A Cultural Test Of Transforming Leadership Using Three Case Studies : W.E.B. Dubois, Leopold Sedar Senghor, And Vaclav Havel, Christie Getman Jan 1997

A Cultural Test Of Transforming Leadership Using Three Case Studies : W.E.B. Dubois, Leopold Sedar Senghor, And Vaclav Havel, Christie Getman

Honors Theses

The overall goal of this research project is to do a comprehensive study that integrates an undergraduate career in leadership studies with a thorough, critical examination of a topic that is of interest to me. Since beginning course work at the Jepson School, I have felt that a majority of the theories and concepts studied have been primarily focused on the leader and the follower, and their relationship. My goal is to examine the theory of transforming leadership through specific case studies of transforming leaders, and test how the element of culture affects this transforming leadership.

Economic System As A Factor Influencing Leadership Behavior : A Case Study Of Leadership In Russia From 1917 To 1995, Matthew B. Danis

Honors Theses

Envisioned by Lenin and molded by Stalin, the Soviet Union, and its communist economic system, lasted seventy-four years, from 1917 to 1991. The inception of communism in the Soviet Union was a result of the losses Russia incurred during World War I. Devastation during the war and mismanagement by the government throughout created an atmosphere ripe for revolution. With the leadership of Lenin, the Bolshevik Revolution occurred in November 1917, and the Communist Party was created in March 1918.

Lifting The Bar : Leadership In The Attorney-Client Relationship, Dennis C. Barghaan Jan 1997

Lifting The Bar : Leadership In The Attorney-Client Relationship, Dennis C. Barghaan

Honors Theses

VA State Senator Mark Earley, a lawyer by trade, addressed the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association in October 1995, and claimed that the profession, in order to survive, must engage in both serious talk and sincere action. As a result, much of the negative feeling about lawyers within American society will begin to change as the public sees attorneys for what they should be -- leaders in their everyday interactions with clients.

Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler Jan 1997

Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler

Honors Theses

In many areas of the United States, people complain about the leaders in their communities. Historically, when people think of 'leaders' in their communities, the majority of them are predominantly white, male and affluent. The American citizen believes that a portion of these leaders are shrouded in scandal, corruption, mistrust, exclusiveness, and power. The American citizen finds difficulty when trying to enter into the elite group of decision makers. Citizens and organizations accuse these leaders of making decisions that do not reflect the best interest of society, but rather benefit themselves. As a result, Americans call out for better leadership …

"A Model Of Crisis", Charlotte A. Trudel Jan 1997

"A Model Of Crisis", Charlotte A. Trudel

Honors Theses

During the spring 1996 semester, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies offered a special topics course titled "Leadership in Crisis." The course, co-taught by Dr. Richard Couto and former Virginia Attorney-General Mary-Sue Terry, intended to "offer students CPR instruction to sustain organizational and personal vision" (Couto) for a group or organization dealing with crisis. Members of the class were instructed in crisis taxonomy and classification, crisis in diverse contexts, crisis management plans, crisis perspectives from both inside and outside of organizations, and the role of the personal in dealing with crisis. The faculty instructors determined that although the course had …

Making The Net Work : The Influence Of Networking On Black Women Executives' Leadership In The Telecommunications Industry, Kayren J. Shoffner Jan 1997

Making The Net Work : The Influence Of Networking On Black Women Executives' Leadership In The Telecommunications Industry, Kayren J. Shoffner

Honors Theses

Leadership is exemplified by growth. It is not enough to be a strong leader; in order to develop that leadership, one must continue to grow. In order to grow, one must be in the company of likeminded people. Hence, the power of networking to increase and enhance one's leadership development is great. When I look at my leadership development over the past four years, I am able to identify definite growth. This growth was facilitated by the networking situations in which I placed myself or created.

