Kallistatin Is A Potent New Vasodilator, Juli Chao, John N. Stallone, Yu-Mei Liang, Li-Mei Chen, Dan-Zhao Wang, Lee Chao

Kallistatin is a serine proteinase inhibitor which binds to tissue kallikrein and inhibits its activity. The aim of this study is to evaluate if kallistatin has a direct effect on the vasculature and on blood pressure homeostasis. We found that an intravenous bolus injection of human kallistatin caused a rapid, potent, and transient reduction of mean arterial blood pressure in anesthetized rats. Infusion of purified kallistatin (0.07–1.42 nmol/kg) into cannulated rat jugular vein produced a 20–85 mmHg reduction of blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Vocalizations By Isolated Piglets: A Reliable Indicator Of Piglet Need Directed Towards The Sow, Daniel M. Weary, Stephen Ross, David Fraser

When suckling piglets are isolated from the sow and litter-mates they vocalize a great deal. Sows also call when isolated from their piglets. In one experiment, we found that isolated piglets doubled their call rate in response to playback of sow calls, indicating that piglets are directing calls towards the sow. In a second experiment, we found that variation in the piglet isolation calls related to aspects of the piglet's condition: piglets isolated for 13 min in an enclosure kept at approximately 14°C called more, used higher frequency calls and longer calls, than litter-mates isolated in an enclosure kept at …

Catches Of Humpback And Other Whales From Shore Stations At Moss Landing And Trinidad, California, 1919-1926, Phillip Clapham, Stephen Leatherwood, Isidore Szczepaniak, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

Logbook data from California shore whaling stations at Moss Landing (1919-1922 and 1924) and Trinidad (1920 and 1922-1926) are analyzed. The logs for the two stations record the taking of 2,111 whales, including 1,871 humpbacks, 177 fin whales, 26 sei whales, 3 blue whales, 12 sperm whales, 7 gray whales, 1 right whale, 1 Baird’s beaked whale, and 13 whales of unspecified type (probably humpbacks). Most whales were taken from spring to autumn, but catches were made in all months of some years. The sex ratios of humpback, fin, and sei whales (the three species with sufficient sample sizes to …

Plasmids were constructed in which DNA damage-inducible promoters recA, uvrA, and alkA from Escherichia coli were fused to the Vibrio fischeri luxCDABE operon. Introduction of these plasmids into E. coli allowed the detection of a dose-dependent response to DNA-damaging agents, such as mitomycin and UV irradiation. Bioluminescence was measured in real time over extended periods. The fusion of the recA promoter to luxCDABE showed the most dramatic and sensitive responses. lexA dependence of the bioluminescent SOS response was demonstrated, confirming that this biosensor's reports were transmitted by the expected regulatory circuitry. Community Support Program Staff Attitudes Toward Family Involvement With The Adult Who Has A Serious And Persistent Mental Illness, Timothy W. Himango

Research has shown that staff of mental health programs will blame family members for problems incurred by an adult member with a serious and persistent mental illness and therefore be excluded from invotvement in the adult's community support plan. Fifteen personal interviews of staff from four community support programs (CSP's) in Minnesota's Hennepin County were conducted, using a combination of a standardized open-ended question interview format and a S-point Likerttype scale. The CSP staff viewed family members as both positive and negative in their influence on the adult with a mental illness. Due to Northeast Asia's increasing energy demand, the Russian Far East's immense oil and gas reserves, and the close physical proximity between the two regions, international petroleum companies are exploring Russia's offshore petroleum reserves in the Far East. The Russian offshore industry, however, presents foreign investors with many legal uncertainties including exposure to environmental liabilities. This Comment suggests that Russia's environmental regulatory system, which includes a constitutional right to a healthy environment, presents international petroleum companies with a new set of circumstances to which they must adapt if Russian reserves are to satisfy Northeast Asia's rising energy needs. With the passage of the Drug Price Competition Act of 1984 in the United States, the recent German Supreme Court decision allowing for experimental use of patented pharmaceuticals, and indirectly through the adoption of the Supplemental Protection Certificate in Europe, Japan seems to be the lone large pharmaceutical market which does not allow in some way for the experimental use of patented drugs to gain regulatory approval for a generic equivalent.
