The Earned Income Tax Credit And Welfare Reform, James Williams Jan 1997

The Earned Income Tax Credit And Welfare Reform, James Williams

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

The focus of this paper is the EITC and its important role in welfare reform. The current welfare system has been criticized on the grounds that it does not promote and encourage work. Critics also claim that welfare welfare is ineffective in reducing poverty, especially among children. The EITC addresses several of these complaints. First, the EITC "[i]s strongly pro-work. Only working families qualify for it. In addition, unlike welfare benefits, EITC payments rise rather than fall with earnings across that critical low-income range where we want to encourage work effort." Proponents of the EITC, such as Senator Bill Bradley …

48 Postcards : A Road Trip Memoir, Stephanie J. Chiariello Jan 1997

48 Postcards : A Road Trip Memoir, Stephanie J. Chiariello

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

To fulfill the University Honors Program's thesis requirement, I have written a narrative account of the three week/forty-eight state road trip I took with my sister and a friend in the summer of 1995. This odyssey across the United States proved to be one of the most profound growing experiences of my life and I wanted to examine some of the issues involved in this brand of travel, especially those of self examination and self-discovery. When I decided to take this trip, I was at the lowest point I'd ever been in a life littered with low points. As a …

In addition, the study explored the role of empowerment on diabetes self-management, quality of life, and selected health resource utilization of these patients. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, "empowerment" was operationalized into two domains: "first stage" and "second stage." Additionally, it was found that these two domains had three subdomains each. The "first stage" of empowerment subdomains were: (i) instrumental beliefs, (ii) outcome expectancy, and (iii) perceived self-efficacy; while the "second …

Lived Experiences Of Male Nursing Students With Caring., Patricia Jean Young Jan 1997

Lived Experiences Of Male Nursing Students With Caring., Patricia Jean Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fifteen male nursing students from four baccalaureate nursing schools in West Virginia participated in this phenomenological study. The phenomena of interest was the lived experiences of male student nurses related to caring. Demographic data was obtained in the interview process. Semistructured interview questions were used in the individual interviews, which were all audiotaped. The methodology used was based on the Swanson-Kauffman and Schonwald method, which entailed the four step process of bracketing, analyzing, intuiting, and describing. Five themes were identified. The Primacy of Caring was the first theme. Characteristics of caring, the origins of caring, the lived experiences of caring …

Racial Identity In Biracial Adolescents From One African-American And One Caucasian-American Parent, Lanice Stanley Jan 1997

Racial Identity In Biracial Adolescents From One African-American And One Caucasian-American Parent, Lanice Stanley

Modern Psychological Studies

Racial identity development in biracial children within American society is essential for the discovery of selfconcept. Identity development in adolescents with one African American and one Caucasian-American parent is a complex process deriving from social influences and individual self-conceptualization. Three approaches of identity preference are found to be the most common in biracial youth. The first is the denial of one race, the second is over-identification of the favored culture, and lastly the incorporation of both racial backgrounds as a separate identity.

Practice And Fit In The Allocation Of The Resource Of Faculty Time: A Study Of Current And Preferred Scholarly Practice Of The Faculties Of Ten Theological Schools Affiliated With The Presbyterian Church (Usa), Roger Allen Nicholson

Theses and Dissertations

Faculties, deans, and trustees of theological schools affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) were surveyed to determine current faculty practice; the practice preferred by faculty, deans. and trustees; the fit between current and preferred practice; and faculty practice and faculty preference difference according to categorical variables such as gender, race, and rank.

Seven variables defined faculty practice: workweek in hours, instruction, scholarship, service, advising, governance, and other. Scholarship was subdivided into three categories adapting Ernest Boyer’s multi-dimensional definition of scholarship: orginitive, applied, and teaching. Fit was defined in two ways: statistical fit and practical fit.

The reported workweek was comparable …

Jaffee V. Redmond: Towards Recognition Of A Federal Counselor-Battered Woman Privilege, Michael Bressman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Part I of this Article reviews the Jaffee decision.' Part II discusses the meaning of the Supreme Court's opinion, focusing on the Court's analysis of the important interests at stake in recognizing the asserted testimonial privilege. In Part II, this Article argues that the Court followed the intent of Congress in crafting a psychotherapist- patient privilege. Furthermore, the extension of the privilege to cover confidential communications made to social workers indicates that there is room for further development of the privilege. In Part III, the Article argues that Jaffee provides the foundation for recognition of a counselor-battered woman privilege in …

Small Business And Community Economic Development: Transactional Lawyering For Social Change And Economic Justice, Susan R. Jones

Clinical Law Review

Small business and community economic development (CED) clinics represent an important and growing component to the future of clinical legal education.
