual and synergistic …

Social Support, Prior Interracial Experiences, And Network Orientation: Factors Related To Later Adjustment Among Black Freshmen At A Predominantly White University, Calvin Graham Jan 1997

Social Support, Prior Interracial Experiences, And Network Orientation: Factors Related To Later Adjustment Among Black Freshmen At A Predominantly White University, Calvin Graham

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

African-American students (mostly Freshmen) enrolled for the first year at a four-year university completed information about the racial composition of their high school, family income, living arrangements, and stressor prior to entering school. At two times during the first semester they completed measures of social support, network orientation and adaptation to college. Information about Grade Point Average (GPA) for the following term and attendance at the University one year later were also obtained. Racial composition of high school had some affect on social support at the university: Students from integrated and mainly Black high schools reported more social support satisfaction …

The Effects Of Race And Socioeconomic Status On The Acceptance Of Biracial Individuals, Erika Lela Gilyot Jan 1997

The Effects Of Race And Socioeconomic Status On The Acceptance Of Biracial Individuals, Erika Lela Gilyot

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects of race and socioeconomic status on the acceptance of biracial individuals having one Black and one White parent. A sample of 153 Black and 114 White college students were divided into high- and low-socioeconomic status based on demographic information. Acceptance of biracial individuals was measured by 2 modified versions of the Social Distance Scale (SDS1 and SDS2) developed by Bogardus (1928), a shortened version of the Scale To Measure Attitudes Toward Defined Groups (AS) developed by Grice (1934), and a measure of Perceived Commonality (PC) developed by Feather (1980). The Marlowe-Crowne (1960) Social Desirability …

Differential Endometrial Responses Of Primates Vs Rodents: Screening For Antiproliferative Effects Of Antiprogestins, David Williams Burleigh Jan 1997

Differential Endometrial Responses Of Primates Vs Rodents: Screening For Antiproliferative Effects Of Antiprogestins, David Williams Burleigh

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The antiprogestin, mifepristone, has previously been shown to noncompetitively inhibit estrogen-induced endometrial proliferation in nonhuman primates (van Uem et al., 1989; Wolf et al., 1989b; Neulen et al., 1990; Neulen et al., 1996). For both economical and ethical reasons, we are encouraged to identify comparative laboratory rodent models which can substitute the need to use primate models. In the following study, we compared capabilities of the rat uterine weight bioassay versus a primate uterine bioassay, to identify the noncompetitive antiestrogenic/antiproliferative effects of mifepristone.

Long-term ovariectomized monkeys were exposed to exogenous 17β-estradiol (E2) and mifepristone in doses and regimes already demonstrated …

Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner Jan 1997

Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner

Theses

This thesis is about architecture's current disregard for the lived body and about the lived bodily experiences of women in Western society. Although these seem to be two different themes, they are connected. Architecture disregards the lived body, but it can never escape it. Architects design buildings from their own lived experiences of the world and architectural theorists most often write about architecture from their experience of being in the buildings they discuss. But because architecture has been built and discussed predominantly by men, Western theories of architecture reflect mainly a male interpretation. I begin by analyzing the paradigms of …

Academic Mestizaje: Re/Producing Clinical Teaching And Re/Framing Wills As Latina Praxis, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 1997

Academic Mestizaje: Re/Producing Clinical Teaching And Re/Framing Wills As Latina Praxis, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

What follows is an analysis that draws connections between activist teaching and activist scholarship and posits that it is the activism, the focus on the needs of Latinas/as, that makes them community service. In Part I, I describe the community lawyering program, one of the clinical law options, available at the University of New Mexico School of Law. In Part Il, I undertake to re-frame the law of wills in order to make this end-of-life ritual more relevant to the lives of Latinas/os. I then I enact a LatCritique of academic discussions and Outsider discourses. I conclude by examining our …

Restoring The Humanitarian Character Of U.S. Refugee Law: Lessons From The International Community, Jennifer Moore Jan 1997

Restoring The Humanitarian Character Of U.S. Refugee Law: Lessons From The International Community, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Scholarship

This response essay will first characterize UNHCR's role in the international protection of refugees, as a means of assessing the relevance of UNHCR's perspective to U.S. judicial decision-making in the area of asylum. The paper will then respond to each of the three problematic issues which Professor Fitzpatrick identifies in contemporary U.S. asylum law, by presenting, in each case, a broad proposition of international law which will then be substantiated with reference to relevant principles, guidelines and insights from the international refugee protection community of which UNHCR is a part. Finally, the essay's conclusion will offer a possible rationale for …
