Vertical Profiles Of Bromoform In Snow, Sea Ice, And Seawater In The Canadian Arctic, William T. Sturges, Glenn F. Cota, Paul T. Buckley

Bromoform (CHBr₃) was measured in vertical profiles from the snow surface through the snowpack, sea ice, and water column to the seafloor at Resolute Bay, Canada, in the sprig of 1992. Elevated concentrations of bromoform were observed in both the ice (32-266 ng L^-1 by liquid water volume) and seawater (~ 20 ng L^-1 ) at the ice-water interface, associated with bromoform emission from ice microalgae. A surprising finding was a second horizon of high bromoform concentrations (336-367 ng L^-1) in sea ice at the snow-ice interface. Chlorophyll and salinity were also elevated in …

1. Kv1.5 is a delayed rectifier-type potassium channel. We have examined the localization of the channel protein using a polyclonal antibody against Kv1.5. This channel is expressed in numerous regions of the brain, primarily in glial cells. Its expression is particularly intense in the endfoot processes which abut the microvasculature of the brain. It is also expressed in the cell bodies and cellular processes in the pituitary.2. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of prolonged bed rest (BR) on the peak isometric force (P_o) and unloaded shortening velocity (V_o) of single Ca²⁺-activated muscle fibers. Soleus muscle biopsies were obtained from eight adult males before and after 17 days of 6° head-down BR. Chemically permeabilized single fiber segments were mounted between a force transducer and position motor, activated with saturating levels of Ca²⁺, and subjected to slack length steps. V_o was determined by plotting the time for force redevelopment vs. the slack step distance. …

The erbAα gene encodes two α-thyroid hormone receptor isoforms, TRα1 and TRα2, which arise from alternatively processed mRNAs, erbAα1 (α1) and erb α2 (α2). The splicing and alternative polyadenylation patterns of these mRNAs resemble that of mRNAs encoding different forms of immunoglobulin heavy chains, which are regulated at the level of alternative processing during B cell differentiation. This study examines the levels of erbAα mRNA in eight B cell lines representing four stages of differentiation in order to determine whether regulation of the alternatively processed α1 and α2 mRNAs parallels the processing of immunoglobulin heavy chain mRNAs. To mitigate losses due to insects. insect resistant cultivars are sought as a major tactic in the development of integrated pest management strategies. The integration of insect resistant cultivars with other pest management tactics contributes to crop pest management strategies that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Heat units, expressed in growing degree-days (GDD), are frequently used to describe the timing of biological processes. The basic equation used is GDD = [(T_MAX + T_MIN)/2] - T_BASE where T_MAX and T_MIN are daily maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively, and T_BASE is the base temperature. Two methods of interpreting this equation for calculating GDD are: (1) if the daily mean temperature is less than the base, it is set equal to the base temperature, or (2) if T_MAX or T_MIN < T_BASE they are reset equal to T …

This study was conducted to identify sediment movement within a strip intercropping system in southwestern Iowa during the third year of a three-year crop rotation. Soil loss, resulting from the application of simulated rainfall to a Monona silt loam soil, was measured from individual corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr), and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) strips, and from multiple strips which included all three crops. Studies of dispersal polymorphism in insects have played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of population dynamics, life history evolution, and the physiological basis of adaptation. Comparative data on wing-dimorphic insects provide the most definitive evidence to date that habitat persistence selects for reduced dispersal capability. The increased fecundity of flightless females documents that a fitness tradeoff exists between flight capability and reproduction. However, only recently have studies of nutrient consumption and allocation provided unequivocal evidence that this fitness trade-off results from a trade-off of internal resources. We have used the ciliate Euplotes to study the role of DNA polymerase in telomeric C strand synthesis. Euplotes provides a unique opportunity to study C strand synthesis without the complication of simultaneous DNA replication because millions of new telomeres are made at a stage in the life cycle when no general DNA replication takes place. Previously we showed that the C-strands of newly synthesized telomeres have a precisely controlled length while the G-strands are more heterogeneous. This study examined the relationship between a child’s perception of interparental conflict and a child’s level of self-esteem and social skills. Furthermore, gender and grade differences were analyzed to determine how they play a role in this relationship between interparental conflict and a child’s level of self-esteem and social skills. Self-report questionnaires were administered to 127 5th grade (elementary school) students and 137 6th grade (junior high school) students. Results indicated that a child’s self-report of interparental conflict was significantly and negatively related to the child’s self-report of self-esteem and social skills, even when controlling for the intercorrelations between self-esteemand …

Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin

Three pilot studies provided data exploring the roles of values, threats to these selfsame values and emotions in the perception of risk. Results indicate that judgements about risk are associated with a wide variety of values and perceived threats to values. The findings also revealed that the negative emotions such as sadness, worry, anger, disgust, helplessness and uncertainty were significantly related to risk perception. The authors' discussion advances the view that the range of topics considered appropriate to risk communication can be extended to the area of public opinion and rhetorical studies.

Brains from 41 aged canines (≥10 years of age) were examined immunohistochemically to characterize the laminar distribution and age-related progression of β-amyloid (Aβ) in frontal cortex. We classified the Aβ patterns into four distinct types. Type I was characterized by small, faint deposits of Aβ in deep cortical layers. Type II consisted of diffuse deposits of Aβ mainly in layers V and VI. Type III had both dense plaques in superficial layers, and diffuse deposits in deep layers. Finally, Type IV had solely dense plaques throughout all layers of cortex. We compared the A …

Mid- to late-Holocene vegetation change from a remote high-desert site was reconstructed using plant macrofossils and pollen from 9 packrat middens ranging from 0 to 5400 yr in age. Presettlement middens consistently contained abundant macrofossils of plant species palatable to large herbivores that are now absent or reduced, such as winterfat (Ceratoides lanata) and ricegrass (Stipa hymenoides). Macrofossils and pollen of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis), sagebrush (Artemisia spp.), and roundleaf buffaloberry (Shepherdia rotundifolia) were recently reduced to their lowest levels for the 5400-yr record. We conducted an experiment on eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) during August–September 1995 near Los Alamos, New Mexico, (1) to ascertain if lizards that were relocated short distances exhibited homing, (2) to investigate a possible barrier to movement, and (3) to determine the effect of translocating individuals from a transplant area on lizards in a recipient area. We relocated 15 of an estimated population of 39 (95% CI 36–45) lizards an average distance of 46 m. Fourteen of 15 translocated lizards returned to within 6.81 (s_x̄ = 1.43) m of the original capture location. Movement distances …
