Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell Jan 1997

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Much of the scholarly debate about hate crime laws focuses on a discussion of their constitutionality under the First Amendment. Part of larger empirical study of police methods of investigating hate crimes, this Note attempts to shift thinking in this area beyond the existing debate over the constitutionality of hate crime legislation to a discussion of how low-level criminal justice personnel, such as the police, enforce hate crime laws. This Note argues that, since hate crimes are an area in which police have great discretion in enforcing the law, their understanding of the First Amendment and how it relates to …

amount of computational power to researchers at an affordable cost, making it feasible to use workstations rather than expensive supercomputers to perform scientific analysis of large data sets, such as the Global Land 1-Km AVHRR data. In addition to this, inexpensive high speed ATM networks have the potential to improve the overall computational efficiency of workstations by using several workstations in a distributed environment. This research studies the practicality of using distributed workstations interconnected with a 155 Mb ATM network for analysis and compression of the Global Land 1-Km AVHRR data versus sequential computing on one of the workstations. Performance …

Conceptual And Empirical Bases Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article describes “conjoint behavioral consultation,” a model of service delivery that addresses the shared responsibility among school personnel, families, and other important systems in educational problem solving. The conceptual background (incorporating ecological- systems and behavioral theories) and important features of the model are reviewed briefly. Findings from a number of empirical studies, including outcome studies, case studies, process research, and acceptability research, are reviewed. Directions for future research are also explored.

International Commercial Transactions: 1996, Peter Winship Jan 1997

International Commercial Transactions: 1996, Peter Winship

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The year 1996 was a quiet one in the world of international commercial law. The principal accomplishment was the adoption of a Model Law on Electronic Commerce, but progress was also made on several international secured transactions projects. The following survey focuses on these and other projects that touch on subject matter within the scope of the Uniform Commercial Code.' As in the past,2 the survey examines completed projects, pending projects, and proposed projects before the U.N. Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), and the Organization of American States (OAS).3 …

An Integrated Approach To Simulation And Activity-Based Costing For Evaluating Alternative Manufacturing Cell Designs, Robert Williams, Paul Savory, Rodney Rasmussen Jan 1997

An Integrated Approach To Simulation And Activity-Based Costing For Evaluating Alternative Manufacturing Cell Designs, Robert Williams, Paul Savory, Rodney Rasmussen

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

One effective technique for improving manufacturing efficiency involves the application of group technology part families and manufacturing cells. Selection of the best or optimum configuration of the manufacturing cell relies on the experience and judgment of the cell designer. This paper describes how activity-based costing (ABC) concepts can be integrated into a discrete-event simulation model and be used to evaluate manufacturing cell configurations. The output of the combined ABC simulation model provides a detailed “Bill of Activity” which allows the cell designer to consider costs as a critical factor in the cell design problem. Alternative cell configurations studied in this …

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher Jan 1997

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to identify curriculum design strategies that would assist elementary physical education teachers in producing thematic units for elementary physical education classes. Strategies for integrating curriculum were identified in the literature then used to create and implement a thematic physical education project. Specific strategies were explained in detail through examples associated with the project. The strategies demonstrate that thematic instruction can successfully meet the needs of many children, invite new learning, and will assist teachers in coordinating themes with elementary physical education classes. A school-wide Olympic Fest was the culminating event of this project. There …

Curriculum Lags Technology, Judy Suddendorf Jan 1997

Curriculum Lags Technology, Judy Suddendorf

Graduate Research Papers

As we approach the 21st century, no one disputes computers/computer-based technology is here to stay. With the evolution of more affordable technology, business and education have increased investment in computers. Corporate environments have completely altered their daily work environment as a result. The implications produce an overwhelming challenge to our school system. The critical question, then, is how do we best prepare our children for such a technologically advanced environment? There are many theories and ideas on how this task should be accomplished.

Prediction Of Firing Pin Shape And 3d Matching Of Shells And Firing Pins Based On Firing Pin Impressions In Primers, Donald W. Dawson, Chris Hart, Bernard S. Gilbert Iii, Rafael A. Andrade, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1997

Prediction Of Firing Pin Shape And 3d Matching Of Shells And Firing Pins Based On Firing Pin Impressions In Primers, Donald W. Dawson, Chris Hart, Bernard S. Gilbert Iii, Rafael A. Andrade, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A variable resolution video machine vision system has been built which will determine the 3-D shape of a firing pin from the dent it has made in the primer of a shell. The system can also compare primer dents in different shells and determine if a 3-D match exists. A real time optical 3-D shape recognition feature allows the operator to align the shells, determine if there is a match, and quantify the quality of the 3-D match. The system uses a laser interferometer to project variable spatial frequency structural illumination on the shells which are viewed by video cameras. …

Real Time 3-D Video Moire Inspection System With Enhanced Depth Resolution, Donald W.W. Dawson, Chris L. Hart, Bernard R. Gilbert, Gary L. Wallace, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1997

