The Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) determines the Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum) to be an endangered species pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). The Barton Springs salamander is known only from Barton Springs in Zilker Park, Austin, Travis County, Texas. The primary threats to this species are degradation of the quality and quantity of water that feeds Barton Springs due to urban expansion over the Barton Springs watershed. Also of concern is disturbance to the salamander’s surface habitat in the pools where it occurs. This action implements Federal protection provided by the Act for …

The Effect Of Temperature On Reproductive Characteristics Of An Asexually Reproducing Rotifer (Class Bdelloidea), Kurt E. Galbreath '97
Honors Projects
Most organisms exhibit sexual reproduction. Rotifers of the class Bdelloidea, however, seem to be a notable exception to this pattern. No male bdelloid individuals have ever been observed, and females apparently reproduce entirely through parthenogenesis. Sexual reproduction occurs in rotifers of the class Monogononta, and in many cases it is induced by environmental cues (e.g. temperature, diet). In this study, Philodina sp. was examined to determine if variations in temperature could induce a sexual cycle in bdelloid rotifers. Sibling individuals (clones) were raised with equal amounts of food at 20°C and 30°C. Newly hatched offspring produced by these individuals were …

Spin trapping compositions in general have now been discovered to be effective in treating a variety of disorders, including disorders such as those arising from ischemia, infection, inflammation, exposure to radiation or cytotoxic compounds, not just of the central and peripheral nervous systems but of peripheral organ disease having a wide variety of etiologies. In the preferred embodiment, the compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for intravenous, oral, topical, or nasal/pulmonary administration. Many different disorders can be treated using these compounds, including diseases or disorders of the central …

Loss And Grief Measurement Tool For Battered Women, Sherrie A. Eisele
Theses and Graduate Projects
Research has focused on battered women's safety needs which are supportive of women leaving their abusive partners. Despite the established intervention techniques and the availability of concrete support services, a high percentage of women will remain in or return to violent homes. A gap in research surrounds the emotional attachments and the lack of intrapersonal support for battered women, which would provide them with a process to heal from the abuse. Through an exploratory method, this study designed an easy-to-use measurement tool to assess the loss and grief battered women experience.