Previous research in this area reveals that women in general, and black women in …

Leadership Skills : A Course Proposal, Joe Rinaldi Jan 1997

Leadership Skills : A Course Proposal, Joe Rinaldi

Honors Theses

Theory based classes are the foundation that future leadership is built upon. These classes provide a useful framework that leadership majors can draw from for the rest of their lives, but this ignores where they are now. The leadership school focuses too much on leadership beyond graduation and not enough on the limitless opportunities for leadership that are available to students today. The leadership school has no interaction with the vast number of leadership training courses that are taught to every group from Resident Assistants to Orientation Counselors to the various honor councils and governmental bodies that flourish on campus. …

The Equal Division Rule Of The Democratic National Committee And Its Effects On Female Leadership, Elizabeth Musick Jan 1997

The Equal Division Rule Of The Democratic National Committee And Its Effects On Female Leadership, Elizabeth Musick

Honors Theses

At the conclusion of this research, I have found that male and female leaders in high political positions (such as the head of state party) differ only slightly in their leadership styles. As Sue Wren pointed out, she does not know if the constant company of male leaders has affected her style more than her own personal leanings toward one leadership practice over another. According to research regarding how one's sex affects his/her leadership, it has been found that," ... sex is related to a preference for using a particular style but does not cause a preference for a particular …

The Prophet And The Preacher : An Exploration Of Charismatic Leadership In Two American Religious Movements, Stefanie R. Mathew Jan 1997

The Prophet And The Preacher : An Exploration Of Charismatic Leadership In Two American Religious Movements, Stefanie R. Mathew

Honors Theses

From its very inception. the general, overarching goal of this study has been to integrate two academic disciplines that had a relatively small amount of previous scholarship uniting them. This paper has shown that it is quite possible to intermingle the fields of leadership studies and religion successfully. The specific purpose of this paper was the further exploration of the topic of charismatic leadership in a relatively untouched context, that of radical religious groups in modem America. The result of this project is a lengthy treatment of the topic of charismatic leadership in two specific case studies, and the final …

Women's Leadership : A Study On Empowerment As Related To Midwifery, J.T. Henry Jan 1997

Women's Leadership : A Study On Empowerment As Related To Midwifery, J.T. Henry

Honors Theses

The hypothesis stating empowerment is a competency displayed within feminine leadership and manifested in the practice of midwifery is proven through the research of this project. The case studies and literature review both provide the evidence to make this conclusion. Researchers Loden, Klenke, and Rosener are proponents of feminine leadership, and whom support the style of feminine leadership has one which will be vital in the coming century. The midwives and mothers whose testimony are secured within the case studies also advocate the importance of feminine leadership and the competency empowerment as being present in their experiences, ensuring success. Within …

The culmination of our efforts has resulted in a comprehensive, four-year curriculum guide entitled, FootPrints of a Leader: Studying the Path of Leadership. Throughout the guide, numerous concepts, theories, and situations of leadership are defined and analyzed for the educator. Following each section, detailed descriptions of lessons and activities are provided to reinforce the student's understanding of the material. Finally, a list of other suggested …

Welfare Reform: An Historical Overview, Richard K. Caputo Jan 1997

Welfare Reform: An Historical Overview, Richard K. Caputo

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This essay provides an historical overview of welfare reform efforts prior to enactment of The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 by the 104th Congress. The author argues that the 1996 Act reaffirmed the labor market as the major arbiter of economic well-being of American citizens. In so doing, passage of the Act signified the formal end of income maintenance for able-bodied parents and released the federal government from assuming major responsibility for reducing poverty per se.

Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill Jan 1997

Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Cheyenne Autumn is an unflinching historical portrait of a people confronting physical extermination and cultural annihilation at the hands of duplicitous government forces. This work is structurally a chapter-by-chapter chronicle of a Cheyenne outbreak starting in Oklahoma and ending in the surrender of Little Wolf and his followers hundreds of miles and six months later in Montana. The northern Cheyennes of the Yellowstone region are promised land, food, and protection in treaties signed by the U.S. Government. These agreements, however, are repeatedly and brutally broken by the government.

