Effect Of Message Latency In An Atm Network On Signal Processing, Ralph Lawrence Weber Jan 1997

Effect Of Message Latency In An Atm Network On Signal Processing, Ralph Lawrence Weber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Signal processing requires a steady flow of sampled data to be able to properly manipulate the signal to get the desired output. By using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks, it is possible to divide signal processing amongst a number of stations where each station can be specialized to a single function. Unfortunately, most commercially available ATM Network Interface Cards (NIC) only support message mode ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) which is unsuitable to signal processing due to the delays of having to wait for an entire message to be formed prior to sending. It is shown that by using an …

Effect Of Compression Of Performance In A Demand Paging Operating System, Allen Chester Wynn Jan 1997

Effect Of Compression Of Performance In A Demand Paging Operating System, Allen Chester Wynn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In this thesis, we measure and analyze the effects of compression in a demand paging operating system. We first explore existing compression algorithms and page replacement policies currently in use. Then we examine the OS/2 operating system which is modified to include page-based compression. Software trace hooks are inserted into the operating system to determine the amount of time required to process a page fault for each type of page, e.g. non-compressed, compressed, zero-filled, and the number of page faults for each type of page. Software trace measurements as well as physical timings are taken on a system without compressed …

Effects Of Various Sand Types On Nest Temperature And Hatching Success In The Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Sea Turtle, Rebecca Joan Cheeks Jan 1997

Effects Of Various Sand Types On Nest Temperature And Hatching Success In The Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Sea Turtle, Rebecca Joan Cheeks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Because of the logistics involved with field experiments, most of what is known about effects of temperature on the nest environment of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles has been learned in the laboratory. Until now, scientists have been forced to speculate on what effects different sands might have on temperature within the nest. Results of the present study indicate that the upper lethal temperature limit of loggerheads is between 33-35C; this temperature is more likely to be reached in larger clutches, causing high mortality and low emergence success. Furthermore, the metabolic heat of a larger clutch will be exacerbated by …

Electrochemical Intercalation Of Lithium-Ion Into Carbon Fibers Prepared From Synthetic Cellulose Precursor, Robert Lewis Kashauer Jan 1997

Electrochemical Intercalation Of Lithium-Ion Into Carbon Fibers Prepared From Synthetic Cellulose Precursor, Robert Lewis Kashauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A number of fibrous carbon materials have been investigated as intercalation host materials. Commercially available rayon fiber (synthetic cellulose) based carbon fibers were synthesized for use as anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The effects of oxidation and carbonization temperature, heating ramp rate, soak time and gaseous atmosphere during thermal treatment on the electrochemical performance of the carbon fibers were studied. Intercalation/deintercalation experiments were performed to evaluate the electrochemical performance of the carbon fibers. The highest reversible capacity and lowest irreversible capacity loss were obtained for carbon fibers carbonized at 1100C at a ramp rate of 10C/min held at soak times …

Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors Utilizing Low Surface Area Graphite Fibers, David Isaiah Zawacki Jan 1997

Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors Utilizing Low Surface Area Graphite Fibers, David Isaiah Zawacki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Electrochemical double-layer capacitors were constructed using low surface area carbon fibers that are commercially available. The fibers were made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and pitch and vary from low (LC = 14A, d002 = 3.54A) to high (LC = 169A, d002 = 3.40A) crystallinity. High energy densities (up to 7.83 Wh/kg) were obtained by electrochemically intercalating HSO4- ions between the graphene planes of the carbon fibers. The intercalation process was strongly influenced by the crystallinity of the carbon fiber and by the precursors from which the fiber was manufactured. All the pitch fibers had a higher structural order and a higher …

Embrittlement Susceptibility Of Corroded Pre-Stressing Steel In Concrete During Cathodic Polarization, Arnaud. Poeydomenge Jan 1997

Embrittlement Susceptibility Of Corroded Pre-Stressing Steel In Concrete During Cathodic Polarization, Arnaud. Poeydomenge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Experiments and analyses were performed to better define the limits of concern regarding hydrogen embrittlement in association with application of cathodic protection to prestressed concrete. To accomplish this, prestressed concrete specimens were locally corroded to different levels by anodic polarization and then polarized to -1.30 V SCE. A procedure of examination was developed using strain gauges to determine the level of prestrain. Relatively few brittle failures of wires resulted due, at least in part, to a relatively low prestrain of the pretensioned tendons. A model was developed which, coupled with data from parallel research, permitted definition of the minimum cross …

