The scientific relationship between 10,000 meter performance and training methods of distance runners remains incompletely understood. Researchers such as Slovic (1977) and Pollock (1978) have attempted to study the relationship between training practices of distance runners with the use of surveys. However, these studies did not analyze the significance of various types of training regimens available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the training methods of NCAA Division I runners and 10,000 meter performance. Acid Mine Drainage And Its Effects On Salamander Assemblages In Cumberland Plateau Streams Of The North Chickamauga Creek Watershed, Tennessee, Melissa Combs

In Appalachia's coal mining regions, acid mine drainage (AMD) has contributed to the widespread degradation of stream ecosystems. Salamanders are common inhabitants of healthy headwater streams and because of their permeable skins are excellent indicators of ecosystem intergrity. Hence, we investigated the potential effects of AMD on the species richness and relative abundance of aquatic salamanders in selected stream reaches (sites) of the North Chickamauga Creek (NCC) system, Tennessee. Specimens were collected by kick-net sampling with a 500um mesh dip net and/or electroshocking at four AMD-impacted sites (pH< 5.6) and two reference sites pH> 6.2), May-July 1996. The two primary problems with providing health care in the United States are cost and access., The cost of health care rose dramatically during the 1970s and 1980s and continues to increase, making coset containment crucial to the availability of care. In addition, many Americans are either entirely without health insurance or are underinsured for catastrophic illness. While individually these two issues are important, equally problematic is the tension that exists between them. Providing greater access to additional services results either in a cost increase or the loss of other services. Ultimately, however, a general plan to contain costs can …

This study examined the correlation between infertility and marital satisfaction. Thirty-six subject participated in the study. The participants were recruited from a support group. Other recruits came from friends. The survey was sent, completed, and returned by mail as to retain anonymity. The subjects came from St. Louis, MO. Most of the individuals in the study were white, Non-Hispanic, middle class, and college graduates. Each individual completed a demographic questionnaire and the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale. The compiled results found that there is a significant relationship between gender and marital satisfaction in a group of individuals with fertility problems. Another …

The Influence Of Low Dietary Fat Intake On Incidence And Severity Of Migraine Headache, Zuzana Bic

Migraine headaches are a common and debilitating syndrome causing untold suffering and loss of productivity. A review of the literature indicates that there are two primary factors involved in triggering these headaches: high levels of blood lipids and high levels of free fatty acids. Under these conditions platelet aggregability is increased, which is associated with decreases in serotonin and heightened prostaglandins levels. These conditions may produce vasodilation, the most immediate precursor to migraine headache. A high fat diet is one factor that may directly affect this process. Y-Chromosome Effects On Drosophila Geotaxis Interact With Genetic Or Cytoplasmic Background, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch

Previously, all of the major fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, chromosomes (I, II, and III) have been shown to be associated with geotaxis, but the Y chromosome has not. Using two methods (back-crossing and chromosome substitution), Y chromosomes from lines that have evolved stable, extreme expressions of geotaxis were placed into different genetic and cytoplasmic backgrounds to test the resulting males for geotaxis. The results of the back-crossing do not support the interpretation of Y-chromosome effects on geotaxis. These tests do not have sufficient statistical power, however, to detect small genetic effects. SecA, a 102-kDa hydrophilic protein, couples the energy of ATP binding to the translocation of preprotein across the bacterial inner membrane. SecA function and topology were studied with metabolically labeled [35S]SecA and with inner membrane vesicles from cells that overex- pressed SecYEGDFyajC, the integral domain of preprotein translocase. During translocation in the presence of ATP and preprotein, a 65-kDa N-terminal domain of SecA is protected from proteolytic digestion through insertion into the mem- brane, as previously reported for a 30-kDa C-terminal domain [Economou, A. & Wickner, W. (1994) Cell 78, 835–843]. Insertion of both domains occurs at saturable SecYEGDFyajC sites …

