Outside Evaluation Of Conecticut's Family Resource Centers : Final Report, Barbara Wauchope, Susan Frankel, Cynthia Harvell

Sociology

In 193, the Connecticut State Department of Education received federal support for the activities of nine existing Family Resource Centers (FRC) and for funding new FRCs. The FRCs were based on the premise that many childhood and adolescent problems can be prevented by strengthening effective family management practices and establishing a continuum of child care and support services linked to public schools or located in public school buildings. This report details the evaluation of the 18 school-based/linked FRCs, describing their structure and contexts, examining evidence of service use, and presenting information on the effects of the FRCs on families and …

Determinants Of The Risk And Timing Of Alcohol And Illicit Drug Use Onset Among Natives And Non-Natives: Similarities And Differences, Margaret L. De Wit, Bryan G. Embree, David J. De Wit

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Objective: Employing probability samples from the Ontario Health Survey Supplement (Ontario Ministry of Health, 1990/91) and a community of Native Ontario reserve residents (Embree, 1993), this study compared and contrasted Natives' and Non-natives' determinants of drug and alcohol use onset. Method: Proportional Hazards techniques identified factors associated with the risk and timing of onset of substance use (alcohol and illicit drugs) for both cultural groups, and special attention was paid to the role of family background characteristics as precursors to early alcohol and drug-use onset. Results: The multivariate results reveal that, for both Natives and Non-natives alike, and considering both …

Repositioning Ourselves In The Contact Zone, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

This essay investigates ways students respond to cultural differences and cultural conflicts presented in literary texts and considers effective pedagogical strategies for dealing with such issues in the classroom. How can we encourage an exploration of cultural issues that texts embody and critique in a way that encourages an understanding of ways values are culturally constructed?

Teaching General Biology For Nonmajors Through Community Service Projects, Mary Wells Phillips Feb 1997

Teaching General Biology For Nonmajors Through Community Service Projects, Mary Wells Phillips

Higher Education

For many students, especially for the biology nonmajors, science is often one of the last courses they take before completing their degree. Often, these students enter my course with a previous "bad" experience from courses in high school or have developed anxieties regarding what science is all about. They are reluctant learners who frequently shy from questions and classroom discussions. Their own insecurities and presumed lack of knowledge frequently !eaves them floundering and confused. The message is, "I am here because I need 'x' number of science units before completing my degree."

Faculty Publications

The link between organizational configurations and performance has become a central and somewhat controversial focus of research in the strategic management literature, We statistically aggregated results from 40 original tests of the configurations-performance relationship. In contrast to previous qualitative reviews, this meta-analysis demonstrated that an organization's performance is partially explained by its configuration. Tests of four potential moderators showed that organizations' configurations contributed more to performance explanation to the extent that studies used (1) broad definitions of configurations, (2) single-industry samples, and (3) longitudinal designs, Results highlight the need for programmatic research.
