Female Identity In The Novels Of Marge Piercy, Darcy Dianne Gordon Jan 1997

Female Identity In The Novels Of Marge Piercy, Darcy Dianne Gordon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Women have traditionally formed their identity around standards created by a patriarchal society. In this way, they have often denied themselves autonomy and the process of self-discovery. With this knowledge, Marge Piercy through fiction re-imagines "the traditional female concern with personal relationships and the details of daily life and then expand (s) these concerns to include a wider and wider swath of human experience" (Snitow 719). Most of Piercy's novels intertwine politically motivated plots with female characters who reach a new conscious level of understanding about origins of identities, and thus these characters engage in an awareness that allows them …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study investigated Stanford Achievement Test (Eighth Edition) reading scores in vocabulary, comprehension, and total reading achievement. Scores were obtained from gender and socioeconomic levels (SES) of regular education fifth grade students following the use of computer assisted instruction (CAI) using Jostens Learning Corporation software. Factorial analyses of variance were performed to test the interaction between high and low socioeconomic levels (SES) of regular education students, and gender on the Stanford Achievement Scores (Eighth Edition) in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, and total reading achievement. All participants used computer assisted instruction for three years as a supplement to basal reading …

From "Sincere Gay Woman" To "Busty, Fem Biwf": A Longitudinal Test Of The Generalizations About "Lesbians", Social Class, Feminisms And Butch And Fem, Sara L. Crawley Jan 1997

From "Sincere Gay Woman" To "Busty, Fem Biwf": A Longitudinal Test Of The Generalizations About "Lesbians", Social Class, Feminisms And Butch And Fem, Sara L. Crawley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Academic and non-academic authors argue that middle-class lesbians present themselves as butch or fem less than working-class lesbians. Theorists also have argued that butch and fem were discoursed by 1970s feminist stigma but are reemerging in post-feminist decades. By analyzing "women seeking women (WSW)" personal ads, this study provides a longitudinal, quantitative analysis of the validity of these assumptions. The results suggest that middle-class lesbians were less likely to present themselves as butch or fem than working-class lesbians. Also, butch and fem were found to be much more prevalent in the 1990s than in the 1970s or 80s. Generational cohorts …

From Koje-Do To Panmunjom: The Problem Of Repatriation Of Prisoners Of War During The Korean Armistice Negotiations, Joseph H. Poles Jan 1997

From Koje-Do To Panmunjom: The Problem Of Repatriation Of Prisoners Of War During The Korean Armistice Negotiations, Joseph H. Poles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The repatriation of prisoners of war during the Korean Conflict presented the greatest problem to the armistice negotiators trying to end the fighting. Problems arose in the interpretation of various articles of the Geneva Convention of 1949 as it related to prisoners of war. The Communist interpreted these articles to mean that prisoners of war had to be repatriated back to their country of origin. The United Nations position was that the intent of the Geneva Convention meant that prisoners of war had a choice. This war within a war prolonged the Korean Conflict for more than one year. As …

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty Jan 1997

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since the late nineteenth century, scholars and historians have attributed the growth of a sensational press in Britain to long-term societal changes such as the rise of capitalism. What has been ignored, however, is the importance of individual initiative, mainly that of W. T. Stead of the Pall Mall Gazette. During the Sudan Crisis of 1883-1885, Stead introduced a new type of journalism to England that combined typographical innovations, such as maps and striking headlines, with a lively literary style. At the root of this new type of reporting were Stead's deep-felt convictions about spreading Christianity, extending the empire, and …

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti Jan 1997

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Growth management grew as a concept and policy objective in the 1970s and 1980s. The interrelationships of the state and local governments changed when Florida developed growth policy and local government implemented the policy. Nine mandatory elements to be included in a local comprehensive plan and seven mandatory concurrency elements of the 1985 Florida Growth Management Act were expensive elements for local government to implement. As a result, the issue of funding the impacts of growth drove the growth management agenda, leaving the question of compliance. The question is: Did Florida local government comply with the transportation concurrency element of …

General Education Classroom Teachers' And Music Specialists' Perceived Ability To Implement The National Standards For Music Education, Susan June Byo Jan 1997

General Education Classroom Teachers' And Music Specialists' Perceived Ability To Implement The National Standards For Music Education, Susan June Byo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to examine teacher perceptions about pertinent factors affecting the successful teaching of the National Standards for Music. Subjects were music specialists and fourth grade generalists from public elementary schools in consenting school districts from throughout the State of Florida. The two groups were administered a survey to glean opinions of the feasibility of implementing each of the nine National Standards for Music by rating seven repeated professional and resource items (contact time, resources, assistance, ability, training, interest, responsibility, and level of assistance). The summed ratings of the dependent variables (consisting of the seven professional …

Hands Off "Our" Black Men: Black Women's Discourse On Black Man/White Woman Relationships, Ronald Jules Antonin Jan 1997

Hands Off "Our" Black Men: Black Women's Discourse On Black Man/White Woman Relationships, Ronald Jules Antonin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

If black men and women, and some white women were--to some extent--successful in forming a coalition to fight some sociopolitical battles much as anti-slavery, civil rights, women's movement, etc., it appears that romantic interracial relationships--particularly between black men and white women--are on the verge of undermining this necessary coalition to "cross the bridge to the twenty-first century." Judging from three perspectives: (1) historical sexual-relations between blacks and whites; (2) the black female audience's attitude toward black man and white woman romance; and (3) media (movies and literature) portrayals of black women's reactions to black men who date or marry white …

Image Ratioing As Appropriate Technology For Monitoring Vegetation Cover In The Caribbean, Justine Louise Delahunty Jan 1997