In 1995, Boulder City bought from the federal government 167 square miles of land in the Eldorado Valley which is located approximately seven miles west of the city. Soon afterward, the current landfill in Boulder City began accepting construction waste from Las Vegas. The large dump trucks had to travel through Boulder City on route to the landfill. In doing this they passed through three school zones and residential areas. When residents began complaining about the trucks, the Boulder City City Council began investigating various ways to solve the problem. The solution they adopted was to construct a new landfill …

This thesis develops the theory and tools necessary for the determination of a near optimal Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) scheduling policy for an arbitrary multitasking problem specification. The solution is determined using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). All real-time operating systems provide some means of 'tuning' the characteristics of the scheduling policy to accurately meet the application requirements. This thesis shows the applicability of using a GA to determine these parameters for an arbitrary application. In addition, the RTOS parameters considered are broad enough to allow the results to be used for specifying and/or choosing an RTOS for the actual implementation …

Ichthyofaunal And Habitat Associations Of Distinct Populations Of Southern Redbelly Dace, Phoxinus Erythrogaster (Teliostei: Cyprinidae) In Mississippi, Martin O'Connell

Twenty-two field sites in W-central Mississippi were surveyed for southern red- belly dace Phoxinus erythrogaster to characterize habitat and ichthyofaunal associations of these 'endangered' disjunct populations. Phoxinus erythrogaster occurred at only six sites. Data assessed similarity among all sites and described microhabitat associations of P erythro- gaster. Five species, including Semotilus atromaculatus, Campostoma anomalum, Etheostoma whipplei, P erythrogaster and Pimephales notatus, comprised 95% of the total number of in- dividuals collected at P erythrogaster sites. Standardized abundance (number per seine haul) for S. atromaculatus was consistently high among all P erythrogaster sites, whereas standard- ized abundance for C. anomalum, P …

Sticky traps were used to measure how tree shelterbelts influence the abundance of crop insect pests and beneficial arthropods in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) plots in eastern Nebraska. Abundance of striped cucumber beetles {Acalymma vittatum Fabricius (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)} , southern corn rootworms {Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)}, and northern corn rootworms {D. barberi Smith & Lawrence (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)} was similar in exposed and sheltered plots. Western corn rootworms {D. virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)} were significantly more abundant in exposed plots. More lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and ichneumonid wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) were caught on traps …

The bacteriophage T4 denV gene encodes a well-characterized DNA repair enzyme involved in pyrimidine photodimer excision. We have discovered the first homologs of the denV gene in chlorella viruses, which are common in fresh water. This gene functions in vivo and also when cloned in Escherichia coli. Photo-damaged virus DNA can also be photoreactivated by the host chlorella. Since the chlorella viruses are continually exposed to solar radiation in their native environments, two separate DNA repair systems, one that functions in the dark and one that functions in the light, significantly enhance their survival.

Carrion Seeking In Brown Tree Snakes: Importance Of Olfactory And Visual Cues, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark

We performed field experiments to examine brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) attraction to carrion. These snakes were attracted to carrion and entered traps baited with dead mice as readily as traps baited with live mice. Using the cues arising from both live and dead prey, we examined the relative importance of visual and chemical cues to brown tree snakes. With carrion lures, chemical cues alone were sufficient for attracting and capturing snakes, but with live prey lures visual cues were required to attract and capture brown tree snakes. Members of the suborder Eimeriina (phylum Apicomplexa: class Sporozoea: order Eucoccidiorida) have complex 1 or 2 host life cycles that involve endogenous development in the tissues of vertebrates or invertebrates and exogenous development in an oocyst, usually outside the host(s). Because tissue stages are logistically difficult or even impossible to obtain in natural (wild) host-parasite systems, the vast majority (> 98%) of species in this parasite complex are known only from the structure of their sporulated oocyst. Unfortunately, the quality of these species descriptions is uneven because no guidelines are available for workers in the field to follow. Here we …
