Detecting Fire And Grazing Patterns In Tallgrass Prairie Using Spectral Mixture Analysis, Carol A. Wessman, C Ann Bateson, Tracy Benning

Environmental Science

Global grasslands are typically under management practices (such as fire and grazing) that alter nutrient cycling, ecosystem composition, and distribution of organic matter from the unmanaged condition. We evaluated landscape-level response to fire and grazing treatments in the Konza Tallgrass Prairie Research Natural Area, Kansas, using spectral mixture analysis of Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data acquired 31 August 1990. Spectral mixture analysis derives the fractional abundances of spectrally unique components in the landscape. The reflectance spectra of these components are called endmembers. Endmember fractions values were compared against ground values of live biomass, current standing dead biomass, and litter …

Haemophilus influenzae is an important human pathogen. The lipooligosaccharide (LOS) of H. influenzae has been implicated as a virulence determinant. To better understand the assembly of LOS in nontypeable H. influenzae (NtHi), we have cloned and characterized the rfaD and rfaF genes of NtHi 2019, which encode the ADP-L-glycero-D-manno-heptose-6-epimerase and heptosyltransferase II enzymes, respectively. This cloning was accomplished by the complementation of Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis gene mutants. These deep rough mutants are novobiocin susceptible until complemented with the appropriate gene. In this manner, we are able to use novobiocin resistance to select for specific NtHi LOS inner core …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

To define the role of the surface lipooligosaccharide (LOS) of Haemophilus ducreyi in the pathogenesis of chancroid, Tn916 mutants of H. ducreyi 35000 defective in expression of the murine monoclonal antibody (MAb) 3F11 epitope on H. ducreyi LOS were identified by immunologic screening. One mutant, designated 1381, has an LOS which lacks the MAb 3F11 epitope and migrates with an increased mobility on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The gene disrupted by the Tn916 element in strain 1381 was identified by cloning the sequences flanking the Tn916 element. The sequences were then used to probe a lambda DASHII genomic library. …

It is commonly assumed that biophysically based soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer (SVAT) models are scale-invariant with respect to the initial boundary conditions of topography, vegetation condition and soil moisture. In practice, SV AT models that have been developed and tested at the local scale (a few meters or a few tens of meters) are applied almost unmodified within general circulation models (GCMs) of the atmosphere, which have grid areas of 50-500 kIn2• This study, which draws much of its substantive material from the papers of Sellers et al. Ecological Water Treatment System For Removal Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen From Polluted Water, Ray W. Drenner, Donald J. Day, Stacy J. Basham, J. Durward Smith, Susan I. Jensen Jan 1997

Ecological Water Treatment System For Removal Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen From Polluted Water, Ray W. Drenner, Donald J. Day, Stacy J. Basham, J. Durward Smith, Susan I. Jensen

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We propose that phosphorus and nitrogen can be removed from polluted water using an ecological water treatment system consisting of periphyton and fish. In the proposed system, polluted water flows through a series of vessels, and the nutrients are taken up by periphyton growing on porous screens. Algal-grazing fish feed on the periphyton and either assimilate or egest the nutrients in mucus-bound feces that settle from the water into a sediment trap. Both the fish and their feces can be harvested as nutrient sinks. In this study we examined the effects of an algal-grazing cichlid (Tilapia mossambica) and …

Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase: Comparison Of The Enzyme From Mammalian And Bacterial Sources, Christal A. Sheppard, James S. Sumner, Phillipe Goyette, Phyllis Frosst, Rima Rozen, Rowena G. Matthews Jan 1997

Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase: Comparison Of The Enzyme From Mammalian And Bacterial Sources, Christal A. Sheppard, James S. Sumner, Phillipe Goyette, Phyllis Frosst, Rima Rozen, Rowena G. Matthews

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase catalyzes the reduction of methylenetetrahydrofolate to methyltetrahydrofolate, which serves as the methyl donor for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine in the reaction catalyzed by methionine synthase. Recent studies have provided evidence for association of a common polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase with elevated levels of blood homocysteine, a metabolite correlated with increased cardiovascular risk in humans. In this chapter, we review earlier studies on the properties of the mammalian enzyme, interpreting these observations in the light of the deduced amino acid sequence for the human enzyme. The catalytic portion of the human enzyme shows significant sequence homologies with …

Wigstock And The Kulturkampf: Supreme Court Storytelling, The Culture War, And Romer V. Evans, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

It bears repeating that the Supreme Court's decision in Romer is of trivial doctrinal import. The Court did not recognize homosexuals as a suspect or quasi-suspect class, nor did it reverse or undermine its landmark decision in Bowers v. Hardwick. Moreover, the narrow holding of Romer suggests quite strongly that typical laws disadvantaging homosexuals--the military exclusion, the heterosexual paradigm of civil marriage, and perhaps even better-crafted and more narrow versions of Amendment 2--do not offend the Equal Protection Clause. These laws rationally advance legitimate government interests and should easily pass scrutiny under the rational basis test applied by the …

