Radiation Imaging Operators Applied To The Detection Of Velocity And Density Contrast Boundaries, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak Nov 1997

Radiation Imaging Operators Applied To The Detection Of Velocity And Density Contrast Boundaries, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A procedure for imaging interfaces formed by simultaneous density and velocity contrasts in acoustic media is described. The procedure is based on the properties of radiation imaging operators - a class of linear differential operators parametrically dependent on the acoustic properties of the media. An example of this procedure is demonstrated through the use of numerical simulation. Results, in the form of interface images, are shown, assuming the bulk acoustic characteristics (velocity and density) on both sides of the interface are known.

An Experimental Procedure For Characterizing Interconnects To The Dc Power Bus On A Multilayer Printed Circuit Board, Hao Shi, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Fei Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effectiveness of dc power-bus decoupling is impacted by the inductance associated with interconnect vias in printed circuit boards (PCB's). Adequate characterization of these interconnects is necessary to facilitate modeling and simulation, and to assess the effectiveness of added decoupling. In this study, a measurement procedure is presented for determining the series inductance and resistance of an interconnect with a network analyzer. The validity and limitations of the procedure are discussed. Experimental results of interconnect parameters on an 8 × 10 in ten-layer test-board corroborate those measured with a precision impedance analyzer. The measured interconnect values are used to simulate …

Insect Resistant Rice, Maize And Wheat Cultivars In Sustainable Agriculture, E. A. Heinrichs, J. E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The achievement of self sufficiency in food production is a major objective of governments throughout the world. Insects are one of the major constraints that limit the production of food crops. To mitigate losses due to insects. insect resistant cultivars are sought as a major tactic in the development of integrated pest management strategies. The integration of insect resistant cultivars with other pest management tactics contributes to crop pest management strategies that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Multiple pest resistant crop cultivars have high yield stability when grown in pest-infested environments. Significant progress on a global basis has been achieved …

Competitive Issues In The Deregulated United States Railroad Industry, Johannes Christian Koeppe Nov 1997

Competitive Issues In The Deregulated United States Railroad Industry, Johannes Christian Koeppe

Student Work

In 1980, the railroad industry was deregulated due to poor industry performance as well as an ideological shift. The newly developed contestable market theory provided the political justification for deregulating what was previously perceived as a natural monopoly. The theme of this study is the examination of whether contestable market conditions exist in the U.S. surface transportation industry which are sufficient to justify giving up direct governmental involvement in the railroad industry. The main generic market structures that play an important role in the regulatory discussion are introduced and implications for regulatory intervention in the case of railroads are drawn. …

Sharpening The Focus On Daubert's Distinction Between Scientific And Nonscientific Expert Testimony, Edson Mcclellan Nov 1997

Sharpening The Focus On Daubert's Distinction Between Scientific And Nonscientific Expert Testimony, Edson Mcclellan

San Diego Law Review

Although the Supreme Court elaborated a standard for the admissibility of expert testimony in Daubert, that standard is often inadequate to judging nonscientific testimony. This article proposes a model for judges to apply to expert testimony: courts should discern the epistemological source of experts’ knowledge. If the knowledge underlying an expert’s opinion was derived from the scientific method, courts should apply a different reliability analysis than if the knowledge was derived from the more common experiences shaping daily life. Courts should not only consider the reliability of the underlying methodology upon which the opinions are formed, but also how that …

Tiered Entities And Sovereign Privileges Under The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, Kelly Shaul Nov 1997

Tiered Entities And Sovereign Privileges Under The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, Kelly Shaul

San Diego Law Review

The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) grants state status, and therefore sovereign immunity, to any “agency or instrumentality of a foreign state.” Under some circumstances, where foreign corporations can demonstrate control by a foreign state through state-controlled intermediary companies, these corporations can gain sovereign immunity or procedural benefits of the FSIA. This phenomenon is known as “tiered” ownership. State-owned enterprises are common, and tiered ownership of commercial enterprises by foreign states is widespread among companies doing business in the U.S. This article argues that the concept of “tiered ownership” is not supported by the language of the FSIA and that …

Toward Fairness In Compensation Of Management And Labor: Compensation Ratios, A Proposal For Disclosure, James A. Cotton

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article will discuss the general history of executive compensation and the concept of "excessive compensation" as it has developed in corporate America. The article advocates a change in current SEC disclosure requirements which are set out in Appendix A of this article. The development of ratios as a tool of financial analysis is discussed to establish the legitimacy of their use. The author then offers an example of a stockholder proposal to make use of compensation ratios.