Evaluation Of Fish Populations And Relative Abundance Within Pools A, B And C Of The Kissimmee River: Possible Responses To The Pool B Demonstration Project, Daniel E. Miller Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Fish Populations And Relative Abundance Within Pools A, B And C Of The Kissimmee River: Possible Responses To The Pool B Demonstration Project, Daniel E. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Channelization of the Kissimmee River from 1962 to 1971 altered the natural hydrology of the river/floodplain system. Results of construction of the C-38 canal included loss of continuous flow of water and loss of floodplain habitat which adversely impacted the fish community. In 1984 the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) constructed the Pool B demonstration project to evaluate the feasibility of a planned restoration project. To evaluate success of the demonstration project in enhancing the Pool B fish fauna, a hoop net sampling program was conducted in 1996. The data suggest that black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) and other sport …

Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Evaluations of shore erosion and protection in Florida are constrained by time and space. This study characterizes about 95% of Florida's beaches based on the degree of urban development, direction and rates of shoreline change, presence of sensitive ecological communities, and distribution of sea defense works. The 22 coastal-county maps prepared for this study show that approximately 195 km (16%) of Florida's beaches are eroding and 283 km (23%) are protected by engineering works. About 72% of eroded beaches are geographically associated with inlets. Sand management at inlets is crucial to improve erosion mitigation in Florida. Suggestions designed to enhance …

Evolution Of Numeric Constants In Genetic Programming, Thomas Fernandez Jan 1997

Evolution Of Numeric Constants In Genetic Programming, Thomas Fernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Genetic Programming is an evolutionary technique for searching through the space of S-expressions for programs that represent optimal or acceptable solutions to a given problem. Genetic Programming often has difficulty in finding the appropriate numeric constants to use in leaf nodes of the S-expressions. This thesis describes the use of local search algorithms to search for numeric constants that will improve the S-expressions found by Genetic Programming. Three methods, Multi-Dimensional Hill Climbing, Vector Hill Climbing, and Numeric Mutation are combined with Genetic Programming to create hybrid systems. The performance of these hybrid systems is analyzed and future directions for improving …

Estimation Of Information-Theoretics-Based Delay-Bounds In Atm Networks, Liqun. Wei Jan 1997

Estimation Of Information-Theoretics-Based Delay-Bounds In Atm Networks, Liqun. Wei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis addresses a method of deducing the statistical upper and lower bounds associated with the cell-transfer delay variations (CDVs) encountered by the cells transmitted in the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks due to cell losses. This study focuses on: (1) Estimating CDV arising from multiplexing/switching for both constant bit rate and variable bit rate services via simulations. (2) Deducing an information-theoretics based new technique to get an insight of the combined BER-induced and multiplexing/switching-induced CDVs in ATM networks. Algorithms on the CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in …

Evolution And Application Of A Parallel Algorithm For Explicit Transient Finite Element Analysis On Simd/Mimd Computers, Partha S. Das Jan 1997

Evolution And Application Of A Parallel Algorithm For Explicit Transient Finite Element Analysis On Simd/Mimd Computers, Partha S. Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The development of a parallel data structure and an associated elemental decomposition algorithm for explicit finite element analysis for massively parallel SIMD computer, the DECmpp 12000 (MasPar MP-1) machine, is presented, and then extended to implementation on the MIMD computer, Cray-T3D. The new parallel data structure and elemental decomposition algorithm are discussed in detail and is used to parallelize a sequential Fortran code that deals with the application of isoparametric elements for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of shells of revolution. The parallel algorithm required the development of a new procedure, called an 'exchange', which consists of an exchange of nodal …

Extending Use Cases And Interaction Diagrams To Develop Distributed System Architecture Requirements, John C. Hawkins Jan 1997

Extending Use Cases And Interaction Diagrams To Develop Distributed System Architecture Requirements, John C. Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Current object-oriented development methodologies do not introduce distributed system architectural aspects early enough in the system development cycle. A development partitioning scheme that includes the system level, in addition to the problem and application levels, will encourage analysis that includes elicitation of non-functional system requirements. These requirements include response time with respect to system communication load, fault tolerance, safety, security, and real-time deadlines, among others. They can be documented with an extended form of Jacobson's use cases. Where use cases describe how a system will work from a user's point of view, extended use cases add the capability to describe …

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti Jan 1997

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Growth management grew as a concept and policy objective in the 1970s and 1980s. The interrelationships of the state and local governments changed when Florida developed growth policy and local government implemented the policy. Nine mandatory elements to be included in a local comprehensive plan and seven mandatory concurrency elements of the 1985 Florida Growth Management Act were expensive elements for local government to implement. As a result, the issue of funding the impacts of growth drove the growth management agenda, leaving the question of compliance. The question is: Did Florida local government comply with the transportation concurrency element of …