Real Time 3-D Video Moire Inspection System With Enhanced Depth Resolution, Donald W.W. Dawson, Chris L. Hart, Bernard R. Gilbert, Gary L. Wallace, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A variable resolution video machine vision systems has been built which generates twice the number of depth contours for a given grating spacing as a conventional moiré system. This variable resolution system uses a Mach-Zender interferometer to project interference fringes onto a reference surface and onto a target surface. Video images of the two structurally illuminated surfaces are mixed in a video mixer with the resulting output being moiré contours which are the intersections of the two surfaces. If the reference surface is a flat plate, we get equal depth contours of the target surface, and if the reference surface …

Lactose Intolerance In Persistent Diarrhoea During Childhood: The Role Of A Traditional Rice-Lentil (Khitchri) And Yogurt Diet In Nutritional Management, Z A. Bhutta, S Q. Nizami, Z Isani Jan 1997

Lactose Intolerance In Persistent Diarrhoea During Childhood: The Role Of A Traditional Rice-Lentil (Khitchri) And Yogurt Diet In Nutritional Management, Z A. Bhutta, S Q. Nizami, Z Isani

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Lactose intolerance is frequently encountered in children with persistent diarrhoea (PD). Selection of an appropriate milk-based formulation is a major management problem in the developing world. In a consecutive series of studies, we evaluated the role of feeding a traditional rice-lentil (khitchri) diet alone (KY) or in combination with either soy formula (KY-Soy) a dilute buffalo milk (KY-B), in children (age 6 months-3 years) with PD. Serial observations of stool output, caloric intake and weight gain of these children over a 14 day period indicated satisfactory tolerance of the KY diet with adequate weight gain. The weight gain and stool …

Feeding Mechanism And Functional Morphology Of The Jaws Of The Lemon Shark Negaprion Brevirostris (Chondrichthyes, Carcharhinidae), Philip J. Motta, Timothy C. Tricas, Robert E. Hueter, Adam P. Summers Jan 1997

Feeding Mechanism And Functional Morphology Of The Jaws Of The Lemon Shark Negaprion Brevirostris (Chondrichthyes, Carcharhinidae), Philip J. Motta, Timothy C. Tricas, Robert E. Hueter, Adam P. Summers

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This study tests the hypothesis that preparatory, expansive, compressive and recovery phases of biting behavior known for aquatically feeding anamniotes are conserved among extant elasmobranch fishes. The feeding mechanism of the lemon shark Negaprion brevirostris is examined by anatomical dissection, electromyography and high-speed video analysis. Three types of feeding events are differentiated during feeding: (1) food ingestion primarily by ram feeding; (2) food manipulation; and (3) hydraulic transport of the food by suction. All feeding events are composed of the expansive, compressive and recovery phases common to aquatically feeding teleost fishes, salamanders and turtles. A preparatory phase is occasionally observed …

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1997

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

I will consider Kant's claim that the categorical imperative (CI) is a synthetic a priori proposition. We know from the first Critique that such propositions are likely to be very important, but also difficult to justify. Kant says exactly the same things about the CI in the Grundlegung: the CI is difficult to justify2, but if we do not succeed in justifying it, morality may be a mere "phantom of the brain.',3 Though little has been written on this topic, a correct understanding of this claim is important to understanding Kant's views.

Supererogation And Overdetermination In Kant's Ethics: Analysis And Interpretation At Their Best In Baron, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1997

Supererogation And Overdetermination In Kant's Ethics: Analysis And Interpretation At Their Best In Baron, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Marcia Baron's book tackles two very difficult issues, both centered on criticisms of the Kantian conception of duty. The solutions to her chosen questions lie rather deeply hidden, and the procedures by which Baron digs deep to find solutions are exemplary in their presentation of careful interpretation of texts by Kant, of writers on Kant, and of conceptual analysis and criticism. This book is not like a commentary, which would consider a broader range of questions and issues; it is rather a narrower, closer analysis of a few more specific issues. These few narrow issues have broad ramifications for our …

Comments On Hill: “Punishment, Conscience, And Moral Worth”, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1997

Comments On Hill: “Punishment, Conscience, And Moral Worth”, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This is an interesting paper to me, among other reasons, because it deals with both halves of Kant’s Metaphysics of Morals; that fact alone also makes it somewhat unusual. It proposes in particular that there is a kind of analogy between conscience as an inner voice of morality and punishment as a provider of incentives against antisocial actions through punishment as deterrence.

As Hill points out, there has been quite a lot of discussion of Kant’s views on punishment, but not much about his views of conscience. Nevertheless, there remain scholarly puzzles about Kant’s views on punishment, and there …

Convolution And Fourier-Feynman Transforms, Chull Park, David Skough Jan 1997

Convolution And Fourier-Feynman Transforms, Chull Park, David Skough

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, for a class of funtionals on Wiener space of the form F(x) = exp{∫T0 f(t, x(t)) dt}, we show that the Fourier-Feynman transform of the convolution product is a product of Fourier-Feynman transforms. This allows us to compute the transform of the convolution product without computing the convolution product.
