Collection Development Reports and Documents
A summary of a review that determined the approximate cost to acquire a selection of core journals in support of undergraduate programs at the University of Rhode Island. The list was compiled by reviewing the appropriate standard indexes which college libraries use to gain access to the periodical literature. This review does not survey the journals required for our graduate programs [Oceanography, CPAD, GSLIS, Audiology, etc], newspapers, reference / electronic serials, etc.
Identifying Permanent And Temporary Components In Daily And Monthly Japanese Stock Prices, Ray Bonnie, Shaw Chen, Jeffrey E. Jarrett
Identifying Permanent And Temporary Components In Daily And Monthly Japanese Stock Prices, Ray Bonnie, Shaw Chen, Jeffrey E. Jarrett
College of Business Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to analyze time series of daily and monthly values for the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) and stock price values for 15 companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Section 1 (TSE-I), to determine the contribution of permanent and temporary components to Japanese stock prices. The existence of temporary components in the price series would imply that Japanese stock returns arc partially predictable. The method of canonical correlation is used to determine components common to each series and the persistence of each component series is evaluated by estimating the amount of dependence in the …
The Wilsonian Dilemma, Mark Hall
The Wilsonian Dilemma, Mark Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
This essay explores James Wilson’s approach to the so-called “Madisonian Dilemma. ” I first explain how the tension between majority rule and minority rights was more extreme for Wilson than for most founders. I then show how his view of human nature and moral epistemology allowed him to resolve the dilemma. Although Wilson’s solution may be less realistic than Madison’s, it is still worthy of serious consideration because of its influence on the creation of America’s constitutional system.
Challenging Political Culture In Postwar Austria: Veterans' Associations, Identity, And The Problem Of Contemporary History, Matthew P. Berg
Challenging Political Culture In Postwar Austria: Veterans' Associations, Identity, And The Problem Of Contemporary History, Matthew P. Berg
History
This observation, registered by Marianne Enigl and Herbert Lackner, points to an incontestable and compelling feature of contemporary Austrian political culture: during the 1980s and 1990s, the first meaningful steps toward an Austrian Vergangenheitsbewältigung developed out of a discussion of Austrians' military service during the Nazi era and its highly problematic association with wartime atrocities and genocide. Exploration of this important theme had been avoided throughout the period of the Second Republic by a carefully cultivated expression of public memory. The inherent tension between the internationally sanctioned notion of Austrian victimization during the Nazi years and the pride of many …

Md Ribbing Instability Of Air Knife Coating Application, Bradley W. Fadden
Md Ribbing Instability Of Air Knife Coating Application, Bradley W. Fadden
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The coating application process is an area of great concern for most mills that produce a coated media. During the roll application of the coating onto the sheet, the fluid that is passed to the sheet from the roll, goes through a process known as film splitting. Film splitting is the mechanism for the transfer of the fluid from the application roll to the sheet. Instead of smoothly transferring onto the sheet, the film splits away from the roll and then onto the substrate. Without even transfer and leveling of the coating fluid, the splitting results in stripes or ribs …