A Study In Frustration: Analysis Of Human Remains Removed From The Coker Mound Site (41cs1), Sharon Mccormick Derrick

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Human skeletal remains were removed from the Coker Mound site (41CS1) by unidentified excavators sometime immediately prior to the Texas Archeological Society (TAS) meetings of 1995. Mike Turner, a Steward in the Office of the State Archeologists' Texas Archeological Steward Network and a founding member of the Friends of Northeast Texas Archaeology, was able to retrieve a cranium, mandible; and six cervical vertebrae from this collection for a brief period, bringing them to the TAS meetings. It was his dedication that provided the opportunity for these remains to be studied.

Archaeological Testing At Crook's Park In San Marcos, Hays County, Texas, Diane A. Cargill, Maureen Brown

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological testing at site 41HY261 was conducted from March 26-31, 1997, by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio, for the city of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department. Testing demonstrates that 41HY261 contains deep, intact, stratified subsurface cultural deposits. Collectively, the artifacts recovered to date represent ca. 5,000 years of hunter-and-gatherer activity. Site 41HY261 has the potential to contribute significantly to the prehistory of the region, and is therefore recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Significance Testing At Preshistoric Archeological Site 41rk195, Rusk County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode, Sterling Hays, Paul Maslyk, Christine G. Ward, Jesus Gonzalez

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In May 1994, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) conducted extensive test excavations at archeological site 41RK195. Located in the path of proposed Loop 571 around Henderson, the site had already been seriously impacted by a sand quarrying operation. Lying atop a large hill near the confluence of Bromley Creek and Flanigan Branch, site 41RK195, now almost totally destroyed, is believed to have been a major site of the region. The small number of artifacts found, in addition to a few seen in private collections, indicates a long history of human habitation for this multicomponent site, including occupation of the …

Test Excavations At Prehistoric Site 41sm203, Smith County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41SM203 is a prehistoric campsite situated along the southwestern outskirts of the city of Tyler, Smith County, Texas. The site occupies the apex and lower slopes of a north-south trending ridge that runs for several miles. The lower part of the site lies relatively near springs located along the headwaters of Butler Creek. These springs or similar ones are thought to have been a major attraction of this locale, but significant cultural deposits were not found near them or in any part of the site subject to the investigation. The cultural materials that were found indicate sporadic and nonintensive …

The Steady Flow Between Reservoirs With Different Density And Level Through A Contraction, A. Odulo, J. C. Swanson, D. Mendelsohn Jan 1997

The Steady Flow Between Reservoirs With Different Density And Level Through A Contraction, A. Odulo, J. C. Swanson, D. Mendelsohn

Journal of Marine Research

This paper presents a complete analytical solution of steady gravity flow between two reservoirs connected by a channel of slowly varying breadth and containing fluids of different densities and levels. The hydrostatic approximation is used and dissipation is neglected. It is shown that seven different regimes are possible depending on the value of the parameter δ = γ/ε, which is the ratio of relative lighter and denser reservoir level difference, γ, to positive relative density difference, ε. The exact solution of the problem is obtained for all these regimes. If the level of the heavier fluid reservoir is higher than …

Large-Scale Processes In The Upper Layers Of The Indian Ocean Inferred From Temperature Climatology, A. S. Unnikrishnan, S. Prasanna Kumar, G. S. Navelkar Jan 1997

Large-Scale Processes In The Upper Layers Of The Indian Ocean Inferred From Temperature Climatology, A. S. Unnikrishnan, S. Prasanna Kumar, G. S. Navelkar

Journal of Marine Research

Determination of amplitudes and phases for the annual and semi-annual cycle of the temperature in the Indian Ocean north of 20S from Levitus temperature climatology (1982) gives maximum amplitudes of the seasonal cycle at 100 m with the dominance of semi-annual cycle in the equatorial region and annual cycle elsewhere in the domain. The Bay of Bengal shows characteristics of the westward-propagating Rossby waves of annual period, while the Arabian Sea shows the dominance of Ekman pumping in the central region and westward-propagating features in the eastern region. Qualitative evidences obtained from the distribution of depth of 20°C isotherm and …

Eigenanalysis Of The Two-Dimensional Wind-Driven Ocean Circulation Problem, V. A. Sheremet, G. R. Ierley, V. M. Kamenkovich Jan 1997

Eigenanalysis Of The Two-Dimensional Wind-Driven Ocean Circulation Problem, V. A. Sheremet, G. R. Ierley, V. M. Kamenkovich

