The Effects Of Estrogen On Dorsal Root Ganglion Neurons, Sheila A. Scoville

Skin sensation is mediated by dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Data indicates that skin sensitivity in female rats is estrogen-dependent. Some DRG neurons have estrogen receptors (ERs) which are regulated by estrogen. In these cells, nerve growth factor (NGF) and estrogen receptors colocalize. Regulation of NGF receptors and neuronal sensitivity to NGF may allow estrogen to regulate NGF-dependent genes. The goals of the present study were to determine which DRG neurons express the ER gene and to analyze the effects of long-term estrogen administration on the interrelated expression of tyrosine kinase A (trkA), preprotachykinin (PPT), and 68kD neurofilament (NF) genes …

The function of the type II estrogen binding site (EBS) has yet to be determined. However, a high affinity ligand for the binding site has been identified through HPLC and GC-MS. This ligand, MeHPLA, bears a structural relationship to a group of compounds called "phytoestrogens" which, along with MeHPLA, have been observed to suppress the cellular proliferation of estrogen sensitive MCF-7 breast cancer cells in vitro. Additionally, MeHPLA has been observed to suppress the growth of rat uteri in vivo. The high affinity of MeHPLA for the type II EBS suggests that this interaction is responsible for the observed suppression …

This study compared the psychophysiological reactivity of African American and European American males to authority. Nineteen African American males and 23 European American males were randomly assigned to either be interrogated by a police officer, or see a police officer interrogate that experimenter or view a videotape of police activity. Participants' physiological reactivity, acceptance of authority, fear of negative evaluation or social anxiety, and apprehension and anxiety in stressful situations as well as EMG, SCR, heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure were measured. Research studies have suggested that selenium may be important in the release of growth hormone, GH. A selenium-containing amino-acid residue, selenocysteine, has been identified as part of the active site of the three isoenzymes (Type I, II and III iodothyronine 5' -deiodinase) responsible for the synthesis of active thyroid hormone, T_3, which is reported to stimulate GH secretion. The importance of zinc in growth is well- documented because of its involvement in transcription and expression of GH and its intermediary, insulin growth factor I or IGF- I. Following Friedrich Nietzsche's critique of ethics, twentieth century philosophical investigations into ethics have attempted to abandon the universalist principles which guided the endeavors of Christianity, Kant and Bentham. The purpose of this work was to examine exactly how successful that endeavor has been. In order to represent the field of ethics as a whole given the limited space of the work I chose three distinct ethics, which in their formulations are representative of the current ethical clime. Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism serves as a model for radical individualism and solipsism. Alasdair MacIntyre' s virtue based ethic demonstrates communitarian trends. And the …

Policy statements by the Sentencing Commission for the State of Washington emphasize that gender, race, and community ties are irrelevant to sentencing decisions. Based on prior sentencing practices, these policies carry the potential to incorporate unrecognized sentencing disparity practices into the proposed sentencing equality solution. Using Washington's sentencing data under current sentencing guideline structures, this research examined the sentencing outcomes with respect to sentences given outside the guidelines. Bisulfite is commonly used to dechlorinate chlorinated municipal wastewater. However, several studies suggest that bisulfite is not effective in dechlorinating N-chlorinated amino components of wastewater. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an alternate dechlorinating agent, caroate (peroxysulfate), and to compare its rate of dechlorination of three different types of chloramines with that of bisulfite.

Four N-chlorinated amino compounds were investigated: N-chlorodiethylamine, N­ chloroalanylphenylalanine, N-chloroglycylphenylalanine, and N-[2-(N'-chloroimino)­ propanoyl]phenylalanine. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) was used to detect cocaine and/or the metabolite ecgonine methyl ester (EME) in tissue and plasma samples from male, maternal, and fetal New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. EME was consistently detected in all adult plasma samples 5 minutes after the injection of cocaine hydrochloride (cocaine•HCI, 2 mg/kg). EME was also in the liver, kidneys, testicles, and ovaries. Five minutes after the injection of cocaine•HCI, the male arterial pressure (MAP) increased from a mean control value of 79 ± 3.2 mmHg to 88 ± 4.1 mmHg, and the pCO₂ increased from a control value of28 ± …

Antisense Expression Of The Peptide Transport Gene Atptr2-B Delays Flowering And Arrests Seed Development In Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants, Wei Song, Serry Koh, Mihály Czakó, László Márton, Eliana Drenkard, Jeffrey M. Becker, Gary Stacey

Previously, we identified a peptide transport gene, AtPTRZ-B, from Arabidopsis thaliana that was constitutively expressed in all plant organs, suggesting an important physiological role in plant growth and development. To evaluate the function of this transporter, transgenic Arabidopsis plants were constructed expressing antisense or sense AtPTRZ-B. Genomic Southern analysis indicated that four independent antisense and three independent sense AtPTRZ-B transgenic lines were obtained, which was confirmed by analysis of the segregation of the kanamycin resistance gene carried on the T-DNA. RNA blot data showed that the endogenous AtPJRZ-B mRNA levels were significantly reduced in transgenic leaves and …

Watershed management means managing the South Dakota landscape. Many stakeholders are responsible for the landscape; therefore, cooperation, communication, knowledge, and a good sprinkling of wisdom must bring the various issues together for comprehensive watershed management.
This watershed management workshop was a continuation of the first workshop held in Huron, S.D. in February of 1995. As with the first, the goals were to bring people together to discuss principles related to earth processes, natural resources, agronomy, range science, fish and wildlife, and human uses. They have strange, little faces and bizarre ears. They have soft fur and a thin rubbery membrane across their long fingers. They are bats, Nebraska's only flying mammals.
