Spawning Substrate And Adequate Escapement For Coho Salmon In The Ayakulik River, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, Raymond F. Hander

Escapement information for management of coho salmon, (Oncorhynchus kisutch), is lacking in some drainages on Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. In 1993 and 1994,1 assessed availability of spawning substrate for coho salmon in the Ayakulik River, a major drainage of the Refuge, as a potential cost-effective method for setting escapement goals. Spawning substrate was divided into three categories: optimal, suboptimal and marginally usable. I conducted a foot survey to count coho salmon spawners in 10 river sections during late October 1994 in three of four strata comprising the Ayakulik River. Estimation Of Abundance And Mortality Of Emigrating Chum Salmon And Chinook Salmon In The Chena River, Alaska, Brent David Peterson

During May-June, 1995 and 1996, the outmigration of juvenile chum salmon (Oncorkynchus keta) and chinook salmon (O. tschazvytscha) was sampled with floating traps in the area of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project, Chena River, Alaska. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) was higher at night than day for chinook juveniles, but not for chum juveniles. CPUE of both species decreased as the season progressed, but usually increased during higher-discharge events. CPUE is standardized by time; discharge was monitored as a covariate but was not included in CPUE calculations. The Jolly-Seber family of models was used on recapture data of fin-dipped fish to …

The Effects Of Volitional Laughter On Positive And Negative Affect And Depressive Symptoms, Gregory W. Krauss

The effects of volitional laughter on positive affect, negative affect, and day-to-day depressive symptoms among college students were investigated utilizing a non-equivalent control group design. The laughter group (n = 23) participated in daily volitional laughter treatments (three treatments of 30 seconds each) while the control group (n = 40) received no treatment. Both groups were pre- and post-tested using the PANAS (Positive And Negative Affect Schedule) and the CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies -Depression Inventory). This report documents the August 1996 monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Port Everglades Southport turning basin vicinity and adjacent areas of John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. This is the eleventh monitoring effort of the series carried out by Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center. Samples were taken chiefly during the first two weeks of August although some sampling of crab stations was delayed until late September/early October.

Twin Hydroxymethyluracil-A Base Pair Steps Define The Binding Site For The Dna-Bending Protein Tf1, Anne Grove, Marxa L. Figueiredo, Aldo Galeone, Luciano Mayol, E. Peter Geiduschek

The DNA-bending protein TF1 is the Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage SPO1- encoded homolog of the bacterial HU proteins and the Escherichia coli integration host factor. We recently proposed that TF1, which binds with high affinity (K(d) was ~3 nM) to preferred sites within the hydroxymethyluracil (hmU)-containing phage genome, identifies its binding sites based on sequence-dependent DNA flexibility. Here, we show that two hmU-A base pair steps coinciding with two previously proposed sites of DNA distortion are critical for complex formation. The affinity of TF1 is reduced 10-fold when both of these hmU-A base pair steps are replaced with A-hmU, G-C, or …

Transracial Adoption And Post-Placement Services, Alisha Kaul-Nelson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Transracial adoption, the adoption of a child that is of a different race than that of the adoptive family, is a controversial issue. With the disproportionately high number of children of color in foster care, transracial adoption is a viable option to provide these children with permanent families. Transracially adoptive families need support and available services to adjust satisfactorily to the adoption. Nine transracially adoptive families completed a self-administered questionnaire about participation in and availability of post-placement services. Data did conclude that services are being offered to families and that these families are utilizing services to assist in adjustment to …
