Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely

Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) declines during the past 20 years in the Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound regions contrast with stable or slightly increasing populations in southeastern areas of Alaska. Aspects of health status and body condition were investigated to test the hypothesis that these declines were driven by nutritional limitation, and to determine whether recent differential population trajectories among Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound, and southeast Alaska could have health-related components. For comparisons between 1992-96, three aspects of health status were examined; blood chemistry, blubber distribution and quantity; and blubber quality. The development of diving behavior and physiology in juvenile Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica was studied in order to determine the effects of age, body size, and condition on diving ability. During the austral summers of 1992, 1993, and 1994, the diving behavior of 39 pups and 15 yearlings was monitored using time depth recorders (TDRs). In addition, 26 pups were equipped with satellite-linked time depth recorders (SLTDRs) to track fall and winter diving behavior. Distribution Of Large Calanoid Copepods In Relation To Physical Oceanographic Conditions And Foraging Auklets In The Western Aleutian Islands, Kenneth Orval Coyle

Acoustic measurements and net sampling were used to estimate zooplankton abundance and biomass relative to water mass types and flow fields in the western Aleutian Islands during June and July, 1992 and 1993. Observations are interpreted relative to the distribution and abundance of least auklets (Aethia pusilla), which forage on zooplankton. Highest zooplankton biomass (up to 7 g m$\sp{-3}$) occurred during June 1992, in the pycnocline separating the upper mixed layer from the cold intermediate layer north of a front separating Bering Sea and Alaska Stream water. This thesis explored several aspects of the hormonal and cardiovascular physiology in pinnipeds (seals and sea lions). Plasma concentrations of the vasoactive hormones angiotensin II (Ang II), arginine vasopressin (AVP, the antidiuretic hormone) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were studied in six species of seals and sea lions. Resting levels of AVP, ANP and Ang II in these pinnipeds were similar to those reported for other vertebrate species, including humans. Age-related differences were found in the concentrations of these hormones in seals and sea lions. Geographic differences in hormone concentrations were found in Steller sea lions and harbor seals. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a library curriculum guide for grades four through eight for the Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Salem, New Jersey.

Prior to this guide, the library curriculum for Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School consisted of an outdated skills array. It no longer met the needs of the students or the staff of the school. With the addition of an automated circulation and catalog system, as well as CD-ROM, and the Internet, it became clear that the curriculum must be redeveloped, revised and thoroughly updated to include these new technologies. From 1991 through 1995, nearly 55,400 babies were born in Alaska. The overwhelming majority (89 percent) were born to mothers at least 20 years old. But that still leaves more than 6,000 babies born to teenage mothers during the first half of the 1990s. And more than a third of those babies were born to mothers under 18 years old. Teenage mothers and their children face economic disadvantages (see Births to Teens indicator), but they also face health risks. Half the youngest mothers (15 and under) and nearly four in ten older teenagers get inadequate prenatal care. Even among mothers …

The Green Star® Program is a voluntary program created in 1990 to encourage businesses, schools, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to educate employees, reduce waste, conserve energy, and recycle materials. The program began as a cooperative agreement among the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Alaska Center for the Environment, and the Pollution Prevention Office of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include over 400 Alaskan business firms, government agencies, schools, and non-profit organizations employing over 60,000 people in Alaska. The program has also expanded to include chapters in several others states. This …

This dissertation includes several discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neural control of singing in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. I collected the birds from a local wild population during the breeding season and migration. Chapter 2 addresses the role of testosterone in controlling volumes of the brain regions that control song learning and song production (vocal control regions, VCRs), which grow and shrink seasonally and are correlated with changes in singing behavior. Winter in interior Alaska (64$\sp\circ$N) is characterized by short photoperiod (LD 5:19) and chronic subfreezing temperatures. These conditions present a physiological challenge to overwintering animals. This challenge increases as body size decreases. In small animals, higher surface to volume ratio and concomitant higher mass-specific metabolic rate (compared to larger animals) vastly increase energetic demand. This thesis focuses on the physiological adaptations of the smallest (12 g) overwintering bird in interior Alaska, the Black-capped Chickadee (Parus atricapillus). The short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) was a widespread Tremarctine bear indigenous to North America until its extinction around 11,500 BP. Arctodus inhabited Pleistocene ice-free refugia in Eastern Beringia (the northwestern limit of its range) until at least 20,000 BP. Because of its gracile, long-legged build and extremely large size, most paleontologists believe this bear was a high-speed pursuit predator which had preyed on the largest herbivores of Pleistocene North America. Alternatively, energetic arguments have been used to suggest that Arctodus was too large to be carnivorous and evolved its large size within an herbivorous or omnivorous niche. To test these …