Generating Formal Models From Uml Class Diagrams, Malcolm Keki Shroff Jan 1997

Generating Formal Models From Uml Class Diagrams, Malcolm Keki Shroff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The rich structuring mechanisms, and abstract modeling constructs available in most graphical object-oriented modeling methods (OOMs) facilitate the creation of abstract, visually-appealing, highly-structured graphical models. On the other hand, lack of formal semantics for the modeling notation can severely limit the utility of OOMs. Formal specification techniques (FSTs) support the creation of precise and analyzable specifications, but they can be tedious to create and difficult to read, especially by system developers not trained in formal methods. The complementary strengths of OOMs and FSTs suggest that their integration can result in techniques that can be used to create precise and analyzable …

Simultaneous Pressure-Temperature Measurements In A Heat Pipe, Madhavan. Jayanth Jan 1997

Simultaneous Pressure-Temperature Measurements In A Heat Pipe, Madhavan. Jayanth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

When a heat pipe operates with a large temperature difference between the two ends, the vapor liquid combination is not in thermodynamic equilibrium. The experiments showed that the vapor liquid mixture is in a higher state of saturation at the condenser as compared to other sections of the pipe. Correlations were obtained that relate the coefficient of thermal coupling alpha to the evaporator flux and mass of NCG (non-condensable gas). As mass of NCG is increased in the heat pipe, the thermal coupling coefficient alpha decreases. The evaporator heat flux is directly proportional to alpha. The coefficient alpha is related …

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman Jan 1997

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis presents the results of an empirical investigation of the applicability of genetic algorithms to a real-world problem in software reliability--the fault-prone module identification problem. The solution developed is an effective hybrid of genetic algorithms and neural networks. This approach (ENNs) was found to be superior, in terms of time, effort, and confidence in the optimality of results, to the common practice of searching manually for the best-performing net. Comparisons were made to discriminant analysis. On fault-prone, not-fault-prone, and overall classification, the lower error proportions for ENNs were found to be statistically significant. The robustness of ENNs follows from …

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri Jan 1997

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ocean ambient noise has been studied extensively in the past, and several models have been developed to predict its level and to characterize it in different ocean environments. However, most of these studies have been motivated by the need to reduce the negative effect of the ambient noise on measurements. Recently, several studies have used the ambient noise to obtain information about the ocean floor and to achieve passive target detection. This dissertation describes the development of an Ambient Noise Sonar (ANS) which can be used to measure ambient noise directivity to obtain information about the environment. The system was …

Software Metrics Collection: Two New Research Tools, Sylviane G. Jordan Jan 1997

Software Metrics Collection: Two New Research Tools, Sylviane G. Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Collecting software metrics manually could be a tedious, inaccurate, and subjective task. Two new tools were developed to automate this process in a rapid, accurate, and objective way. The first tool, the Metrics Analyzer, evaluates 19 metrics at the function level, from complete or partial systems written in C. The second tool, the Call Graph Generator, does not assess a metric directly, but generates a call graph based on a complete or partial system written in C. The call graph is used as an input to another tool (not considered here) that measures the coupling of a module, such as …

Statistical Modeling Of The Container Inventory Control In A Distribution Network, Weiming. Feng Jan 1997

Statistical Modeling Of The Container Inventory Control In A Distribution Network, Weiming. Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The study of the reusable container inventory control in a distribution network is crucial to the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the transportation systems. In order to minimize the total operation cost of such a transportation network system, all subsystems of the distribution network have to be optimized together as a whole system. In this study, we extended the inventory control concept and developed a multiple-inventory control model for the transportation network. We presented a systematic approach to address all those subsystems as interrelated systems. Mathematical models were developed for the transportation and container inventory control problems first. Then, the …

Hoarfrost, Mae Lynn Wallker Jan 1997

Hoarfrost, Mae Lynn Wallker

English Theses & Dissertations

Many of the poems in this collection reflect an engagement with an inherited literary tradition of ancient Greek, Latin, and Hebraic mythologies. The first section, entitled "Flint," deals with the ancient text of the Bible and with biblical and religious landscapes. The second section, "'The Seven," based on Aeschylus' The Seven Against Thebes, explores the possibilities of the reinterpretation and elaboration of an ancient story in a contemporary context. While "The Seven" literally refers to the seven gates at Thebes, the number is random, and does in fact represent an infinite number of stories. The penultimate section, "Hoarfrost," explores the …

Kramers-Kronig Anomalous Dispersion On Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Couplers And Tapers, Arnel C. Lavarias Jan 1997

Kramers-Kronig Anomalous Dispersion On Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Couplers And Tapers, Arnel C. Lavarias

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Kramers-Kronig relations couple the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant of a medium, namely the refractive index n(ω) and the extinction coefficient κ(ω). Changes in n(ω) due to normal and anomalous dispersion (Kramers-Kronig effect) are investigated for the first time using fiber optic couplers and tapers. Kramers-Kronig effect is induced by evanescent wave absorption in these devices. Couplers and tapers have oscillatory spectral outputs that are highly sensitive to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. Theoretical modeling of the Kramers-Kronig effect on couplers and tapers shows two distinct effects. First, the spectral outputs of these devices …