Journal of Marine Research

A barotropic model of the wind-driven circulation in the subtropical region of the ocean is considered. A no-slip condition is specified at the coasts and slip at the fluid boundaries. Solutions are governed by two parameters: inertial boundary-layer width; and viscous boundary-layer width. Numerical computations indicate the existence of a wedge-shaped region in this two-dimensional parameter space, where three steady solutions coexist. The structure of the steady solution can be of three types: boundary-layer, recirculation and basin-filling-gyre. Compared to the case with slip conditions (Ierley and Sheremet, 1995) in the no-slip case the wedge-shaped region is displaced to higher Reynolds …

Eddy Formation On A Continental Slope, Janet M. Becker, Rick Salmon Jan 1997

Eddy Formation On A Continental Slope, Janet M. Becker, Rick Salmon

Journal of Marine Research

We consider a uniform-density ocean in which the depth-independent horizontal velocity is driven by a two-gyre wind. Numerical solutions of the governing vorticity equation reveal that the solutions with a flat ocean bottom differ greatly from those in which a continental shelf and slope are present along the western boundary. In the ocean basin with a western continental shelf, steady inertial circulations readily lose stability to unsteady inertial circulations that spawn eddies. However, eddies do not form in the corresponding solutions for the flat-bottom ocean. Reducing the friction leads to flat-bottom solutions that shed eddies far offshore, but still differ …

Mechanisms Of Infaunal Polychaete Dispersal And Colonization In An Intertidal Sandflat, David H. Shull Jan 1997

Mechanisms Of Infaunal Polychaete Dispersal And Colonization In An Intertidal Sandflat, David H. Shull

Journal of Marine Research

Changes in benthic infaunal population densities following disturbance may be influenced by colonization mechanisms. Accordingly, this study experimentally examined the relative importance of four colonization mechanisms for seven numerically dominant polychaete species in an intertidal estuarine sandflat in Connecticut, USA. The colonization mechanism an organism used depended upon species characteristics including larval developmental mode and depth distribution within the sediment. A spionid polychaete with planktonic larval development, Polydora cornuta, colonized experimental disturbance treatments primarily by larval settlement. A surface-dwelling syllid polychaete with nonplanktonic development, Streptosyllis arenae, colonized mainly by bedload transport. Two syllid polychaetes developmentally and morphologically similar …

Analysis Of The Mean Annual Cycle Of The Dissolved Oxygen Anomaly In The World Ocean, Raymond G. Najjar, Ralph F. Keeling Jan 1997

Analysis Of The Mean Annual Cycle Of The Dissolved Oxygen Anomaly In The World Ocean, Raymond G. Najjar, Ralph F. Keeling

Journal of Marine Research

A global climatology of the dissolved oxygen anomaly (the excess over saturation) is created with monthly resolution in the upper 500 m of the ocean. The climatology is based on dissolved oxygen, temperature and salinity data archived at the National Oceanographic Data Center. Examination of this climatology reveals statistically significant annual cycles throughout the upper 500 m of the World Ocean, though seasonal variations are most coherent in the North Atlantic, where data density is greatest. Vertical trends in the phase and amplitude of the annual cycle are noted. The cycle in surface waters is characterized by a summer maximum …

Phytoplankton Patches At Fronts: A Model Of Formation And Response To Wind Events, Peter J. S. Franks, Leonard J. Walstad Jan 1997

Phytoplankton Patches At Fronts: A Model Of Formation And Response To Wind Events, Peter J. S. Franks, Leonard J. Walstad

Journal of Marine Research

A subsurface patch of chlorophyll is a feature common to many fronts. The dynamics underlying the patch formation are not well understood; however, there appears to be a strong link between the biological and physical dynamics. Here we test the hypothesis that patch formation is a result of wind-forced motions of the front. Frontal responses to transient wind events include acceleration of the surface layers, changes in mixed-layer depth, and excitation of nonlinear oscillations at the front. Such dynamics can affect nutrient fluxes across the pycnocline and the coupling between trophic levels. To test this hypothesis, we developed a two-dimensional …

Current Structure In The Rhine Region Of Freshwater Influence, A. J. Souza, J. H. Simpson, F. Schirmer Jan 1997

Current Structure In The Rhine Region Of Freshwater Influence, A. J. Souza, J. H. Simpson, F. Schirmer

Journal of Marine Research

Observation with HF radar, ADCPs and conventional current meters in the Rhine ROFI system in the North Sea indicate that the dominant currents are due to tidal flow, with important contributions from winds and density-driven circulation. The tidal currents are dominated by the semidiurnal components, principally the M2, with tidal ellipses parallel to the coast and a semimajor axis of the order of 1 m s−1 at the surface. The wind-driven flow varies between 1 and 3% of the wind speed and the rotation varies with depth in qualitative agreement with Ekman theory. After removal of the tidal and …
