Problem. VisionQuest National Limited is a treatment and education program for court-placed students. Recruiting and retaining quality teachers is a problem faced by VisionQuest administrators. Over the course of a school year, there are usually several teaching-position vacancies, and turnover is high, especially in the first few months of employment.

Method. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter, a derivative of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, was administered to all VisionQuest teachers to determine their personality type. The personality types of the VisionQuest teachers were compared to those of teachers in the general population. Length of employment of VisionQuest teachers was also analyzed in …

A variational spherical harmonics (DPN) method is used in conjunction with the finite element method to solve the transport of neutron beams. The method is developed for finite axisymmetric cylindrical geometry. In this model, the angular distribution along the path of neutron travel is separated into two sub-ranges of the forward and the backward moving particles. The system of the model equations is cast in terms of an even and an odd vector analogue to the even-parity transport technique. The response of the rigid pavement slab-joint-base structural system is complex, and accurately predicting the response of such a system requires a significant degree of analytical sophistication. The research reported in this dissertation has defined some essential features required to adequately model the system and has demonstrated a technique to develop a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the rigid pavement slab-joint-foundation structural system. Analysis of experimental data from the 1950s confirms that explicit modeling of dowels is not required to model the structural response of the system. This dissertation postulates that the economic transition from manufacturing to service employment is a major factor leading to high rates of economic deprivation and crime in major U.S. cities. By integrating theory and research from several substantive areas of sociology, I extend macro-level research in criminology and develop a social organization/social control explanation of city crime rates. I use both cross-sectional and longitudinal regression methods to investigate the direct and indirect effects of a city's industrial structure on race-disaggregated rates of homicide, robbery, and burglary. An advanced prototype computer-assisted deep water drilling well control system was developed using process control technology. The goal of the system was to improve rig safety by reducing the potential for surface and underground blowouts through providing enhanced bottom hole and casing seat pressure control during the well kill process. Properties and processes in silicon nitride and graphite are investigated using molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. Scalable and portable multiresolution algorithms are developed and implemented on parallel architectures to simulate systems containing 10$\sp6$ atoms interacting via realistic potentials. Structural correlations, mechanical properties, and thermal transport are studied in microporous silicon nitride as a function of density. The formation of pores is observed when the density is reduced to 2.6 g/cc, and the percolation occurs at a density of 2.0 g/cc. The density variation of the thermal conductivity and the Young's modulus are well described by power laws with scaling exponents of 1.5 …

An Adiabatic Bond Charge Model For The Phonon Properties Of Ii-Vi Materials And Superlattices., Bhagwan Das Rajput

I present an extension of the adiabatic Bond Charge model to study lattice dynamics of highly polar II-VI semi-conductors and semi-metals and CdTe-HgTe superlattices grown along (001) and (111) directions. This is the first attempt to study phonons in CdTe-HgTe superlattices. My results for phonon dispersion, specific heat and elastic constants for the six bulk materials are in good agreement with experimental observations. The best parameter sets for the six compounds show trends that are consistent with the parameters for group IV elemental semi-conductors and III-V compounds. For CdTe-HgTe superlattices, I find that the long range Coulomb interaction between particles …
