Conservation biology is a multidisciplinary subject of recent origins. Analysis of cited monographs from the journal Conservation Biology resulted in a list of 47 monographs which were heavily cited for this discipline. Over half of these were from related disciplines such as ecology, genetics, evolution, population biology, statistics, and natural resource management.

A reliable method of labeling is needed to study dispersal of the braconid parasitoid, Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson), an important biological control of greenbugs, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), on grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. The feasibility of using aqueous solutions of rubidium chloride (RbCl) applied as a foliar spray or soil drench to label greenbugs and L. testaceipes developing within greenbugs was studied. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to identify the minimal concentration of RbCl to assure labeling of greenbugs and wasps, persistence of Rb throughout the wasp's life span, mobility of Rb to unsprayed sorghum leaves, and feasibility of …

Toxicity Of Seven Monoterpenoids To Tracheal Mites (Acari: Tarsonemidae) And Their Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Hosts When Applied As Fumigants, Marion D. Ellis, Frederick P. Baxendale

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to characterize the acute toxicity of 7 monoterpenoids to tracheal mites, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), and their honey bee, Apis mellifera L., hosts. Citral, thymol, carvacrol, α-terpineol, pulegone, d-limonene, and menthol were applied as fumigants to mite-infested honey bees. Thymol and menthol were the most toxic compounds to honey bees, and α-terpineol was the least toxic. Menthol, citral, thymol, and carvacrol were more toxic to tracheal mites than to honey bees. Pulegone, d-limonene, and α-terpineol were more toxic to honey bees than to tracheal mites. Menthol was 18.9 times more toxic to tracheal mites than to …

Mycobacterium paratuberculosis promoter-containing clones were isolated from a genomic DNA library constructed in the transcriptional-translational fusion vector pYUB76. The promoter-containing DNA fragments were identified in the surrogate host Mycobacterium smegmatis by expression of the promoterless lacZ reporter gene of pYUB76. The expression signals exhibited a wide range of strengths, as indicated by their corresponding β-galactosidase activities. Eight clones were sequenced and characterized further. Predicted open reading frames and codon usage were identified by computer analysis. Database searching for related sequences using the BLAST method revealed no homologies. This article summarizes the consensus among a group of experts from developmental and clinical psychology, sociology, social welfare, and law who sought to evaluate existing empirical evidence regarding the ways in which children are affected by divorce and the varying custody arrangements that follow it. Divorce and/or single parenthood tend to have adverse effects on children’s adjustment, with the magnitude of the effects varying depending on the psychological status of the two parents, the extent of conflict between them, and the financial circumstances, particularly after divorce. Major chemical species (Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and δ18O covering the last 110,000 years from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core were utilized in this study in order to reconstruct the soluble chemistry of the atmosphere over Greenland and interpret major climate events that have affected the region. During the Holocene the major chemical species and δ18O do not display any significant relationship. However, a strong inverse correlation was found between concentrations of the major chemical species and δ18O (a proxy for temperature) during the last glacial period, suggesting that in general during …

Public choice offers an analysis of the Constitution that is broadly consonant with an important aspect of the Framers' own approach. The Framers' values were those largely of the Scottish enlightenment: they believed in progress of civilization-the accumulation of wealth and knowledge. In order to create a structure of society that would accomplish these ends, they relied on another Enlightenment axiom, namely that man is an object of natural science. By understanding the predictable manner in which individuals are likely to behave in given situations, the Framers could shape a constitution that would channel their behavior to meet their Enlightenment …

This thesis investigates the influence Henri Bergson's philosophy had on Vladimir Nabokov's writing. Bergson's major concerns, as espoused in Time and Free Will, Creative Evolution, and Matter and Memory, are recognized in Pale Fire, The Defense, and King, Queen, Knave, as well as in the various reworkings of the novelist's autobiography, Speak, Memory. These texts illustrate a shared concern with issues about time and space, aesthetic experience, instinct and analysis, and the importance of memory. At the heart of all of these matters rests a common concern for both writers--the primacy of lived experience and the necessity of free will. …

The conclusions presented by the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC or Commission) to President Clinton in its Report on human cloning' are neither dramatic nor surprising. They are the practical responses of Western thinkers to the questions spawned by the announcement in February 1997 that a sheep had been cloned. The NBAC Report is also, by design, a meditation upon culture. It addresses many of the central conundrums of the age in considering what cloning means, and in expressing an underlying apprehension of contemporary culture.

Development And Evaluation Of Activity-Oriented Nutrition Classes For Pregnant And Parenting Teens, Darcy Owen, Patricia Kendall, Karen Wilken

A 4-week nutrition workshop series for pregnant and parenting teens was developed and pilot-tested with four groups of teens (n=60); 10 teens served as the control. Evaluation methods consisted of pre/post knowledge tests, skill/behavior checklists, and 24-hour food recalls. Mean knowledge score increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 58% pre-workshop to 87% post-workshop compared to no change in the control group. further, 87% of participants reported nutrition-related improvements in skills/behaviors. despite this, no significant improvement in self-reported dietary intake was seen. observed barriers to dietary change included lack of control over food purchasing and preparation and lack of readiness to change dietary habits.

Data from usable pesticide survey responses was entered in a computer database and checked for entry errors. A database record was stored for each unique combination of grower, crop, pesticide, and target pest(s). All character data (such as brand names) were standardized for consistent usage and spelling. Specific methods used to enter and standardize data and to perform calculations are described below:
