Learning To See Analogies: A Connectionist Exploration, Douglas S. Blank
Learning To See Analogies: A Connectionist Exploration, Douglas S. Blank
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
The goal of this dissertation is to integrate learning and analogy-making. Although learning and analogy-making both have long histories as active areas of research in cognitive science, not enough attention has been given to the ways in which they may interact. To that end, this project focuses on developing a computer program, called Analogator, that learns to make analogies by seeing examples of many different analogy problems and their solutions. That is, it learns to make analogies by analogy. This approach stands in contrast to most existing computational models of analogy in which particular analogical mechanisms are assumed a priori …

Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud
Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud
Electrical Engineering
Setting signals at intersections to minimize the queue length and vehicle delay time is a key goal in traffic management. In this paper, a new control strategy for a signalized traffic intersection is developed by applying Markovian decision control theory. Statistical analysis of simulation results with different arrival rates indicate the excellent potential of this approach.

Audit Of The Department Of Energy's Contracts With Envirocare Of Utah, Inc., U.S. Department Of Energy, Office Of Inspector General, Office Of Audit Services, Eastern Regional Audit Office
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Department of Energy (Department) is responsible for protecting human health and the environment by providing an effective and efficient system that treats, stores, and disposes of Departmental waste. The Department disposes of some of its waste at Envirocare of Utah, Inc., (Envirocare) a commercial treatment and disposal facility in Clive, Utah. The audit objective was to determine whether the Department and its contractors were using the most favorable rates available for the disposal of waste at Envirocare.
We found that the Department's contractors did not always use the most favorable rates available. Although volume discounts were available under Departmentwide …

Facts: Appellant sued respondent for damages under the Copyright Ordinance, arguing that respondent had copied several price lists that appellant had published in at least eleven different booklets. The district court found that the respondent, despite copying from several different sources, had, for the purposes of section 3A of the Copyright Ordinance, only committed one single act of infringement. The district court also held that once appellant had failed to prove actual damages, it could not sue for statutory damages.
Held: The Court held that, for the purposes of section 3A of the Copyright Ordinance, an "infringement" should be interpreted …

Optimal Block Encoding And Optimal Entropy For Lossless Image Compression, Larry Ray Dennis
Optimal Block Encoding And Optimal Entropy For Lossless Image Compression, Larry Ray Dennis
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis, a novel approach is designed using a quad-tree stack structure to encode the image to determine the optimal block size at the optimal and effective entropy in the lossless image compression method. Proof is given through encoding of the predictor and randomly constructed planes. There is a high degree of relationship between the placement of bits in the planes. Clearly results shows that use of the optimal entropy and encoding block sizes will increase the compression ratio using the lossless method. The cost of using the block size methods to encoding and entropy is discussed and proven. …
Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Faculty Publications
In order to be useful, a learning algorithm must be able to generalize well when faced with inputs not previously presented to the system. A bias is necessary for any generalization, and as shown by several researchers in recent years, no bias can lead to strictly better generalization than any other when summed over all possible functions or applications. This paper provides examples to illustrate this fact, but also explains how a bias or learning algorithm can be “better” than another in practice when the probability of the occurrence of functions is taken into account. It shows how domain knowledge …

A Unification Between Nonlinear-Nonquadratic Optimal Control And Integrator Backstepping, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Wassim M. Haddad, Jerry L. Fausz, Vijaya-Sekhar Chellaboina
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper we develop an optimality-based framework for backstepping controllers. Specifically, using a nonlinear-nonquadratic optimal control framework we develop a family of globally stabilizing backstepping controllers parametrized by the cost functional that is minimized. Furthermore, it is shown that the control Lyapunov function guaranteeing closed-loop stability is a solution to the steady-state Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation for the controlled system and thus guarantees both optimality and stability. The results are specialized to the case of integrator backstepping.

Silica Gel: An Experiment In Surface Area, Scott Vermullen
Silica Gel: An Experiment In Surface Area, Scott Vermullen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Within the paper industry today, there are advancements in technology every year, every month, most likely every day as well. These new technologies work to obtain the same major goals. These goals include faster machine speeds for improved output. They-include less, pollution, and in fact are working towards a pollutant free system. And finally, product quality for today's high demanding consumer market.
To realize these goals, paper makers must effectively utilize the most amount of fiber and filler possible in their sheet. That is, they must bind up fines and filler within the sheet rather than sending it to the …
Properties Of Grb Host Galaxies, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band
Properties Of Grb Host Galaxies, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band
Publications
The transients following GRB970228 and GRB970508 showed that these (and probably all) GRBs are cosmological. However, the host galaxies expected to be associated with these and other bursts are largely absent, indicating that either bursts are further than expected or the host galaxies are underluminous. This apparent discrepancy does not invalidate the cosmological hypothesis, but instead host galaxy observations can test more sophisticated models.
