Urban sprawl is one of the biggest issues facing communities throughout the country today. Urban sprawl is defined as a detrimental form of growth that occurs on the fringe of communities. Most urban areas in the United States are affected by this type of growth; This thesis will address the problems of urban sprawl within the Las Vegas Valley. It documents the effects of urban sprawl on the Valley's infrastructure cost, transportation, resource depletion and the environment; Strategies will be offered to control urban sprawl. Root growth under elevated atmospheric CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} was examined with the intention of quantifying the effects of elevated CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} on growth, cell wall characteristics and root carbon status of three herbaceous legumes: Phaseolus vulgaris L., Phaseolus acutifolius Gray and Pisum sativum L. Plants were grown hydroponically in 0.1 strength Hoagland's solution in the UNLV greenhouse at atmospheric CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} concentrations of ambient (350 {dollar}\mu{dollar}mol mol{dollar}\sp{-1}),{dollar} 1.5x ambient (550 {dollar}\mu{dollar}mol mol{dollar}\sp{-1}){dollar} and 2x ambient (700 {dollar}\mu{dollar}mol mol{dollar}\sp{-1}).{dollar} Root biomass increased under elevated CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} for P. acutifolius and P. sativum, but not for P. vulgaris. The individual chapters of this Dissertation were designed to examine desert bighorn habitat, and the disjunct nature of that habitat. The findings of the first chapter illustrated that although 30 m elevation data yielded a more accurate depiction of the landscape, 100 m data was still adequate for determining habitat quality. The second chapter illustrated that the traditional bighorn habitat model was inadequate when applied to four Eastern Mojave Desert mountain ranges because of its unrealistic distance to permanent water requirement. In order to determine whether heat shock proteins (HSP) can be used as indicators of environmental stress in the mammalian organism Peromyscus leucopus, three doses of each of two chemical stresses, cadmium chloride and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), were given intraperitoneally for 14 days. Proteins extracted from liver samples were compared by one-dimensional gel electrophoresis to liver protein samples from heat shocked and control animals. HSPs of 105,78, and 43 kDa were cadmium inducible. Non-heat shocked cadmium inducible proteins of 118, 55, and 47 kDa were seen. 2,4,5-T induced an increase in a 91 kDa protein. This paper examines retiree recruitment as a strategy in state economic development policy. The study employs a theoretical framework of policy adoption and lesson-drawing to answer the questions (1) why would a state adopt the policy of retiree recruitment and (2) how is the policy adopted. Three states in different stages of retiree recruitment policy adoption were selected as case studies. Results show that different strategies in policy adoption were operating in each case study state. The primary purpose of this study was to determine how well academic, demographic, and programmatic variables could explain and predict variation in graduate performance on NCLEX-RN in one baccalaureate nursing program. The study specifically sought to address the void in empirical research in the area of programmatic variables predictive of NCLEX-RN performance. The study also investigated whether the changes made in NCLEX-RN from a paper-and-pencil test to computer adaptive testing (CAT), which was initiated in 1994, could help explain variations experience in program pass rate between 1990 and 1996. The present study investigated differences in the conceptualization of death among children and adults with and without mental retardation (MR). Thirty-five adults (17 adults without MR, 18 adults with MR) and 29 children (21 children without MR, 8 children with MR) participated in the study. The study employed a 2 x 2 design with Age and MR as the factors. Participants completed several questionnaires, cognitive developmental tasks, and intelligence assessments. Results indicated that diagnosis of mental retardation was slightly more influential than chronological age in determining participants' responses about death. This effect was evident for the Universality and Causality components …

The problem of robust design and optimization for designs with varying operating conditions is considered in this work. A robust design optimization tool (RDOT) has been developed in this work. The tool is constructed with building blocks: an Artificial Neural Network, a Response Evaluator (e.g., FEA, etc.), an Optimizer based on Quadratic Programming, Cooperative Game Theory, Design of Experiments, and Taguchi Methods. The tool is fully codified into a computer program, and it demands very little designer insight into the problem under consideration. This descriptive correlational study was conducted to explore the relationships among the constructs of Critical Thinking (as measured by the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal), Learning Style (as measured by the Kolb Learning Style Inventory), and Locus of Control (as measured by the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Scale) in baccalaureate nursing students. Dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 changed the government bureaucracy and dismantled the centrally controlled economic system. Clomipramine (CLI) administered to neonatal rats has been purported to induce behavioral abnormalities in adulthood analogous to human endogenous depression (Vogel et al., 1990). Based on recent findings (e.g., Beeler, 1994; Goodman, Beeler, & Birkle, 1995), wherein CLI animals were shown to have neurobiological correlates distinct to humans diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the current study was proposed to investigate whether CLI induced alterations might be more analogous to, and a model for, PTSD. Morphological plasticity of astrocytes has been hypothesized as vital to ongoing plasticity in the adult central nervous system. However, it has yet to be demonstrated directly that astrocytes are capable of gross morphological changes under non-pathological circumstances in the adult nervous system. In our studies, we have investigated this issue in the glial limitans associated with a well-known model of neuronal plasticity, the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus. The activity of the neuroendocrine cells comprising this region was stimulated in rats by substitution of 2% saline for drinking water for 2 or 9 days. The membrane bound enzyme methane monooxygenase (pMMO), is a mixed function oxygenase that initiates the oxidative metabolism of methane in methanotropic bacteria. Copper is required for catalytic activity of pMMO, illustrated by the recovery of pMMO activity in EDTA-inhibited membranes, whereas zinc and nickel had little effect or were inhibitory. Inhibition kinetics, cosubstrate dependence, and substrate protection experiments show that acetylene acts as a suicide substrate for pMMO, binding specifically to a 26-kDa peptide. The acetylene binding capability of pMMO increased as a function of copper concentration as does the specific activity, suggesting that copper activates pMMO by binding to …

Plant species that develop resistance to one herbicide (e.g., s-triazine) may simultaneously exhibit resistance to other herbicides to which they have never been exposed. The objectives of this study were to compare the response of atrazine resistant and susceptible biotypes of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) to the herbicides alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetamide), atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-{dollar}N\\sp\\prime{dollar}-(1-methyl-ethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2, 4-diamine), linuron ({dollar}N\\sp\\prime{dollar}-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-N-methoxy-N-methylurea), and metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5 (4H)-one). Five clay minerals (Well Crystallized Kaolinite (KWC), Poorly Crystallized Kaolinite (KPC), Illite, Attapulgite, and Montmorillonite) with a range of surface characteristics were selected to investigate the adsorption of three oxyanions (molybdate, selenite, and selenate). The minerals were coated with five different levels of each of Fe and Al hydrous oxides. The charge characteristics were determined using potentiometric titration. Adsorption was studied by batch experiment at 11 different concentrations of each of the oxyanions at three different pH levels.