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1997

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently, there is considerable interest in scramjet engines for hypersonic aircraft and missiles. This paper presents preliminary calculations of the radiative heating of the walls of scramjet combustion chambers. The analysis assumes isothermal, constant property flow fields that are representative of actual combustor flow fields. The fuel is H2, and N2 is taken as inert. Temperature in the combustor is on the order of 2000-3000 K and the pressure is of the order of 5 atm. The combustion products consist mainly of H2O and OH. These gases are strong radiators in the infrared. Radiation heating can be significant because of …

A Finite Element Formulation For Aft Fan Duct Acoustic Radiation, Walter Eversman Jan 1997

A Finite Element Formulation For Aft Fan Duct Acoustic Radiation, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A finite element code has been developed for the prediction of the radiated acoustic field in and around the aft fan duct of a turbofan engine. The acoustic field is modeled based on the assumption that the steady flow in and around the nacelle is irrotational as is the acoustic perturbation. The geometry of the nacelle is axisymmetric, and the acoustic source is harmonic and decomposed into its angular harmonics. The steady flow is computed on the acoustic mesh and provides data for the acoustic calculations. The jet is included in the steady flow potential flow model by separating the …

Integrating Design Into The Sophomore And Junior Level Mechanics Courses, Douglas R. Carroll Jan 1997

Integrating Design Into The Sophomore And Junior Level Mechanics Courses, Douglas R. Carroll

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineering schools across the country are developing ways of integrating design into their curriculum, and a question that often arises is how to best integrate design into the sophomore and junior level courses. Freshman design projects or mechanical dissection courses are designed to give the students hands-on experience in conceptual design and construction, with little if any of the mathematical modeling normally used in engineering design. The capstone senior design project is a true engineering design experience, where students draw from their background to conceptualize, analyze, model, refine, and optimize a product to meet design, manufacturing, and life cycle cost …

Numerical Simulations Of Full- Scale Corroded Pipe Tests With Combined Loading, Samit Roy, S. Grigory, M. Smith, M. F. Kanninen, M. Anderson Jan 1997

Numerical Simulations Of Full- Scale Corroded Pipe Tests With Combined Loading, Samit Roy, S. Grigory, M. Smith, M. F. Kanninen, M. Anderson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ANSI/ASME B31G guideline has been useful to pipeline operators in assessing the integrity of corroded line pipe. Because large safety margins have had to be incorporated, the guidelines can be excessively conservative, which in turn can force costly repairs and replacements that may not actually be necessary. On the other hand, because the current guidelines consider only pressure loading and neglect bending and axial compression, they could give nonconservative failure predictions when combined loading exists. Therefore, a study was initiated to develop a theoretically sound methodology for assessing the integrity of corroded line pipe subjected to combined loading. A …

Chemical Stability Study Of Bace0.9Nd0.1O3−Α High Temperature Proton-Conducting Ceramic, Fanglin Chen, O. Toft Sorensen, Guangyao Meng, Dingkum Peng

Faculty Publications

BaCe0.9Nd0.1O3−a (BCN) ceramic is known to be an excellent high-temperature proton conductor and is a candidate electrolyte for use in solid oxide fuel cells, hydrogen or steam sensors and steam electrolysers. In this work, the chemical stability of BCN was investigated systematically by combining XRD and DTA–TG techniques to study its processing compatibility and its feasibility in potential applications. It was found that above 1200 °C, BCN reacted with alumina or zirconia, leading to the loss of barium and an excess of cerium. In cold water, both sintered BCN disks and powder samples had very …

Preparation Of Nd-Doped Baceo3 Proton-Conducting Ceramics By Homogeneous Oxalate Coprecipitation, Fanglin Chen, Ping Wang, O. Toft Sorensen, Guangyao Meng, Dingkum Peng Jan 1997

Preparation Of Nd-Doped Baceo3 Proton-Conducting Ceramics By Homogeneous Oxalate Coprecipitation, Fanglin Chen, Ping Wang, O. Toft Sorensen, Guangyao Meng, Dingkum Peng

Faculty Publications

Nd-doped BaCeO3 have been obtained from homogeneous coprecipitated oxalates when calcined at temperatures T≥1000 °C. Ball-milling of the calcined powders well disperses the agglomerates and consequently has a beneficial effect in the densification process. The calcination temperature has a major influence on the sintering process and powders calcined at 1100 °C possess good sinterabilities. The pressure applied to press the green pellets has no apparent influence on the sintered density at sintering temperatures of T≥1400 °C. By controlling the processing variables it was possible to obtain near fully dense Nd-doped BaCeO3 ceramics with homogeneous microstructure at a sintering …
