The Problem With Utility: Towards A Non-Consequentialist / Utility Theory Synthesis, Alanson P. Minkler

Economics Working Papers

I develop the argument that our current decision-making framework, utility theory, when used by itself, is 1) descriptively incomplete, 2) theoretically flawed, and 2) ethically questionable. In response, I offer an exploratory framework that incorporates both consequentialist and non-consequentialist motivations. Adding a commitment function provides a synthesis which remedies the problems associated with the sole use of utility theory. Finally, I show how philosophers Immanuel Kant, W.D. Ross, and Martin Buber provide an ethical basis for the framework.

Thermophilic Bacterial Activity In A Deep-Sea Sediment From The Pacific Ocean, Fred C. Dobbs, Karen A. Selph

Thermophilic bacterial activity was detected in a deep-sea sediment sample from the South Pacific Ocean at 12 degrees S, 135 degrees W, an area of the seafloor distant from known hydrothermal venting. Incubation of sediments amended with C-14-glutamate indicated maximal respiration (evolution of (CO2)-C-14) and assimilation (incorporation of C-14 into acid-precipitated macromolecules) of substrate at 52 degrees C, relative to 4 and 22 degrees C. A parallel experiment at another site (2 degrees S, 140 degrees W) yielded no evidence of thermophily. The detection of hydrocarbon contamination in the subsurface using geophysical techniques has been based on the known physical properties of high electrical resistivities (ρa) (low conductivities). However, geophysical field investigations at uncontrolled spill sites yield measurements of low resistivity (high conductivity). The purpose of this study is to test that in the natural environment some hydrocarbon spills (in the case of LNAPLs), can exhibit changes with time due to biodegradation, from electrically resistive to conductive. A Profile Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Keith Allen Boisvert

Spatial and temporal variability in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial assemblages in the lower portion of the James River was examined. The antibiotic resistance of culturable coliforms was compared to the resistance in the microbial community. Antibiotic resistance was determined via colony formation on media containing antibiotics. The antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline were used at concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ug/ml. Statistically significant differences in the mean number of antibiotic resistant isolates were observed among both sample sites and dates. From a military and strategic standpoint, the First World War was, for the British and most other belligerents, a disaster: economies were pressured to their limits and few events exemplified tactical, operational, and ·strategic futility more than the Western Front. Since 1918, politicians, journalists, and historians alike have endeavored to assess the reasons for the catastrophe that was the Great War and to place blame on anyone's shoulders but their own. The sexual victimization of children in an increasing crime problem in this country and is now also recognized as a serious mental health issue. It has been estimated that the risk of victimization could be as high as one in ten for boys (Finkelhor, 1979) and one in three for girls (Anderson, Martin, Mullen, Romans, & Herbison, 1993). Girls are eight times as likely as boys to suffer rape (Finkelhor & Dziuba-Leatherman, 1994). Prevalence rates estimate between 15% and 38% of women (Finkelhor, 1984; Herman, 1981) and 6% of men (Finkelhor, 1984) have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA).

Population and community descriptor values (parasites per host, prevalence per parasite species, variance/mean ratios, species density, and diversity indices) for the 7-species parasite community of 61 relatively homogeneous samples of Fundulus zebrinus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae) in the South Platte River of Nebraska, U.S.A., taken over a 14-yr period, are reported. South Platte River streamflow fluctuates over two orders of magnitude on several time scales-monthly, annually, and over multiple year wet-dry cycles. Relatively homogeneous sampling of a single host species with several parasite species provided a system that allowed assessment of the contribution of evolved parasite life cycles to population structure in …

Managerial emotion may be experienced and handled differently when reason and emotion are understood to be continuously (e.g., Eastern cultures) rather than dichotomously (e.g., Western cultures) related. Using a social constructionist perspective, this study investigated emotionality among directors from 48 different factories in the People’s Republic of China. Social, moral, and material/economic situations were identified as sources of pleasant and unpleasant managerial emotional experience. Thought-feeling continuities were identified in how the managers described their emotional experiences. Both pleasant and unpleasant emotions were experienced very intensely and were managed in ways that both conformed to and departed from cultural ideals. Managerial …
