In Democracy's Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy, Michael Sandel looks about him and finds a vast and complex world governed by impersonal institutions and structures, in which discontented, anxious, and frustrated individuals are losing control over the forces that govern their lives, and in which the moral fabric of community is unraveling. His solution is to revitalize the civic strand of freedom found in republican politics and thus equip individuals to govern themselves. This study tested a multivariate model, which included peer influences, religiosity, personality traits, school experiences, and family characteristics, in predicting juvenile delinquency. The model compared two samples of youth belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S.). A mail questionnaire and three follow-up mailings were sent to 1,078 youth living in the Pacific Northwest and 1,849 youth living in Utah county. The overall response rate for the sample was 63 percent. Extensive measures were used in assessing the variables included in the model. In an attempt to incorporate basic visual attention abilities into existing artificial vision systems, a neural model of the bidirectional interactions within and between the brain regions believed to be involved in human visual attention has been developed. This model currently gives an artificial vision system the ability to attend to salient, or pop-out features and objects within the vision system''s field of view. After a review of the physiology of human visual attention, a network model of the aforementioned neural interactions is presented, followed by a demonstration of its performance.

This paper discusses a system of self-organizing maps that approximate the fuzzy membership function for an arbitrary number of fuzzy classes. This is done through the ordering and clustering properties of one-dimensional self-organizing maps and iterative approximation of conditional probabilities of nodes in one map being the winner given that a node in the other map is the winner. Application of this system reduces fuzzy membership design time to that required to train the system of self-organizing maps.

A survey of 250 captive (animal market) and free-flying (trapped at a sheep farm) pigeons was conducted to assess the prevalence of Trichomonas sp. in the domestic pigeon (Columba livia) population, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oropharyngeal swabs demonstrated that 52% of all pigeons were found with Trichomonas sp. in their oropharynx, of which 60%, 68% and 35% of pigeons were Trichomonas sp. positive in the AI Ain and Abu Dhabi animal markets and AI Ain sheep farm respectively. Captive birds had a significantly higher infection rate than the free-flying pigeons. Inspection of the oropharynx of live pigeons positive …

The possible toxic effect of crude oil and dispersant on the reproduction and performance of common marine fish in the United Arab Emirates coasts were investigated. Adult female and juvenile rabbitfish (Siganus canaliculatus) were exposed to different concentration of Sharjah light crude oil (0, 4, 6 ml crude oil/l) in the presence or absence of 0.3 mI/l Nalfleet dispersant (Maxi-Clean 2) dissolved in sea water. Juvenile fish were exposed to treatments for 3, 6, 9 or 15 days and adult female were treated for 18 days. Water Column Stratification And Mixing Events In Narragansett Bay During Winter And Spring, James Emery Andrews

We deployed a buoy in the West Passage of Narragansett Bay, approximately one km east of Hope Island, within a bathymetric depression of approximately twice the surrounding water depth. The buoy contained an onboard logging computer and had three YSI-600 instruments, each capable of measuring temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and pressure, logging at three different depths in the water column at a 20 minute sampling interval. The first deployment started on 6 January 1997 and lasted 18 days before problems required retrieving the buoy. Additionally, problems with the salinity sensors in this deployment made it impossible to use most …

The intent of this thesis is to explore connections between gender relations and the construction of a local discourse by which residents of late colonial Newport, Rhode Island, interpreted the coming American Revolution. Historians in recent years have documented a relationship between gender and the rhetoric of the Revolution and separately have linked the development of commercial economies to a desire for independence in the colonies. However, relatively unexplored are the possible connections between the nature of gender relations within the emergent economies and the appeal for independence.

Objective: To measure the effectiveness of a perinatal loss workshop on death anxiety of nursing students. Design: Simple, pretest-posttest. Setting: A classroom at a State University in California. Participants: 20 junior students in a baccalaureate nursing program in a maternal-child rotation. Intervention: A 60-minute perinatal loss workshop including Worden's tasks of mourning, therapeutic and non-therapeutic nursing interventions, photographs, poetry, and coping skills . Main Outcome Measure: Anxiety towards perinatal death was measured by Speilberger's State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI Form Y-1). Nine expeditions were conducted in the Bahamas from 1987 to 1995 for the purpose of collecting marine organisms for biomedical research. Collections concentrated on sponges from various deep water habitats: the fore reef slope and escarpment (30-60 m), the deep fore reef slope and escarpment (60-150 m), and the deep shelf slope (15-922 m). A total of 417 sites were sampled throughout the archipelago using the Johnson-Sea-Link and Clelia Research Submersibles, ROV, and scuba. In the first half of the work a novel microscopy method, Frequency-domain Field- confined Scanning Optical Microscopy (FFSOM), capable of a resolution below the classical diffraction limit, is introduced. An experimental verification in the case of fluorescence microscopy is also presented, suggesting the biological microscopy research as an important application field. The primary focus of this paper is the causes of divorce and their effects on elementary-age children. The adjustment problems of children of divorce in classrooms are examined. The importance of teachers' roles in easing the transition to school for children of divorce is emphasized. Teachers are assumed to be in a better position to observe the changes of children of divorce and to help them to adjust to their parents' divorce. This paper briefly reviews evidence on gender inequities in science education. It argues that making science instruction more effective is one way in which greater equity can be achieved. A line of research conducted in my laboratory dealing with conceptual change (CC) approaches to science instruction is discussed. CC instruction explicitly activates students’ pre-existing conceptions, leads students to be dissatisfied with less than adequate conceptions, and helps students construct more effective conceptions. Across several studies, CC instruction was found to be more effective than didactic instruction. CC features added to science text and science lessons facilitate learning for both males …

In this article, Professor Nicholas J. Johnson explores the parallels between the right of armed self-defense and the woman's right to abortion. Professor Johnson demonstrates that the theories and principles advanced to support the abortion right intersect substantially with an individual's right to armed self-defense. Professor Johnson uncovers common ground between the gun and abortion rights - two rights that have come to symbolize society's deepest social and cultural divisions - divisions that prompt many to embrace the abortion right while summarily rejecting the gun right. In the midst of current anti-immigration sentiment, which is motivating dramatic changes in the United States immigration laws, there exists the myth that prior immigration laws were more equitable and humanitarian. Yet historical analysis reveals that immigration law has been put to uses far from idyllic, and has always been concerned with the racial makeup of the nation. Specifically, national preoccupation with the maintenance of a "White country" is reflected in immigration law. The continued national preference for White immigrants is explicitly featured in the visa profiling codes of U.S. embassies and consulates. This Essay employs a race-conscious lens to …
