Tracking The Adc: Ranchers' Boon, Taxpayers' Burden, Wildlife's Bane, David Hoch, Will Carrington Heath

Animal Law Review

Approximately thirty five million dollars are spent each year by the Animal Damage Control division of the US Department of Agriculture to destroy predator animals that supposedly kill livestock. The methods by which the ADC kills these "predators" are appalling. Mr. Hoch argues that the funding for this program is excessive, irresponsible, and raises serious ethical questions. He concludes that ADC activities should be terminated immediately.

Problem. Only a few attempts have been made thus far to explore the situation of Christian divorced men and women in a scholarly manner. The basic question for this research was to find out what social factors, religious factors, and coping strategies are related to the divorce adjustment of divorced Christians who are members of predominately conservative Protestant denominations and how well these Christians adjust to divorce.

Problem. Much more is known about determinants of marital satisfaction in first marriages than remarriages. Although the stepfamily is a dominant and unique family type, it lacks its own theoretical framework from which to investigate factors that contribute to marital satisfaction and stepfamily success.

Method. This study evaluated marital satisfaction in stepfamilies in light of the contextual, problem-solving, and investment models of relationship satisfaction. Problem. Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools recruit students through a severe entrance examination. However, after 9 months of schooling, more than 20% fail without possibility of repeating the grade or pursuing studies in less academically challenging schools. They are pushed out without means of coping with real life. This situation has multiple negative impacts on families who sell all their belongings in order to send their children to school where they can be prepared for a better life. Physical contacts between cells are known to influence a broad range of biological activities. Investigations into the regulation of prolactin gene expression have shown that cell behavior within the pituitary may also be affected by adhesive contacts. To better understand the mechanisms that regulate cell-cell adhesive contacts in these endocrine cells, we developed a procedure that quantitatively assays homotypic aggregation in the rat pituitary tumor cell line, 235-1. We observed that treatment of 235-1 cells with dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, not only reduces prolactin production but also decreases the reformation of cell-cell contacts. The northern jarrah forest relies on efficient nutrient cycling for its growth and long term sustainability. The decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients in such ecosystems are facilitated through the interaction of microflora with a myriad of invertebrates. The recolonisation of invertebrate fauna to rehabilitated bauxite mines is thus of critical importance to the long-term success of rehabilitation. This Comment presents background information concerning genetic information and genetic testing. Section III then argues that privacy and autonomy are significant policy issues in connection with genetic information. As a result, the decision to have genetic testing performed should be an individual's choice, and genetic testing should never be compelled. Section IV argues that the failure to give genetic information special protection in the law has potentially harmful consequences. Section V surveys current efforts to protect genetic privacy, both by the federal government and states other than Washington. This article examines the history of unwed fathers’ rights in adoption as set forth by the United States Supreme Court and the Nebraska Supreme Court. It also identifies and discusses the changes L.B. 712 made in Nebraska law and how those changes improved the validity of Nebraska adoptions. Finally, this article analyzes United States Supreme Court and Nebraska Supreme Court decisions reached after L.B. 712 went into effect in September 1995. This Comment examines the efforts of gays and lesbians to obtain marital rights and the resistance these efforts have encountered. An examination of the law demonstrates that prohibitions on same-gender marriages are unconstitutional at both the federal and state level, particularly with regard to the principle of equal protection. Part II of this Comment begins with a discussion of the interests that marriage serves for the individual citizen and society in general. The empirical orthogonal function decomposition is used to analyze time records of AVHRR sea surface temperature observations of the western North Atlantic from 32.9° to 43.6°N, 62.7° to 76.3°W. A manually declouded dataset covering the spring of 1985 is analyzed. The majority (80%) of the variance about the mean is accounted for by an empirical eigenfunction, which is identified with seasonal warming. This eigenfunction shows that the shelf water, excluding Georges Bank, warms the most rapidly; the surface water of the Gulf of Maine warms a little less rapidly and the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea surface water warm the …

An index of biological sensitivity to changes in freshwater inflow was developed for 44 species in 22 Gulf of Mexico estuaries for adult and juvenile life stages of fishes and macroinvertebrates. The BioSalinity Index (BSI) provides an innovative approach to quantify estuary-specific sensitivity of organisms to changes in estuarine salinity regimes based upon our knowledge of species salinity habitat preferences, the availability of this preferred habitat, and the relative abundance and distribution of species in time and space. We found that a significant difference exists between adult and juvenile life stage sensitivity, with juveniles exhibiting a lower sensitivity to salinity …

Benthic crustaceans were collected monthly between 24 August 1985 and 20 September 1986 from tidal freshwater (TFW), oligohaline (OH) and mesohaline (MH) sites in Old Fort Bayou, a black-water tidal river of the Biloxi Bay estuary, Mississippi. Salinity varied seasonally and spatially and was primarily related to variations in rainfall during this study. Reduced rainfall after October 1985 resulted in the upstream movement of saline water and a concommitant shift in benthic crustaceans upstream with this change in the physical-chemical environment. This shift is supported by a significant positive concordance of ranks between salinity and relative abundance of Gammarus sp. …

Similar to minority groups, women often possess inferiority feelings about themselves and have difficulty developing a positive view of womanhood. Womanist Identity Development is the stage-wise process by which women develop womanist attitudes, forming a positive gender identity. The stages are associated with specific attitudes about womanhood, including external negative definitions (i.e. societal stereotypes) and positive internal definitions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not womanist identity attitudes vary according to age and whether or not attitudes are related to views of women's roles and life experiences. This essay explores the process of teaching students—and ourselves—to listen to and accept different versions of reality. Such exploration results in a proposition that is easy to state but difficult to accomplish: that in order to achieve this goal, we must challenge the students' "common sense”—their sense that they "know" how people act—by offering examples of behaviors that differ from that knowledge, without triggering the very "common sense" we are trying to combat. Toward this end, the first section of the essay presents a hypothetical initial interview with a client, and the student interviewer's reactions to her, which reflect the …
