Swosu Fact Book Fall 1997, Denisa Engelman Jan 1997

Swosu Fact Book Fall 1997, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Genetic Dilemmas And The Child's Right To An Open Future, Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

In this paper, I examine three difficult issues raised by the Human Genome Project, and lay out an approach that takes seriously the interests of the child, present or future, while preserving the traditional commitment of professional geneticists to patient autonomy. The approach I take is based on Joel Feinberg's concept of "the child's right to an open future." In Part II, I describe the Human Genome Project, as well as the advances in assisted reproduction which give people ways to make use of the information engendered by the HGP. In Part III, I discuss the ethics of medical genetics, …

The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper discusses the process of commodification by a non-profit hospice as seen through informants and participant observation. The objective was to describe how an all-volunteer organization could transform into a business when reimbursement was introduced into the exchange equation, why it happened, and the effects the change had on the people involved. Through articles on the emergence of Northern Appalachian Studies, debates over cities such as Pittsburgh's regional identity, coalfield economic transformation, dairy farming struggles, environmental art initiatives, and alternative educational models, it examines how northern communities negotiate heritage amid social and economic change. Essays, fiction, poetry, and reviews further reflect on belonging, memory, …
