Applications Of Shallow Reflection Seismology., George Guoqi He Jan 1997

Applications Of Shallow Reflection Seismology., George Guoqi He

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Shallow seismic investigations were conducted at two sites in the Central Appalachian foreland area of West Virginia. Various seismic sources (EWG, primacord, shotgun, and sledge hammer) were used and compared. At one site, data were collected to investigate the effect of longwall mining on the overburden seismic properties. Expanded spread and common offset (CO) data were collected over active panels at different stages of mining. At a second site, EWG is evaluated using common midpoint (CMP) and CO sorting. The emplacement of longwall panels produced various seismically observable effects. Velocity reduction (VR) and signal absorption (SA) zones appear over both …

Burnout And Depression Among Roman Catholic Secular, Religious, And Monastic Clergy., Stephen Gerard Virginia Jan 1997

Burnout And Depression Among Roman Catholic Secular, Religious, And Monastic Clergy., Stephen Gerard Virginia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Burnout and depression among Roman Catholic secular, religious order, and monastic (Cistercian) priests was investigated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. Additionally, a Self-Report-Inventory was included (SRI) requesting information on demographics as well as four categories of predictor variables (vocational satisfaction, social support, spiritual activities, and physical environment) associated with burnout and depression. All participants were randomly selected from the National Catholic Director. The survey yielded a return rate of 90.67% with 63.11% completing the survey. Secular clergy reported significantly greater emotional exhaustion than did monastic clergy. Secular priests also had significantly …

Application Of Automotive Engine Control Technology To General Aviation Aircraft Powerplants., Christopher John Tennant Jan 1997

Application Of Automotive Engine Control Technology To General Aviation Aircraft Powerplants., Christopher John Tennant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The general aviation industry has lagged behind the automotive industry in powerplant development due to depressed economic conditions in their marketplace. Recent efforts to revitalize the industry have encountered the hindrance of thirty-year-old engine technology. Current automotive engine control technology has been reviewed for its potential for transfer to existing general aviation powerplants. Current automotive engine control technology was classified into basic, correction, and feedback elements for the control of fuel flow and ignition timing. The value of each element was assessed for application to a general aviation powerplant in terms of an aviation duty cycle. An extensive database produced …

Turbulence Modeling Of The Toroidal Wall Heat Load Due To Shear Flows Over Cavities In The Neutral Gas Blanket Divertor Regime, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala, Joseph Morrison Jan 1997

Turbulence Modeling Of The Toroidal Wall Heat Load Due To Shear Flows Over Cavities In The Neutral Gas Blanket Divertor Regime, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala, Joseph Morrison

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Heat loads to the target plate in reactor tokamaks are estimated to be orders of magnitude higher than those that can be withstood by known materials. In regimes of plasma detachment, there is strong evidence that plasma recombination occurs near the divertor plate, leading to a cold neutral gas blanket. Because of the strong coupling between the plasma and the neutrals within the divertor region, there is significant neutral flows along field lines up to Mach 1.2 and Reynolds numbers over 1000. The effects of three dimensional (3D) neutral turbulence within the gas blanket on heat deposition to the toroidal …

Reflection High-Energy Electron-Diffraction Study Of Melting And Solidification Of Pb On Graphite, Z. H. Zhang, P. Kulatunga, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The melting and solidification of Pb thin films on pyrolytic graphite are investigated in situ by reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Thin films with thicknesses of 4-150 monolayers are investigated. The surface morphology of the thin films were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Superheating of the Pb thin films by 4±2 to 12±2 K is observed from diffraction intensity measurements. Upon cooling the substrate, the Pb on graphite is seen to supercool by ∼69±4 K.

Femtosecond Photoemission Study Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics On Cu(100), J. Cao, Y. Gao, R. J. D. Miller, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali, D. A. Mantell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The energy dependence of the relaxation of photoexcited electrons in copper was measured using femtosecond time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to within 0.3 eV above the Fermi level. By performing lifetime measurements under different surface conditions, several surface dynamical processes were investigated. In particular, an anomalous long lifetime feature, which cannot be explained with Fermi-liquid theory, was observed in the lifetime-energy curve. This feature was found originating from the photoexcitation of the strongly localized Cu 3d electrons. ©1997 American Physical Society

Optical And Electrical Properties Of Cualse² Thin Films Obtained By Selenization Of Cu/Al/Cu... Al/Cu Layers Sequentially Deposited, J. C. Bernède, S. Marsillac, C. El Moctar, A. Conan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Optical and electrical properties of CuAlSe2 thin films obtained by selenization of Cu/Al/Cu...Al/Cu layers sequentially deposited have been investigated. It is shown that the expected energy gap (2.67 eV) is measured for well crystallized films, whereas a slightly higher value is measured for films not so well crystallized. Raman diffusion also shows differences between well and poorly crystallized films with peaks corresponding to the reference powder for the former samples. A p-type conductivity is found whatever the crystalline quality of the samples. The conductivity of the films depends also strongly on their crystalline properties. When the films are badly …

