Spectral And Temporal Response Of Optical Nonlinearities, Arthur Dogariu Jan 1997

Spectral And Temporal Response Of Optical Nonlinearities, Arthur Dogariu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports a series of experiments directed towards nonlinear material characterization. A series of organic molecules, semiconductors, liquid crystals and inorganic clusters are investigated with Z-Scan and excite-probe measurements in order to determine the magnitude and dynamics of their nonlinear absorption and refraction. Much of this work is motivated by our search for a better optical limiter. The nonlinear absorption mechanism leading to optical limiting is investigated and its physical parameters are determined. The reverse saturable absorption (RSA) spectrum of several organic dyes is obtained in the visible in a single measurement by using an ultrafast nonlinear spectrometer. This …

The Effect Of Casting Shape And Size On Solidification Time: A New Approach, Murat Tiryakioǧlu, Ergin Tiryakioǧlu, Donald R. Askeland Jan 1997

The Effect Of Casting Shape And Size On Solidification Time: A New Approach, Murat Tiryakioǧlu, Ergin Tiryakioǧlu, Donald R. Askeland

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The limitations of Chvorinov's Rule for predicting the solidification time of a casting are discussed and previous studies intended to modify Chvorinov's Rule in order to express the effect of the size and shape of castings on solidification time are reviewed. A new model that introduces a shape factor is presented that predicts the solidification times of castings as well as or better than Chvorinov's Rule, particularly for more complex shapes. The validity of the new model is compared with the conventional Chvorinov's Rule by a statistical analysis of twelve sets of data obtained from the literature.

Free-Fall Drops, Tosses And Impacts Measured In The Small Parcel International Overnight Air Distribution Environment, Ann Marie Stevenson Jan 1997

Free-Fall Drops, Tosses And Impacts Measured In The Small Parcel International Overnight Air Distribution Environment, Ann Marie Stevenson

Theses

This study investigated the frequency and magnitude of free-fall drops, tosses and impacts encountered by a small package during overnight air transportation between Memphis, Tennessee and Gennevilliers, France. It was assumed that the package would experience similar hazards during each trip through this distribution environment. It was also assumed that the hazards the package encountered between the United States and France would be similar to the hazards it encountered between France and the United States. The package was instrumented with a data recorder to measure and record the events experienced by the package. The largest drop occurred from a height …

Promoting Gender Equity In The Elementary Learning Environment, Amy Elizabeth Roberts Jan 1997

Promoting Gender Equity In The Elementary Learning Environment, Amy Elizabeth Roberts

Graduate Research Papers

This research review discusses the importance of teaching in a gender equitable manner. It examines the negative interactions teachers have with their students, many times without being aware of it. The effects of each of these negative teacher behaviors are explained and practical strategies and interventions are suggested to reduce the negative interactions.

Many of these strategies can be teacher directed, but strategies involving students, colleagues, and parents are also presented. The interventions are beneficial not only to female students but to male students as well. The Gender Expectations and Student Achievement (GESA) teacher training program is discussed and many …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Search Features Of General Electronic Encyclopedias, Barb Ehlers

Graduate Research Papers

This research study is a descriptive analysis of the search features of general electronic encyclopedias in the CD-ROM format. This study describes the browse, analytical and hierarchical search features commonly found in seven electronic encyclopedias. The study found that browse search features are a linear index of titles or subjects, analytical search features offer simple and complex options while the software searches full text, and hierarchical search features offer subject breakdown from broad categories to specific articles. Common trends and variations are described through the use of text, screen shots and tables.

A Comprehensive Review Of Treatment Options For Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kristin Vanderah Jan 1997

A Comprehensive Review Of Treatment Options For Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kristin Vanderah

Graduate Research Papers

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder affecting between 3 and 5 percent of school-age children, manifests as a combination of three core skill deficits: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The deficits have been found to present children with many difficulties in both home and school settings. Thus, comprehensive treatment for individuals with ADHD is of paramount importance to their development and their academic and social experiences. The content of this paper is comprised of a review of the recent research that has been published regarding the three major theoretical orientations of ADHD interventions (pharmacological, behavioral, and multimodal treatment). All of …

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary Jan 1997

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary

Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, processor speed has become significantly higher than memory and disk speeds. Therefore, exploiting the memory hierarchy has emerged as a key problem in parallel computing. An out-of-core computation is one which operates on disk-resident data. This paper uses the concept of chain vectors for tiling out-of-core codes. The theory of chain vectors is discussed and extended, and their relation to reuse vectors is established. Then, chain vectors are used to optimize the tile size, shape, allocation and scheduling for out-of-core codes.

