"Doamne Milueste": The Life Of A Contemporary Orthodox Christian Monastery, David George Subu Dec 1997

"Doamne Milueste": The Life Of A Contemporary Orthodox Christian Monastery, David George Subu

Masters Theses

The Holy Dormition Monastery demonstrates the Orthodox Christian appeal to the tradition and authority of the Church Fathers, Mothers, and the ultimate source of power, the Holy Trinity, which is enacted on the several complimentary and interactive levels of monastic history, spatial and architectural arrangements, personal relationships and community structure, and liturgical or ritual activity cycles. This appeal to authority and power is achieved most notably through a complex system of ritual acts that are typically "embedded" into the many facets of the monastic life which simultaneously orients the monastic participant towards the correct, "Orthodox" relationships with those sources of …

Cultural Considerations In Clinical Reasoning: An Occupational Therapy Case Study, Sandra M. Winter

Masters Theses

This study looked at an occupational therapist's work with clients from varied cultural backgrounds. Qualitative research strategies and a phenomenological approach were used to gather data through interviews with a single respondent and observation of treatment. This methodology was used to examine the process utilized to acquire cultural knowledge and integrate that knowledge into treatment planning. Research focused on: (a) how the cultural background of a client influenced an occupational therapist as she planned and implemented treatment, (b) how the treatment process was influenced by cultural differences between the therapist and the client, and (c) how training or education helped …

Playing Defense, Robert F. Nagel Dec 1997

Playing Defense, Robert F. Nagel

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Noting that the Romer opinion condemns the motives behind Amendment 2 without pausing even briefly to examine the social context in which it was enacted, Professor Nagel describes the decision as a model of the intolerant impulse in action. He traces this impulse to the Justices' unwillingness to examine their own role--and that of the rest of the constitutional law establishment- in creating the underlying conditions that produced Amendment 2.

In order to identify those conditions, Professor Nagel analyzes the primary document used by Colorado for Family Values during its campaign on behalf of the initiative. He argues that this …

Self-Love And Social Are The Same: Reflections On Autonomy, Autobiography, And The Responsible Self, Eugene R. August Dec 1997

Self-Love And Social Are The Same: Reflections On Autonomy, Autobiography, And The Responsible Self, Eugene R. August

University of Dayton Review

I begin with this question for a specific, local reason. When the Humanities Base theme of autonomy and responsibility is raised in the classroom, students frequently misperceive the terms as opposites: they see autonomy vs. responsibility. As a result, classroom discussions of this theme often go nowhere because the discussants have defined autonomy as one's right to do as one pleases and responsibility as a restriction imposed by those in power. Attempts to explore issues such as abortion, gun control, same-sex marriage, and physician-assisted suicide quickly become mired in the mono-theme of a debate between individual rights and social repression. …

Lessons From Yellow Medicine County: Work And Custodial Service At The County Poor Farm, 1889-1935, Ralph Woehle Dec 1997

Lessons From Yellow Medicine County: Work And Custodial Service At The County Poor Farm, 1889-1935, Ralph Woehle

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Poor farms, which spread to the Midwestern United States in the nineteenth century, were intended to provide work for their residents. Existing literature indicates that the need for work and the ability of residents to work was limited on Midwestern poor farms and that it decreased with time. In the historical case study of a rural Minnesota poor farm presented here, data support contentions of the literature. Between 1889 and 1935, the Yellow Medicine County Poor Farm expanded and modernized the house, while allowing an originally modern farming operation to stagnate. Residents who accounted for most of the occupancy were …

Justice George Sutherland And Economic Liberty: Constitutional Conservatism And The Problem Of Factions, Samuel R. Olken Dec 1997

Justice George Sutherland And Economic Liberty: Constitutional Conservatism And The Problem Of Factions, Samuel R. Olken

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Most scholars have viewed Justice George Sutherland as a conservative jurist who opposed government regulation because of his adherence to laissez-faire economics and Social Darwinism, or because of his devotion to natural rights. In this Article, Professor Olken analyzes these widely held misperceptions of Justice Sutherland's economic liberty jurisprudence, which was based not on socio-economic theory, but on historical experience and common law. Justice Sutherland, consistent with the judicial conservatism of the Lochner era, wanted to protect individual rights from the whims of political factions and changing democratic majorities. The Lochner era differentiation between government regulations enacted for the public …

