Immature Type II kerogen (HI= 660 mg/g) from the Lower Toarcian of the Paris Basin was separated into an alginite concentrate (HI = 952 mg/g) and an amorphous organic matter (AOM) concentrate (HI = 573 mg/g) by density centrifugation. The flash pyrolyzate of the alginite is characterized by high relative concentrations of several series of n-alkanones and n-alkenones (including mid-chain alkyl ketones), in addition to n-alkanes, n-alk-1-enes and n-alkadienes. To our knowledge, this Toarcian alginite is the oldest example of marine organic matter whose pyrolyzate contains mid-chain alkanones in such high relative concentrations. In sharp …

This report is the first study to provide national information regarding the incidence of child abuse or neglect in Indian communities. It also provides comprehensive assessments of the effectiveness of Indian Health Service (IHS) and tribal policies, procedures, and personnel in the recognition and treatment of child abuse and neglect. The report also designs an intervention program flexible enough to be used by American Indian and Alaska Native AI/AN communities across the country. Agronomy Notes

Systematic sampling of springs, tiles, and wells in Kentucky, as part of a recent statewide program to assess agricultural impacts on water quality, showed that NO₃ concentrations in these shallow ground water sources varied tremendously. The NO₃ concentration could be correlated with flow rate; higher when ground water recharge flushed NO₃ from soil in winter and spring, and lower or non detectable in summer and fall when less NO₃ leaching occurred. Depending on the season, NO₃ concentrations ranged from < 1 to > 10 ppm NO₃-N in almost half of the sites. For example, the water in …

Recycling of plant nutrients is of major concern in managing paddocks in pasturefields for intensive grazing. Redistribution of nutrients present in fecal and urine deposits is an important issue in growing climatically and seasonally-adapted forage species and for efficient conversion of herbage into animal products while adding to the sustainability of the system. Some of the questions that arise in managing soils for intensive grazing are discussed below.

A "genetic revolution" is upon us. Techniques for genetic testing have increased in sophistication, and an international effort to map and sequence human DNA—The Human Genome Project ("HGP")—is now well under way. We are beginning to exploit our new found genetic knowledge. Recognition of the relationship between developments in genetic science, law, and public policy, is creeping into the "literature" and into the law school curriculum. Even the popular 60 Minutes television "news magazine" recently did a program on the perils of genetic testing. Still, for lawyers and policymakers at least, the material is not all that accessible.

Fresh-Water Aquifer In The Knox Group (Cambrian–Ordovician) Of Central Kentucky, James A. Kipp

Fresh water can be found in Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate rocks of the Knox Group in central Kentucky. The top of the aquifer is as much as 300 ft above mean sea level (m.s.l.) on the crest of the Cincinnati Arch, but descends off the flanks of the arch. Water is normally found in the upper 100 to 250 ft of the Knox, primarily in secondary porosity apparently associated with the unconformity at the top of the unit. Knox wells commonly exceed 750 ft in total depth, but because the aquifer is artesian, water rises to an elevation of about …

Importance of light limitation, nutrient availability, and hydrology in controlling the abundance and composition of the phytoplankton community of Herrington Lake (KY) was investigated over a two-year period. Selected environmental parameters were measured every two weeks (April-October) at five sampling stations located along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir. In addition, short-term (48hr) nutrient enrichment experiments were conducted to assess the spatial and temporal variations in nutrient limitation. Phytoplankton growth responses to the combined addition of nitrogen (NO₃) and phosphorus (PO₄) were greater than those resulting from the addition of either nutrient alone. These results indicate …

Food preference and choice of oviposition (egg laying) site are critical factors for insects such as Drosophila and affect many aspects of their lives (Jennings and Seager, 1982). Different species of Drosophila fill various niches by making use of a variety of foods, which also affects their seasonal abundances (Shorrocks, 1983). The ability of Drosophila to find the location of a certain food type for egg laying and thus for their larvae affects the survival of their species. Breeding sites and substrates of the flies are chosen on the basis of the food available for the larvae of each species. …

A cDNA library from in vitro culture forms including metacyclic trypomastigote stages of Trypanosoma cruzi (Tulahuén) was prepared in a γgt 11 vector. The library was screened using serum from a rabbit immunized with irradiated metacyclic stages of T. cruzi to detect clones which produced β-galactosidase fusion proteins bearing epitopes recognized by the metacyclic-specific antiserum. Eleven recombinant bacteriophage clones were excised in vitro , yielding 11 bacterial clones containing recombinant phagemids. Recombinant antigens corresponding to native T. cruzi antigens of 48, 102, and 158 kDa were prepared in Escherichia coli . These recombinant antigens detected parasite specific antibodies in the …

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular green alga, grows photoautotrophically at very low concentrations of inorganic carbon due to the presence of an inducible CO2-concentrating mechanism. During the induction of the CO2-concentrating mechanism at low-CO2 growth conditions, at least five polypeptides that are either absent or present in low amounts in cells grown on high-CO2 concentrations are induced. One of these induced polypeptides with a molecular mass of 36 kD, LIP-36, has been localized to the chloroplast envelope. The protein was purified and the partial internal amino acid sequences were obtained through lys-C digestion. Two cDNAs encoding LIP-36 have been cloned using …

Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3) is the first imprinted gene detected in the proximal region of mouse chromosome 7. Because imprinting is a trait that is generally conserved among mammals, and imprinted domains generally encompass several adjacent genes, expression patterns and chromosomal environment of the human counterpart of Peg3 are of special interest. In this study we have localized human PEG3 ~ 2 Mb proximal of the telomere of chromosome 19q, within a region known to carry large numbers of tandemly clustered Kruppel-type zinc finger-containing (ZNF) genes. Boundary elements are thought to define the peripheries of chromatin domains and to restrict enhancer-promoter interactions to their target genes within their domains. We previously characterized a cDNA encoding the BEAF- 32A protein (32A), which hinds with high affinity to the scs' boundary element from the Drosophila melanogaster 87A7 hsp70 locus. Here, we report a second protein, BEAF-32B, that differs from 32A only in its amino terminus. Unlike 32A, it has the same DNA binding specificity as the complete BEAF activity affinity purified from Drosophila. We characterize three domains in these proteins.
