Status Attainment Among Children Of Single Mothers: The Roles Of Parenting And Economics, Sarah Barfels Jan 1997

Status Attainment Among Children Of Single Mothers: The Roles Of Parenting And Economics, Sarah Barfels

Honors Papers

My analysis adds to the literature on single motherhood by trying to refine a structural equations model to use to examine the causal importance and relationships between economics and parenting in single mother families and the effect on intergenerational attainment. This work also utilizes the relatively new longitudinal data from the second wave of the National Survey of Families and Households which includes more comprehensive (measuring participation in school activities and adding indexes to previously single indicator concepts) measures of parenting practices (Thomson, Hanson, and McLahanan 1994; Astone and McLanahan 1991). Further, the role of these and economic factors are …

Mother Ireland: Women, The State And The Abortion Referendum In The Republic Of Ireland, Jennifer K. Dewan Jan 1997

Mother Ireland: Women, The State And The Abortion Referendum In The Republic Of Ireland, Jennifer K. Dewan

Honors Papers

In this paper, I examine the relationship between women and the Irish state, particularly how the nationalist state has defined and controlled women through their reproductive capabilities. I outline the factors that have contributed to the construction of women's identity and how women have resisted the limitations of this construction in a variety of ways. The issue of abortion is an excellent point on which to base the discussion of women in Ireland because of it extraordinary impact on Irish society. To outline the methodology of this examination, this thesis is theoretically grounded in feminist anthropology, in which the category …

The Ethics Of Judicial Decision-Making Regarding Custody Of Minor Children: Looking At The Best Interests Of The Child" And The "Primary Caretaker" Standards As Utility Rules, Kathryn Mercer Jan 1997

The Ethics Of Judicial Decision-Making Regarding Custody Of Minor Children: Looking At The Best Interests Of The Child" And The "Primary Caretaker" Standards As Utility Rules, Kathryn Mercer

Faculty Publications

This article will examine how a judge's ethical framework can influence the outcome of a custody award, even where the same "child-centered" standard is ostensibly being used. This article uses three cases from the Supreme Court of Nebraska to demonstrate that the "best interests of the child" standard can be used: 1) to award a parent custody because parents have near absolute rights (an example of rule deontology); 2) to deny a parent custody because the par ent is unfit (an example of rule utilitarianism); or 3) to deny a parent custody because the child's life needs stability (an example …

Wetland Resources Of Eastern South Dakota, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins Jan 1997

Wetland Resources Of Eastern South Dakota, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins

Natural Resource Management Faculty Books

The mere mention of the word "wetland" in coffee shops and other gathering places on the prairies today brings out emotions and opinions that run the gamut from saving them all to draining them all. To some people, what we do with wetlands has been, and still is, a personal choice, a matter of exercising individual rights on private property. To others, wetlands are community resources that provide values that touch all of society. They contend that what is done to and about wetlands is a community decision regardless of ownership. Herein lies the controversy we have experienced over wetlands …

Creating A Government That Works Better And Costs Less: A Historical Analysis Of Civil Service Reform, James William Thomas

Theses Digitization Project

What this project endeavors to do is to take the complex issue of twenty-first century governmental administration and, through historic analysis using some of the classical and renowed literature of the past, paint a broad brush picture of where we are today, how we got here, and where we are going. This study includes an examination of the dominant ideologies of past reform eras.