Drug Use Among Female High School Senior Students In Michigan: An Application Of Social Bond Theory, Halime Unal

Masters Theses

Drug use is a serious problem affecting the American adolescents today. The focus of this study was the relationship between the elements of social bond and drug use among female high school senior students. The Evolution Of Character Education: From Hellfire And Brimstone To Constructivism, Arati Singh Dec 1997

The Evolution Of Character Education: From Hellfire And Brimstone To Constructivism, Arati Singh

Special Topics, General

Since colonial times, character education has played a kaleidoscopic role in American schools. Seventeenth and eighteenth century Puritan curriculum was synonymous with an exceedingly rigid and religious moral code. Nineteenth century policy makers adopted a Pan-Protestant, and then a generalized Christian philosophy of character education, as they pursued a common school system. As twentieth century American society grew increasingly pluralistic, the religious basis of character education succumbed to a more secular framework. Predictably, this century has seen character education be demoted to just one of many competing items on the national education agenda. Paradoxically, today's violence-filled headlines evince a more …

Training In Law And Psychology: Models From The Villanova Conference, Donald N. Bersoff, Jane Goodman-Delahunty, J. Thomas Grisso, Valerie P. Hans, Norman G. Poythress Jr., Ronald G. Roesch

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Although the domain of law and psychology is a burgeoning and popular field of study, there has never been a concerted effort to evaluate current training models or to develop newer, more effective ones. Forty-eight invited participants attended a national conference held at Villanova Law School to remedy this deficiency. Working groups addressed issues of education and training for the undergraduate level; for doctoral level programs in law and social science; for forensic clinical training; for joint-degree (JD/PhD-PsyD) programs; for those in practica, internships, and postdoctoral programs; and for continuing education. This article delineates levels and models of training in …

Afdc And Homicide, Lance Hannon Dec 1997

Afdc And Homicide, Lance Hannon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Conservatives generally believe that government largess has created a morally defective welfare subculture. Some argue that excessive welfare payments contribute to high homicide rates by undermining individual responsibility and attachment to traditional social institutions. Liberals, on the other hand, suggest that higher welfare benefits may reduce homicide rates by alleviating the strains of poverty and promoting educational achievement. Drawing on a review of literature and aggregate welfare data, this study examined the relationship between local AFDC benefit levels and homicide rates. Variables were derived from Department of Health and Human Services, 1990 Census, and FBI data describing social/economic areas (N=394). …

Eco Maps: A Tool To Bridge The Practice-Research Gap, Rena D. Harold, Lucy R. Mercier, Lisa G. Colarossi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The social work profession has played host to a continuing dialogue about the interplay between research and practice. Traditionally, practitioners collect data that have real-world usefulness and are relevant to the intervention process with particular clients. Researchers, on the other hand, are skilled in designing and conducting studies that result in data that can be generalized to build the profession's foundation of knowledge. Data collection tools and techniques that are both relevant to practice and germane to knowledge-building are needed. This paper demonstrates the use of the eco map, a common practice tool, to collect and organize data about families, …

Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Settlers of New Orleans brought with them ideas of gardens that influenced the way they shaped gardens in the colony. Although the influence of those ideas has been acknowledged in studies of New Orleans gardens, specific connections between the ideas and gardens in New Orleans have not been made. To illuminate some of those connections, this study focuses on one garden pattern — a composition of long, rectangular planting beds -- that is common to at least fifty gardens in New Orleans and to European gardens dating from the ninth century. A developmental history that chronicles the use of the …

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk Dec 1997

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grounded theory is becoming an increasingly popular research methodology for use in adult education and other forms of educational inquiry, yet there is currently considerable disagreement among its co-founders concerning the implementation of this approach. Reflective of this ambiguity and to further confuse matters for the potential grounded theorist, educators who have used this methodology in the field often operationalize grounded theory’s procedures and practices according to their own interpretations and contextualiy-specific research needs. Moreover, these analysts often do not thoroughly document the specifics of their research, often failing to provide information concerning the methodological decisions they surely must have …