Cualse² Thin Films Obtained By Chalcogenization, S. Marsillac, K. Benchouk, C. El Moctar, J. C. Bernède, J. Pouzet, A Khellil, M. Jamali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

CuAlSe2 thin films have been synthesized by chalcogenization of thin Cu and Al layers sequentially deposited by evaporation under vacuum. It is shown that CuAlSe2 films are obtained with some Cu2-δSe and Se phases present at the surface. These surface phases are suppressed by annealing under vacuum and by chemical etching in a KCN solution. At the end of the process, the XRD spectrum demonstrates that textured CuAlSe2 films have been obtained with preferential orientation of the crystallites along the (112) direction. The gap of the films is 2.7 eV as expected. The …

Field Dependence-Independence And Sports With A Preponderance Of Closed Or Open Skills, Wenhao Liu Jan 1997

Field Dependence-Independence And Sports With A Preponderance Of Closed Or Open Skills, Wenhao Liu

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The focus of much research on field dependence-independence in sport settings has been on the relationship of field dependence-independence to sports with a preponderance of closed or open skills since 1970s. Although most of the previous research supported the claim that field dependence is of greater advantage to sports with a preponderance of open skills and field independence an advantage to sports with a preponderance of closed skills, several studies provided inconsistent and contradictory results. In addition, few of those studies involved adequate sports and sample size and some used a different sport classification. Little comparison, if any, of field …

Reclaiming The Law Of Suretyship, Barlow Burke Jan 1997

Reclaiming The Law Of Suretyship, Barlow Burke

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Business firms, including miners and mining companies, seek to prevent loss in various ways. When their assets are real property, a mortgage may provide collateral or other security for their activities. As security for a debt, a mortgage is only an effective remedy when it enables the creditor, such as a bank or other lender, to declare a default, seize the title in a foreclosure action, and then use the property to satisfy the mortgage debt. The Latin word for security was securitas, translated as sponsor. The idea of a mortgage lien or a security is that the property itself …

Pandora’S Box: Managerial Discretion And The Problem Of Corporate Philanthropy, Faith Stevelman Jan 1997

Pandora’S Box: Managerial Discretion And The Problem Of Corporate Philanthropy, Faith Stevelman

Articles & Chapters

Corporate giving to 501(c)(3) nonprofits (“charities”) is a more curious, varied and interesting phenomenon than commentators have recognized. Such “gifts” can be grouped generally into four categories. First, Giving to executives’ preferred charities represents an alternative form of compensation. Second, corporate philanthropy is often tied to the company’s commercial advertising, as a method of promoting consumer goodwill and sales. Thirdly, some corporate gifts may be motivated by their leaders’ desire to “give back” to the community, as an expression of corporate social responsibility. Finally, corporations may use contributions to politically enabled nonprofits, including think tanks and market-oriented/ “public interest” litigation …

Estimation Of The Longitudinal And Lateral-Directional Aerodynamic Parameters From Flight Data For The Nasa F/A-18 Harv., Alfonso Christopher Paris Jan 1997

Estimation Of The Longitudinal And Lateral-Directional Aerodynamic Parameters From Flight Data For The Nasa F/A-18 Harv., Alfonso Christopher Paris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research is focused on parameter identification for the NASA F/A-18 HARV. The HARV is currently used in the high alpha research program at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. In this study the longitudinal and lateral-directional stability derivatives are estimated from flight data using the Maximum Likelihood method coupled with a Newton-Raphson minimization technique. The estimated aerodynamic model describes the aircraft dynamics over a range of angle of attack from 10{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar} to 60{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar}. The mathematical model is built using the traditional static and dynamic derivative buildup. Flight data examined in this analysis are from a variety of maneuvers including …

Fuzzy Underwriting: An Application Of Fuzzy Logic To Medical Underwriting, Per-Johan Horgby, Ralf Lohse, Nicola-Alexander Sittaro

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

One of the most difficult issues in the medical underwriting of life insurance applicants is diabetes mellitus. Compiling the prognosticating parameters for diabetic applicants results in a complex system of mutually interacting factors. In addition, neither the prognosticating factors themselves nor their impact on the mortality risk is clear cut. We show how a fuzzy inference system can be used in underwriting diabetes mellitus. A fuzzy inference system can cope with the imprecise nature of medical parameters by converting them into fuzzy sets and aggregating them using mathematical techniques. The fuzzy underwriting system presented goes further than previous applications of …

Native Americans And Diabetes, Kristina K. Lee Jan 1997

Native Americans And Diabetes, Kristina K. Lee

Nebraska Anthropologist

Type II diabetes has reached epidemic proportions among Native Americans. It Is estimated that 12.2 percent of all Native Americans in the U.S. have Type II diabetes. This compares with 5.2 percent of the general U.S. population (Diabetes Statistics 1997). The highest rate of diabetes in the world is in the Pima Nation. Half of all Pima Indians age 35 and older have diabetes (West 1974). Diabetes causes severe health complications and is a major cause of
death for Native Americans.

