Mikhail Bakhtin And Change In The Common Law, Russell West Jr. Jan 1997

Mikhail Bakhtin And Change In The Common Law, Russell West Jr.

Washington Law Review

Traditional legal analysis comprehends change in the common law over time as a shifting legal response to different facts and circumstances. This approach does not examine the internal mechanisms by which the meaning of a judicial opinion changes when cited in later legal writing. Mikhail Bakhtin, a literary and cultural theorist, argued that any statement can be understood only through the context in which it is uttered and that every change in context causes a shift in the statement's meaning. This Comment analyzes the internal mechanisms of judicial opinions in light of Bakhtin's theories. First, this Comment describes one example …

U.S. Canadian Refugee Policy And Asylum Requests: The Case For Gender-Specific Policy, Karrah R. Lompa Jan 1997

U.S. Canadian Refugee Policy And Asylum Requests: The Case For Gender-Specific Policy, Karrah R. Lompa

Whittier Scholars Program

In May 1996 a controversial and heavily publicized case went before the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) Board of Appeals (BIA). The case involved a young woman seeking asylum in the U.S. What drew attention to the case was the basis upon which she was seeking asylum: membership in a particular social group. This category in and of itself is not uncommon. But, the social group that she claimed to be a member of was: “Young women of the Tchamba-Kunsuntu Tribe” who have not had FGM [female genital mutilation], as practiced by the tribe, and who oppose the …

Findings From A Survey On Bus Stop Design, Kay Fitzpatrick, Dennis Perkinson, Kevin Hall Jan 1997

Findings From A Survey On Bus Stop Design, Kay Fitzpatrick, Dennis Perkinson, Kevin Hall

Journal of Public Transportation

The bus stop is the first point of contact between the passenger and the bus service. The spacing, location, and design of bus stops significantly influence transit system performance and customer satisfaction. At present, relatively few transit agencies have comprehensive reference material available to assist in bus stop location and design. In recognition of the importance of bus stop location and design, the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) sponsored research to develop guidelines for locating and designing bus stops in various operating environments. These guidelines can assist transit agencies, local governments, and others (e.g., developers) in locating and designing bus …

A "Glimpse" Of The Status Of The Discipline: Internal Identity Of Speech Communication At A Small College, Barbara J. Adler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the results of a survey administered to faculty and administration at a small U.S. liberal arts college associated with the Lutheran Church, to assess the attitudes toward the speech communication discipline at the college. Speech communication discipline was assessed according to its level of respect, its overall status and its identity as a reputable academic field. Politics Of The Marginal Vs. Truth Seeking: Pmsi As The Future Of Pragmatist Social Inquiry, Lutfi Altunsu Jan 1997

Politics Of The Marginal Vs. Truth Seeking: Pmsi As The Future Of Pragmatist Social Inquiry, Lutfi Altunsu

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

It is argued that social theory is in a crises in addressing the social, economical, cultural, and political relations in so called postmodern society which is a new formation in late twentieth century. For this reason, some of the sociologists who follow Symbolic Interactionist tradition have attempted to associate Symbolic Interactionism (SI) with Postmodernism (PM). Renewing Symbolic Interactionism can help us to overcome this crisis in theorizing the postmodern world. In order to see whether or not this association is possible and desirable, Symbolic Interactionist and Postmodernist traditions are compared at ontological, epistemological, and axiological levels. And, also the ideas …

Looking Below The Rim: Deconceptualizing Sport As A "Male Activity"- Acknowledging Women's Contributions, Kristin L. Oakley

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Throughout its existence, sport has stigmatized “female” characteristics as an inhibition to one’s athleticism, while at the same time emphasizing the need for team cohesion in order to excel. In an effort to value women’s contributions to sport, and counteract the popular equation of sport as “male,” I have examined and compared the amount of nonverbal support which men and women communicate between teammates. Using the basketball court as my field of observation, I videotaped Humboldt State University’s men’s and women’s intercollegiate basketball teams (Division II squads) for a two year period, culminating 124 hours of data (granted exempt status …

FOCUS on Boise State

Most of us have vivid memories of our childhood neighborhoods- the old lady next door with the robust flower garden, a favorite tree house, the corner market or the proverbial haunted house. Neighborhoods leave lasting impressions and affect us in ways we may not realize until we're adults and start putting down our own roots. Why are we drawn to certain neighborhoods? In this issue of FOCUS we explore the importance of these mini communities in our lives and how neighborhoods have changed over the years. Karen Woods cover illustration.
