Incest and childhood sexual abuse have been and continue to be a problem in our society. However, Today a relatively new phenomena involving repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse plagues our society. Women, and some men, between the ages of 25 to 40 who have sought therapy for relatively common problems such as marital difficulties, work related problems, eating disorders or simple depression: without ever having any memories of being sexually abused as a child, have come to believe while in therapy that they were the victims of repeated childhood sexual abuse. Growth Rates Of Planktonic And Newly Settled American Lobsters Homarusamericanus, Mary-Jane James-Pirri, J. Stanley Cobb

Growth rates, as estimated by the RNA:DNA ratio, were determined for planktonic postlarvae and for recaptured and wild newly settled benthic stages (fifth and sixth instars) of the American lobster Homarus americanus. The mean growth rate of planktonic postlarvae in 1994 was 0.522 ± 0.247 mg protein d^-1. This was significantly higher than planktonic growth rates observed in 1991 (0.449 ± 0.121 mg protein d^-1) but not in 1992 (0.460 ± 0.144 mg protein d^-1). The percentage of poorly nourished planktonic postlarvae, those with growth rates <0.220 mg protein d^-1, ranged from 3 to 13% …

At its most literal, it is an anthology of reviews familiarizing the reader with some of the authors, topics, and titles that have composed the sustainable agriculture literature over the last decade or more. I analyze the connection of affirmative action to two models of race and racism. I contend that the Supreme Court Justices who continue to support affirmative action adhere to a "prejudice" model in which race is a concept to be overcome and racism is merely a condition of individual ignorance. 13 On the other hand, I posit that Professor Butler's proposals fall within a "white supremacy" model, which looks at race as a historically contingent concept that has been used to subordinate non-white peoples from precolonial times through the present. Information on reactions of delphinids to biopsy sampling and healing of associated biopsy wounds is limited. Results presented here report on the behavioral responses of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to remote biopsy sampling procedures, and provide information on stages of surgical biopsy wound repair. Biopsy samples of free-ranging dolphins were collected between February–May 1992 in Galveston Bay, Texas, using a sterilized corer-tipped bolt, launched from a crossbow. A total of 8 direct ‘hits’ were documented, 4 hits (50%) in which a tissue sample was obtained, 2 hits (25%) from which no sample was retrieved, and 2 hits …

The abundance of the only population of vaquitas, Gulf of California harbor porpoise (Phocoena sinus), is estimated from four surveys conducted in Mexico between 1986 and 1993, using a variety of methods. A line-transect approach was applied, using some parameters estimated from a related species, the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Vaquita abundance is estimated as 503 (CV = 0.63) from 1986-1988 boat surveys, 885 (CV = 0.50) from 1988-- 1989 aerial surveys, 572 (CV = 1.43) from a 1991 aerial survey, and 224 (CV = 0.39) from a 1993 ship survey. A boat survey was conducted from 5 to 26 June 1993 to estimate the abundance of the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) along ca. 120 km of the Amazon River bordering Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. Two survey methods were used: line transects during 5 d and strip transects during 15 d. The line transects were used to estimate the abundance of both species in the main channels of the Amazon at distances greater than 200 m from river banks and islands, and strip transects were used to estimate abundance in the …

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae SCS7 and SUR2 genes are members of a gene family that encodes enzymes that desaturate or hydroxylate lipids. Sur2p is required for the hydroxylation of C-4 of the sphingoid moiety of ceramide, and Scs7p is required for the hydroxylation of the very long chain fatty acid. Neither SCS7 nor SUR2 are essential for growth, and lack of the Scs7p- or Sur2p- dependent hydroxylation does not prevent the synthesis of mannosyldiinositolphosphorylceramide, the mature sphingolipid found in yeast. Deletion of either gene suppresses the Ca²⁺-sensitive phenotype of csg2Δ mutants, which arises from overaccumulation of inositolphosphorylceramide due to …

The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is widespread in North America, but is not very abundant throughout its range (Greij 1994, Common Moorhen, Pages 145-157 in Tacha and Braun [eds.] Migratory Shore and Upland Game Bird Management in North America, Allen Press, Lawrence). In North Dakota its status is accidental (Konrad 1983, Prairie Nat. 15:144); in South Dakota it is considered a casual visitor and a probable breeding species (South Dakota Ornithologists' Union 1991, The Birds of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen; Peterson 1995, The Breeding Bird Atlas of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen).

A Land-Use And Water-Quality History Of White Rock Lake Reservoir, Dallas, Texas, Based On Paleolimnological Analyses, J. Platt Bradbury, Peter C. Van Metre

White Rock Lake reservoir in Dallas, Texas contains a 150-cm sediment record of silty clay that documents land-use changes since its construction in 1912. Pollen analysis corroborates historical evidence that between 1912 and 1950 the watershed was primarily agricultural. Land disturbance by plowing coupled with strong and variable spring precipitation caused large amounts of sediment to enter the lake during this period. Diatoms were not preserved at this time probably because of low productivity compared to diatom dissolution by warm, alkaline water prior to burial in the sediments. After 1956, the watershed became progressively urbanized. Erosion decreased, land stabilized, and …

It is the need for students to learn to write in the context of their field of study; in this case science. Although numerous "how to" writing books have been published, few, if any, address the central pedagogical issues underlying the process of learning to think and write scientifically. We assessed geographic and nongeographic variation among populations of the southern bog lemming (Synaptomys cooperi) in Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota based on morphological data. Univariate and multivariate analyses of 15 cranial characters revealed no consistent sexual dimorphism. Geographic variation in cranial morphology of adults varied clinally, with individuals increasing in size from north to south and east to west. The largest individuals overall were from southwestern Kansas (S. c. paludis) and southwestern Nebraska (S. c. relictus), and the smallest individuals were from populations in eastern Illinois (S. c. gossii). Since 1981, every state bordering the Gulf of Mexico has introduced some form of restrictions on the use of gillnets in nearshore waters.' Many recreational fishermen and conservationists have argued that gillnets severely deplete fish stocks and indiscriminately kill marine life Seeking to conserve natural resources, conservationists have mounted campaigns aimed at restricting or banning the commercial use of gillnets. In response, commercial fishermen claim that conservationists' arguments simply cloud the real issue-resource allocation. Commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico maintain that fish stocks such as mullet, red drum, and sea trout are healthy,6 and that the nets are …

In posing the question "Where are the pickers?", Love and Jones suggest that the shifting paradigm in forestry is real and that academia is not leading the shift. Love and Jones illustrate the emergence of special forest products' legitimacy in competing uses of forests with their experience and research in mushroom harvesting in the Pacific Northwest.