An Intercomparison Of Two Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometers Used For Eddy Correlation Measurements Of Methane Flux In A Prairie Wetland, David P. Billesbach, Joon Kim, R.J. Clement, S.B Verman, F.G. Ullman Jan 1997

An Intercomparison Of Two Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometers Used For Eddy Correlation Measurements Of Methane Flux In A Prairie Wetland, David P. Billesbach, Joon Kim, R.J. Clement, S.B Verman, F.G. Ullman

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

An intercomparison was made between two tunable diode laser spectrometers used to measure methane fluxes by the eddy correlation technique at a prairie wetland site. The spectrometers were built by Unisearch Associates Inc. of Concord, Ontario, Canada, and Campbell Scientific Inc. of Logan, Utah, and were models EMS-50 and TGA-100, respectively. The fluxes were found to agree very well with each other in the range of 0 to 42 mg 􏰑 m-2 h-1.

The TGA-100 was observed to exhibit offset drifts. Most of the time, when the offset was only slowly changing (as compared to the eddy correlation averaging time), …

Fractured-Aquifer Hydrogeology From Geophysical Logs; The Passaic Formation, New Jersey, Roger H. Morin, Glen B. Carleton, Stephane Poirier Jan 1997

Fractured-Aquifer Hydrogeology From Geophysical Logs; The Passaic Formation, New Jersey, Roger H. Morin, Glen B. Carleton, Stephane Poirier

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Passaic Formation consists of gradational sequences of mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone, and is a principal aquifer in central New Jersey. Ground-water flow is primarily controlled by fractures interspersed throughout these sedimentary rocks and characterizing these fractures in terms of type, orientation, spatial distribution, frequency, and transmissivity is fundamental towards understanding local fluid-transport processes. To obtain this information, a comprehensive suite of geophysical logs was collected in 10 wells roughly 46 m in depth and located within a .05 km2 area in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. A seemingly complex, heterogeneous network of fractures identified with an acoustic televiewer was …

Statistical Modeling Of Agricultural Chemical Occurrence In Midwestern Rivers, William A. Battaglin, Donald A. Goolsby Jan 1997

Statistical Modeling Of Agricultural Chemical Occurrence In Midwestern Rivers, William A. Battaglin, Donald A. Goolsby

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Agricultural chemicals in surface water may constitute a human health risk or have adverse effects on aquatic life. Recent research on unregulated rivers in the midwestern USA documents that elevated concentrations of herbicides occur for 1–4 months following application in late spring and early summer. In contrast, nitrate concentrations in unregulated rivers are elevated during fall, winter, and spring months. Natural and anthropogenic variables of river drainage basins, such as soil permeability, amount of agricultural chemicals applied, or percentage of land planted in corn, affect agricultural chemical concentration and mass transport in rivers.

Presented is an analysis of selected data …

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson Jan 1997

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Knowledge of surficial snow properties such as grain size, surface roughness, and free-water content provides clues to the metamorphic state of snow on the ground, which in turn yields information on weathering processes and climatic activity. Remote sensing techniques using combined concurrent measurements of near-infrared passive reflectance and millimeter-wave radar backscatter show promise in estimating the above snow parameters. Near-infrared reflectance is strongly dependent on snow grain size and free-water content, while millimeter-wave backscatter is primarily dependent on free-water content and, to some extent, on the surface roughness. A neural-network based inversion algorithm has been developed that optimally combines near-infrared …

Analysis Of Environmental Data With Censored Observations, Shiping Liu, Jye-Chyi Lu, Dana Kolpin, William Meeker Jan 1997

Analysis Of Environmental Data With Censored Observations, Shiping Liu, Jye-Chyi Lu, Dana Kolpin, William Meeker

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The potential threats to humans and to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from environmental contamination could depend on the sum of the concentrations of different chemicals. However, direct summation of environmental data is not generally feasible because it is common for some chemical concentrations to be recorded as being below the analytical reporting limit. This creates special problems in the analysis of the data. A new model selection procedure, named forward censored regression, is introduced for selecting an appropriate model for environmental data with censored observations. The procedure is demonstrated using concentrations of atrazine (2-chloro- 4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine), deethylatrazine (DEA, 2-amino-4-chloro-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine), and deisopropylatrazine …

Oscillator strength spectra in the region of B 1s and C 1s excitation of three isomeric carborane cage compounds [closo-1,2-orthocarborane, closo-1,7-metacarborane, closo-1,12-paracarborane (C2B10H12)] have been derived from inner-shell electron energy loss spectra (ISEELS) recorded under electric dipole-scattering conditions. Total ion yield spectra recorded at high resolution with synchrotron radiation are also reported. The spectral features are assigned on the basis of comparisons with spectral predictions derived from the results of ab initio and semiempirical (extended Hückel) molecular orbital calculations. The isomeric and core level variations in the discrete core excitations …