A Straitjacket For Employment At-Will: Recognizing Breach Of Implied Contract Actions For Wrongful Demotion, Gregory M. Munson Nov 1997

A Straitjacket For Employment At-Will: Recognizing Breach Of Implied Contract Actions For Wrongful Demotion, Gregory M. Munson

Vanderbilt Law Review

For over a century, employment at-will has been the law in almost all American jurisdictions.' As a result, employers can fire their employees, and employees can quit, with or without reason. In addition, employers have the authority under the at-will rule to regulate all terms and conditions of employment. During the past two decades a series of judicial exceptions to the at-will rule that prohibit termination of an employee for a variety of reasons have eroded the at-will doctrine. These exceptions fall into two categories. First, an employer may not terminate an employee for reasons that violate public policy Second, …

No More Excuses: Refusing To Condone Mere Carelessness Or Negligence Under The "Excusable Neglect" Standard In Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 60(B)(1), Bree W. Weathersbee Nov 1997

No More Excuses: Refusing To Condone Mere Carelessness Or Negligence Under The "Excusable Neglect" Standard In Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 60(B)(1), Bree W. Weathersbee

Vanderbilt Law Review

Rule 60(b)' is an attempt to codify the equitable, common law practice of reforming judgments under special circumstances. The rule, inter alia, authorizes a court to relieve a party from a default judgment for "excusable neglect." This standard, however, is not defined in the rules, and courts have struggled with its meaning. Some circuits define the term liberally and often grant requests to vacate default judgments. Others adopt a strict interpretation and consistently refuse to vacate default judgments resulting from mere carelessness or negligence. Recently, in Pioneer Investment Services Co. v. Brunswick Associates Ltd. Partnership, the Supreme Court clarified the …

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

It is essential to standardize the definitions and approaches to quantifying various irrigation performance measures. The ASCE Task Committee on Defining Irrigation Efficiency and Uniformity provides a comprehensive examination of various performance indices such as irrigation efficiency, application efficiency, irrigation sagacity, distribution uniformity, and others. Consistency is provided among different irrigation methods and different scales. Clarification of common points of confusion is provided, and methods are proposed whereby the accuracy of numerical values of the performance indicators can be assessed. This issue has two companion papers that provide more detailed information on statistical distribution uniformity and the accuracy of irrigation …

Subthreshold Leakage Control By Multiple Channel Length Cmos (Mccmos), Mark Johnson, Kaushik Roy Nov 1997

Subthreshold Leakage Control By Multiple Channel Length Cmos (Mccmos), Mark Johnson, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In sub-micron CMOS design, non-minimum length transistors offer the possibility of achieving excellent leakage control without the disadvantages of other known leakage control techniques. Preliminary analyses indicate that one can expect leakage reduction by a factor of at least 100 (and possibly orders of magnitude higher) with only modest increases in circuit area and switched capacitance. This paper briefly reviews related leakage cor~trol techniques, describes the McCMOS technique, and presents :simulation results that are indicative of the performance of the technique.

Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Magneto-Optic Kerr Effects In Co/Pt Multilayers, Xiang Gao, Darin W. Glenn, Scott Heckens, Daniel W. Thompson, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Control of thickness and microstructure is critical in the preparation of ultrathin metallic multilayers for magneto-optic memory, computer read heads, and improved wear surfaces. This paper describes use of in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry to calibrate sputter deposition rates, control layer thicknesses, determine optical constants, and study oxidation rates and processes. In this work, the information gained in situ is used together with ex situ Kerr measurements to determine the complete magneto-optic response including the spectroscopic figure of merit for Co/Pt multilayers.

Stratospheric Loading Of Sulfur From Explosive Volcanic Eruptions, Gregg J. Bluth, William I. Rose, Ian E. Sprod, Arlin J. Krueger

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

This paper is an attempt to measure our understanding of volcano/atmosphere interactions by comparing a box model of potential volcanogenic aerosol production and removal in the stratosphere with the stratospheric aerosol optical depth over the period of 1979 to 1994. Model results and observed data are in good agreement both in magnitude and removal rates for the two largest eruptions, El Chicho´n and Pinatubo. However, the peak of stratospheric optical depth occurs about nine months after the eruptions, four times longer than the model prediction, which is driven by actual SO2 measurements. For smaller eruptions, the observed stratospheric perturbation is …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Software Product Metrics For Cobol Systems, Richard E. Boone Nov 1997

An Investigation Into The Use Of Software Product Metrics For Cobol Systems, Richard E. Boone

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated several hypotheses that specific product measures could be used to predict later software lifecycle process or product measures. It collected software product and process measures from four consecutive major releases of a large Cobol legacy system (400K LOC). The types of product measures used were size and specific complexity measures. A statistical software package was used to calculate sample correlation coefficients between the measures. A 95% confidence interval was computed for each sample correlation coefficient that showed a strong or moderate linear correlation. The maintenance process measures provided were manhours used for each program changed or added, …