Gulf and Caribbean Research

We report a northward range extension of the zooxanthellate scleractinian coral Siderastrea siderea (Ellis and Solander) in the Gulf of Mexico. Several small, living colonies of S. siderea have been obtained in dredge samples from a site located at 29º 55.5' N, 087º 28.4' W in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Prior to these collections the northernmost occurrence of S. siderea in the Gulf of Mexico was reported as 27º 54.5' N, 093º 35.8' W, on the East Flower Garden Bank, in the western Gulf of Mexico. In the eastern Gulf of Mexico, S. siderea is not reported occurring on …

Mass/Heat Transfer In A Ribbed Blade Coolant Passage With Cylindrical Vortex Generators: The Effect Of Generator-Rib Spacing, Richard G. Hibbs, Sumanta Acharyal, Yi Chen, Dimitris E. Nikitopoulos Jan 1997

Mass/Heat Transfer In A Ribbed Blade Coolant Passage With Cylindrical Vortex Generators: The Effect Of Generator-Rib Spacing, Richard G. Hibbs, Sumanta Acharyal, Yi Chen, Dimitris E. Nikitopoulos

Faculty Publications

The effect of vortex-generators on the heat transfer from the internally ribbed passages of a turbine blade coolant channel is studied experimentally using a mass-transfer technique. Cylindrical vortexgenerators placed directly above the ribs have been used in this study. Results are reported on the effect of the spacing between the vortex-generator and the ribs. Detailed distributions of the Sherwood number contours and the centerline Sherwood number distributions are presented. Three generator-ribspacing/ rib-height (s/e) values of 0.55, 1, and 1.5 are considered. It is shown that at small generator-rib spacings (s/e=0.55), the two act as a single element, and lead to …

Diary Of A Backpacker Rockstar: A Uni Student's Guide To Traveling Western Europe, Jason James Joseph Sloan Jan 1997

Diary Of A Backpacker Rockstar: A Uni Student's Guide To Traveling Western Europe, Jason James Joseph Sloan

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

During the summer of 1996 I dedicated two months of my life to backpacking Western Europe. It was the most incredible experience of my life. It is my belief that many students at UNI would love to have the opportunity to travel as I did. In fact, a journey across Europe is completely within the reaches of the typical UNI student. Planning such a trip is systematic and reasonably simple. From obtaining passports to buying airline tickets and train passes, all aspects of planning a European backpacking excursion can be accomplished easily.

Professor John Charles Huston: A Colleague And Friend For All Seasons, John R. Price Jan 1997

Professor John Charles Huston: A Colleague And Friend For All Seasons, John R. Price

Washington Law Review

For almost thirty years Jack Huston has been a valued colleague and friend of mine who was particularly helpful in making my move from practice to teaching as smooth as possible. Jack was a unique colleague from another perspective--during his entire teaching career he was incredibly dedicated and loyal to the law school, often at considerable personal inconvenience and expense. Colleagues and deans could always count on Jack to "carry the flag," rally the alumni, conceive and coordinate a CLE program, host visiting dignitaries, and otherwise put his fingers in the dike.

A Legal Roadmap To Privatizing Government Services In Washington State, Nancy Buonanno Grennan Jan 1997

A Legal Roadmap To Privatizing Government Services In Washington State, Nancy Buonanno Grennan

Washington Law Review

Government employers contract out and privatize some of their functions as one way of meeting the public's need for more efficient and effective services. The Washington State Supreme Court, in Washington Federation of State Employees v. Spokane Community College, interpreted the state's civil service laws as imposing a nearly complete bar on contracting out at the state level. That decision was later extended to local public sector employers, who already face complex collective bargaining rules that require them to bargain with unions about contracting out work that has been done or that could be done by their unionized employees. …

In Re Mahurkar: The Federal Circuit's Misapplied Focus On Commercialization In "On Sale" Bar Analysis, Hugh H. Matsubayashi Jan 1997

In Re Mahurkar: The Federal Circuit's Misapplied Focus On Commercialization In "On Sale" Bar Analysis, Hugh H. Matsubayashi

Washington Law Review

In In re Mahurkar Double Lumen Hemodialysis Catheter Patent Litigation, the Federal Circuit held that a "sham" sale of an invention did not implicate the statutory "on sale" bar, which makes unpatentable any invention placed on sale more than one year prior to the filing of a patent application. This Note analyzes the Mahurkar decision's focus on the lack of commercialization of the invention in finding that a valid U.C.C. sale of an invention already reduced to practice does not implicate the "on sale" bar. It argues that under traditional "on sale" bar standards, a commercialization analysis is only …

Keynote Address: Social Justice Week 1997, Peter Edelman

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

I am pleased to be here not just to talk about the question of what happens to poor people under the new welfare legislation, but also because you have asked me to speak as part of your Social Justice Week. It is very important that you have Social Justice Week and that so many people are so interested in participating. As I will say in more detail later, it is urgent that we get beyond the debate over welfare at the same time as we pay careful attention to the implementation of the new welfare legislation. Our real effort has …

Affirmative Action In Question: A Coherent Theory For Section 15(2), Mark A. Drumbl, John D.R. Craig Jan 1997

Affirmative Action In Question: A Coherent Theory For Section 15(2), Mark A. Drumbl, John D.R. Craig

Scholarly Articles

Affirmative action programs are constitutionally protected in Canada under section 15(2) of the Charter. This section has received little judicial interpretation and, consequently, no coherent approach to the interpretation of section 15(2) has been developed. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to define the meaning of section 15(2), as affirmative action programs can be used to perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination while being given a blanket endorsement through section 15(2). The authors suggest that section 15(2) does not merely promote substantive equality, as this is the function of section 15(1), but embodies the social justice conception of equality, which allocates social …
