Practical Considerations On Color Image Enhancement Using Homomorphic Filtering, Liviu I. Voicu, Harley R. Myler, Arthur R. Weeks

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We present a study concerning the practical possibilities of using the homomorphic filtering for color image enhancement, Two of the most popular color models, RGB and C-Y (color difference), are employed and the results are comparatively discussed. The homomorphic filtering has proven to be a viable tool for both color models considered.

Mathematical Modeling Of Melting During Laser Materials Processing, J. Xie, A. Kar Jan 1997

Mathematical Modeling Of Melting During Laser Materials Processing, J. Xie, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Melting is encountered in almost all laser materials processing. This article deals with a one-dimensional heat conduction problem to investigate the melting rate during laser materials processing. The problem is solved approximately to obtain a correlation among melt depth, power density, and laser irradiation time. Based on this correlation, the dynamics of melting, a relationship between the melt depth and power density and an average melting velocity are expressed by simple analytic formulas. These expressions are further simplified for high power densities (I greater than or equal to 10(9) W/m(2)). The times to reach the melting and boiling temperatures at …

Melting And Vaporization For Large-Area Film Removal With A Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser, J. Xie, A. Kar Jan 1997

Melting And Vaporization For Large-Area Film Removal With A Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser, J. Xie, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Large-area film removal with lasers is a physical process of melting and vaporization of films. A mathematical model is developed to simulate the melting and vaporization of films under the irradiation of a chemical oxygen-iodine laser. The cross section of the film after laser scanning and the substrate surface temperature during laser irradiation are presented. There is an optimum laser power at which relatively wide films can be removed by maintaining low temperature at the substrate surface. The optimum laser power is associated with other process parameters. The results of film removal with TEM31 and TEM00 beams are compared, and …

Diophantine Type Fractional Derivative Representation Of Structural Hysteresis, Part I: Formulation, Joe Padovan, Jerzy T. Sawicki Jan 1997

Diophantine Type Fractional Derivative Representation Of Structural Hysteresis, Part I: Formulation, Joe Padovan, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Based on a diophantine representation of the operational powers, a fractional derivative modelling scheme is developed to simulate frequency dependent structural damping. The diophantine set of powers is established by employing the curvature properties of the defining empirical data set. These together with a remezed least square scheme are employed to construct a Chebyschev like optimal differintegro simulation. Based on the use of the rational form resulting from the diophantine representation, a composition rule is introduced to reduce the differintegro simulation to first order form. The associated eigenvalue/vector properties are then explored. To verify the robustness-stability accuracy of the overall …

An Introduction To Data Envelopment Analysis In Technology Management, Keith Hollingsworth, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Productivity is a major source of competitive advantage but improving productivity requires analysis and productivity is getting more difficult to measure as economies become more knowledge, service, and innovation intensive. In this paper, we will provide an introduction to a powerful productivity analysis tool, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA is a flexible tool originally created in the 1970s for examining the relative efficiency of non-profit institutions. Researchers have found many more applications and created numerous extensions to DEA. This paper provides an introduction to DEA, a summary of some of the most important modeling variations, and examples of applications relevant …

Reading Together provides an in-depth look at how America Reads is working in California. It describes how America Reads operates in schools and communities and offers insight into what makes for strikingly successful programs.

As the data and case studies show, America Reads programs are doing great things throughout this state. Since the spring of 1998, more than 9,300 California college students have worked as America Reads tutors in more than 900 schools. Because of America Reads, almost 25,000 California elementary school children have so far received the extra help they need to learn to read and their numbers will …

The Work Of Citizenship And The Problem Of Service-Learning, Harry C. Boyte, James Farr Jan 1997

The Work Of Citizenship And The Problem Of Service-Learning, Harry C. Boyte, James Farr

Civic Engagement

The debates about service learning are not merely internecine squabbles between educators over methods and manners of out-of-class instruction. Or at least they don't have to be. For they reflect and are implicated in broader debates about community service and civic education more generally, as well as about citizenship, public policy, and even our understandings of American democracy and history. Take a couple of snapshots of these broader debates, now and then.

Ellipsometric And Raman Spectroscopic Study Of Thermally Formed Films On Titanium, E. Hristova, Lj. Arsov, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Thermal films on titanium surfaces were formed by heating titanium samples in air at atmospheric pressure. The optical constants, thickness, and structure of the formed films at various temperatures and times of heating were investigated by ellipsometry and Raman spectroscopy. The complex index of refraction and the thickness of generated films were determined by comparing the experimental loci and obtained by ellipsometric measurements with theoretical computed vs. curves. It was found that the thickness in homogeneity and porosity of formed films increase with increasing temperature and the duration of the thermal treatment. Beyond a certain critical temperature, the appearance of …

The Effects Of Organic Compounds On Inhibition Of Hydrogen Permeation Through A Mild Steel Membrane, H. A. Duarte, D. M. See, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The effectiveness of 5-(4-pyridyl)-2,7-nonadiene, and 1 phenyl-2-propyn-ol (PP) on inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction on a 1010 steel membrane and on the degree of hydrogen ingress into the membrane was determined. Hydrogen evolution rates and permeation currents were monitored as a function of time at different applied potentials. In the presence of 0.5 g/liter PP in the electrolyte, the hydrogen discharge and permeation current density were inhibited by 98 and95%, respectively.

Randomised Shuffle And Applied Misinformation: An Enhanced Model For Contact-Based Smart-Card Serial Data Transfer, Michael Collins Jan 1997

Randomised Shuffle And Applied Misinformation: An Enhanced Model For Contact-Based Smart-Card Serial Data Transfer, Michael Collins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contact-based smart-cards, which comply to the International Standard IS0-7816, communicate with their associated read/write machines via a single bi-directional serial link. This link is easy to monitor with inexpensive equipment and resources, enabling captured data to be removed for later examination. In many contact-based smart-cards the logical abilities are provided by eight-bit microcontroller units (MCU) which are slow at performing effective cryptographic functions. Consequently, for expediency, much data may be transferred in plain-text across the vulnerable communications link, further easing an eavesdropper's task. Practitioners in military communications protect transmitted information by varying a link's carrier frequency in an apparently random …

Selecting The "Best" Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Timothy R. Anderson, Akin Uslu Jan 1997

Selecting The "Best" Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Timothy R. Anderson, Akin Uslu

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most important strengths of Data Envelopment Analysis, (DEA), is that it allows almost complete freedom in the way that each decision making unit, (DMU), evaluates itself relative to its peers. This tends to result in many DMUs receiving a high efficiency score. Particularly when DEA is applied in a decision making context, it may be desirable to select a single option rather than determining the set of efficient alternatives in ranking efficient DMU or to Assist selecting a "best" DMU. Several extensions to DEA have been proposed and used. This paper examines, compares, and integrates a variety …