The Information Superhighway: Trolls At The Tollgate, Charles M. Oliver
The Information Superhighway: Trolls At The Tollgate, Charles M. Oliver
Federal Communications Law Journal
Prior to the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, policymakers sought funding and regulatory mechanisms capable of fulfilling the vision of an Information Superhighway. Vice President Gore, the Clinton Administration's point person on the issue, initially proposed assessing fees on other sectors of the telecommunications industry to fund construction. Meanwhile, conservatives asserted that deregulation of the industry would achieve the desired result. A compromise ultimately was reached: the 1996 Act requires local exchange carriers to unbundle their networks and provide access at a reasonable cost to competitors. The use of regulatory formulas in lieu of taxes to subsidize a national …
Property Rights, Reliance, And Retroactivity Under The Communications Act Of 1934, William L. Fishman
Property Rights, Reliance, And Retroactivity Under The Communications Act Of 1934, William L. Fishman
Federal Communications Law Journal
Although the FCC and courts have concluded that licensees have certain property interests in their licenses, they do not acquire any ownership interests even when, via a spectrum auction, they pay for their licenses. What narrow property interests licensees maintain are limited, and the FCC has broad power to modify existing licenses if doing so is in the public interest. License owners have sought to limit or defeat otherwise lawful FCC actions to alter their licenses by asserting a reliance interest on prior agency action or policy. Licensees may find comfort in the fact that some courts have acknowledged these …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xvi. The Double-Lined Binary 42 Capricorni, Francis C. Fekel
Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications
New spectroscopic observations of the chromospherically active binary, 42 Capricorni, have resulted in the detection of lines of the secondary, improved orbital elements, and the determination of fundamental properties of the components. 42 Cap has an orbital period of 13.174004 d, an eccentricity of 0.176, and a mass ratio A/B of 1.375. No evidence for a variation of the center-of-mass velocity, suggested by earlier investigators, has been found. Spectral types of the primary and secondary are G1 IV and G2 V, respectively. The V mag difference of 1.94 and HIPPARCOS parallax result in MV = 2.79 mag for A and …

Honest Or Deceitful?: A Study Of Persons' Mental Models For Judging Veracity, John S. Seiter
Honest Or Deceitful?: A Study Of Persons' Mental Models For Judging Veracity, John S. Seiter
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study focused on understanding the detailed and dynamic mental models that people develop for judging veracity. It was hypothesized that individual differences in such mental models, assessed by using Thagard's (1989) ECHO computer simulation program, would predict participants' attributions and confidence in making attributions. After watching videotapes of targets, 120 participants rated targets' veracity and their own confidence in making attributions. Half of these participants also provided “on-line” information that, in turn, was entered into ECHO. The two groups did not differ in their judgments of veracity, but the on-line group was significantly more confident. Results from ECHO and …

Neighborhood Effects On Afdc Exits: Examining The Social Isolation, Relative Deprivation, And Epidemic Theories, Thomas P. Vartanian
Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
Linking data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics with the 1970 and 1980 censuses, the author finds that, in accordance with the social isolation theory, neighborhood conditions greatly affect the likelihood of exiting the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. Neighborhood conditions are especially strong predictors of leaving the program for African Americans, high school dropouts, and for those who marry. Members of each of these groups stay on welfare significantly longer when they live in the most economically depressed neighborhoods of neighborhoods with a relatively high proportion of manufacturing relative to professional and executive workers. I …

Lovastatin And Phenylacetate Inhibit The Induction Of Nitric Oxide Synthase And Cytokines In Rat Primary Astrocytes, Microglia, And Macrophages, Kalipada Pahan, Faruk G. Sheikh, Aryan M. S. Namboodiri, Inderjit Singh
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
This study explores the role of mevalonate inhibitors in the activation of NF-kβ and the induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in rat primary astrocytes, microglia, and macrophages. Lovastatin and sodium phenylacetate (NaPA) were found to inhibit LPS- and cytokine-mediated production of NO and expression of iNOS in rat primary astrocytes; this inhibition was not due to depletion of end products of mevalonate pathway (e.g., cholesterol and ubiquinone). Reversal of the inhibitory effect of lovastatin on LPS-induced iNOS expression by mevalonate and farnesyl pyrophosphate and reversal of the inhibitory effect of NaPA on …

Cationic Polymeric Microparticle Retention Systems And Fines Retention, Derek Maddox
Cationic Polymeric Microparticle Retention Systems And Fines Retention, Derek Maddox
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A new cationic polymeric microparticle (CPMP), which is not yet commercialized, has been developed as a retention and flocculation aid. To study the effectiveness of this new cationic polymeric microparticle as a retention aid it was used in conjunction with both a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and an anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). Laboratory evaluation involved using a Britt Dynamic Drainage Jar, two different furnishes and multiple retention system addition levels to test for fines retention. The two systems were then evaluated individually and compared.
It was found that both the CPMP-APAM and CPMP-CPAM systems were beneficial in retaining both fiber and filler …