Hundreds of northern Cheyennes agree, under government coercion, to removal to Oklahoma …

Deterrence’S Difficulty, Neal K. Katyal Jan 1997

Deterrence’S Difficulty, Neal K. Katyal

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

We all crave simple elegance. Physicists since Einstein have been searching for a grand unified theory that will tie everything together in a simple model. Law professors have their own grand theories - law and economics's Coase Theorem and constitutional law's Originalism immediately spring to mind. Criminal law is no different, for the analogue is our faith in deterrence - the belief that increasing the penalty on an activity will mean that fewer people will perform it. This theory has much to commend it. After all, economists and shoppers have known for ages that a price increase in a good …

Ethics In Alternative Dispute Resolution: New Issues, No Answers From The Adversary Conception Of Lawyers’ Responsibilities, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 1997

Ethics In Alternative Dispute Resolution: New Issues, No Answers From The Adversary Conception Of Lawyers’ Responsibilities, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The romantic days of ADR appear to be over. To the extent that proponents of ADR, like myself, were attracted to it because of its promise of flexibility, adaptability, and creativity, we now see the need for ethics, standards of practice and rules as potentially limiting and containing the promise of alternatives to rigid adversarial modes of dispute resolution. It is almost as if we thought that anyone who would engage in ADR must of necessity be a moral, good, creative, and, of course, ethical person. That we are here today is deeply ironic and yet, also necessary, as "appropriate" …

Introduction: What Will We Do When Adjudication Ends? A Brief Intellectual History Of Adr, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 1997

Introduction: What Will We Do When Adjudication Ends? A Brief Intellectual History Of Adr, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

I begin by thanking the UCLA Law Review, and particularly Darrin Mollet and Bryce Johnson, for seeing the timeliness of the topic of alternative dispute resolution and organizing this Symposium-collecting some of the best thinkers, writers, and practitioners in the field to discuss, among other things, the economics of ADR, the role of lawyers, courts, and judges in ADR, and the application of ADR to a variety of substantive legal and regulatory problems. In this Introduction, I would like to introduce the topics and the authors, and put them in the larger context of the movement that is now called …

The Silences Of The Restatement Of The Law Governing Lawyers: Lawyering As Only Adversary Practice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 1997

The Silences Of The Restatement Of The Law Governing Lawyers: Lawyering As Only Adversary Practice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The attempt to "restate" the law governing lawyers is a noble effort. The drafts, to date, have presented a heroic gathering, in one place, of case law and competing formulations of a variety of the professional disciplinary codes. The drafters have attempted to settle some difficult and often contentious issues regarding lawyer responsibilities to clients, to courts, to third parties, and to themselves. At the same time, this Restatement suffers from the temporal flaws of all its sisters and brothers - in its efforts to "restate" the law it looks backward, not forward, and thus will provide little guidance, at …

Federalism: Essential Concepts In Evolution - The Case Of The European Union, Koen Lenaerts Jan 1997

Federalism: Essential Concepts In Evolution - The Case Of The European Union, Koen Lenaerts

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article aims to examine the instrumental aspects of the European Union structure in order to elucidate the degree of federalism that it contains. The analysis considers: the status of the central authority; the constitutional embedding of the division of powers between the central authority and the component entities; the existence of mechanisms to preserve the identity of the component entities; the foundation of the constitutional order on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law; and the enforceability of the constitution.

Invoking The U.S. Attorney-Client Privilege: Japanese Corporate Quasi-Lawyers Deserve Protection In U.S. Courts Too, Jason Marin Jan 1997

Invoking The U.S. Attorney-Client Privilege: Japanese Corporate Quasi-Lawyers Deserve Protection In U.S. Courts Too, Jason Marin

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note discusses whether the attorney-client privilege applies to Japanese in-house legal personnel who are not members of any country's bar. Part I defines the attorney-client privilege, and explains what communications the privilege protects. Part I also compares the legal systems of Japan and the United States. Part II examines case law and commentary on the issue of applying the privilege to non-US attorneys who are not admitted to any bar. Part III argues that the arguments for applying the attorney-client privilege to non-US, non-bar in-house legal personnel are particularly effective considering the structure of the Japanese legal system. This …

The Ethical Implications Of The Globalization Of The Legal Profession: A Challenge To The Teaching Of Professional Responsibility In The Twenty-First Century, Mary C. Daly Jan 1997

The Ethical Implications Of The Globalization Of The Legal Profession: A Challenge To The Teaching Of Professional Responsibility In The Twenty-First Century, Mary C. Daly

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article accepts globalization as a defining characteristic of the world order of the late twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries and as a force majeure on the legal profession. It challenges the professional responsibility academy to explore the incipient structural transformations that are taking place on a macro level and to reconfigure the classic curriculum to acknowledge the ethical implications of the globalization of the legal profession.