Image Ratioing As Appropriate Technology For Monitoring Vegetation Cover In The Caribbean, Justine Louise Delahunty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Satellite image processing should not be dismissed as a tool to monitor vegetation cover because of cost concerns or classification problems due to topographic extremes. Low cost imagery and image processing software's are available and the image ratio technique can be used to minimize classification problems due to topography. The Forestry Division of St. Vincent island has minimum resources and the island's topography varies from sea level to 1,324 meters. The plight of the endemic, endangered St. Vincent Parrot (Amazona guildingii) was used as a case study. An appropriate habitat monitoring technique was formulated for the Forestry Division so that …

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman Jan 1997

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis presents the results of an empirical investigation of the applicability of genetic algorithms to a real-world problem in software reliability--the fault-prone module identification problem. The solution developed is an effective hybrid of genetic algorithms and neural networks. This approach (ENNs) was found to be superior, in terms of time, effort, and confidence in the optimality of results, to the common practice of searching manually for the best-performing net. Comparisons were made to discriminant analysis. On fault-prone, not-fault-prone, and overall classification, the lower error proportions for ENNs were found to be statistically significant. The robustness of ENNs follows from …

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri Jan 1997

Sparse Volume Array For Imaging Ocean Ambient Noise In The Near-Shore Region, Marc P. Olivieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ocean ambient noise has been studied extensively in the past, and several models have been developed to predict its level and to characterize it in different ocean environments. However, most of these studies have been motivated by the need to reduce the negative effect of the ambient noise on measurements. Recently, several studies have used the ambient noise to obtain information about the ocean floor and to achieve passive target detection. This dissertation describes the development of an Ambient Noise Sonar (ANS) which can be used to measure ambient noise directivity to obtain information about the environment. The system was …

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk Jan 1997

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Major financial newspapers and financial news programs in the United States, such as the Wall Street Journal and the Financial News Network, often mention macroeconomic data in attempting to predict a potential adjustment in the level of stock market prices. The presentation ofthis data is particularly prevalent when the level of stock market prices is in record territory. However, many believe that there exists no relationship, correlation or causal relationship between the level of stock market prices and macroeconomic indicators, especially in technologically advanced nations. The purpose ofthis paper is to test the efficiency of three international stock markets. If …

Cercla's Mistakes, John Copeland Nagle Jan 1997

Cercla's Mistakes, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) confounds every theory of statutory interpretation. Congress hurriedly enacted CERCLA during the lame-duck period following the election of President Reagan and a Republican Senate majority in November 1980 but before they took office in January 1981. The resulting statute has been criticized for its apparently textual mistakes, sparse legislative history, conflicting purposes, and questionable public policy. Courts routinely complain about the difficulty of interpreting CERCLA under those circumstances. This article reviews several of the interpretive challenges presented by CERCLA, and suggests some broader implications for statutory interpretation more generally. CERCLA, hazardous …

Welfare Magnets: The Race For The Top, F. H. Buckley, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 1997

Welfare Magnets: The Race For The Top, F. H. Buckley, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Race to the bottom explanations of welfare policies suggest that the power to set welfare payouts should be assigned to the federal government. Such theories predict that states cut benefits levels when faced with an increased demand for welfare from welfare migrants. This Article's econometric study of the determinants of AFDC payouts finds no evidence that states react in this way. This suggests that states should be accorded the power to curtail welfare payments to new arrivals through residency requirements, an issue left as moot in Anderson v. Green.

Of Characterization And Other Matters: Thoughts About Multiple Damages, G. Robert Blakey Jan 1997

Of Characterization And Other Matters: Thoughts About Multiple Damages, G. Robert Blakey

Journal Articles

Modern economic analysis owes too much to the conceit of Bentham and his followers in their arrogant reliance on disembodied reason. In fact, they have "shaped the course of law reform" for large segments of the modern world; unfortunately, they "neglected all the complex social evolution which ... [went into] the making of... [that] world and individuals" in it; and for that "reason..., they considered that the study of history was a matter of minor importance." Bentham and his many followers too often tend to rely on a handful of assumptions and reason alone–coupled with a veneer of mathematics–to describe …

Never Again: Questioning The Yugoslav And Rwanda Tribunals, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Never Again: Questioning The Yugoslav And Rwanda Tribunals, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

Fifty years after Nuremberg, the international community has again decided to experiment with international war crimes tribunals. The stated purpose for the establishment of both the Yugoslav and Rwanda Tribunals by the United Nations are to “put an end” to serious crimes such as genocide and to “take effective measures to bring to justice the persons who are responsible for them.” This piece argues that both assumptions are unrealistic and that such tribunals will have little or no effect on human rights violations of such enormous barbarity. In addition, this piece questions the motivations behind the formulation of the tribunals …

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article is a critique of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. It explores the assumptions employed by the African National Congress and the international community to construct a post-apartheid society. It argues that the reliance on the law as the key medium for economic, social, and political change was insufficient to transform the legacy of apartheid. Instead, the piece contends that apartheid was privatized and its beneficiaries protected under the new dispensation. It makes the argument that the lot of the black majority is unlikely to be changed such gradualist approach to social change.

The Secret Lives Of The Four Horsemen, Barry Cushman Jan 1997

The Secret Lives Of The Four Horsemen, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

"Outlined against red velvet drapery on the first Monday of October, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction, and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Van Devanter, McReynolds, Sutherland, and Butler. They formed the crest of the reactionary cyclone before which yet another progressive statute was swept over the precipice yesterday morning as a packed courtroom of spectators peered up at the bewildering panorama spread across the mahogany bench above." Or so Grantland Rice might have written, had he been a legal realist. For more than two generations scholars …

Examining The Problem Of Power In Divorce Mediation: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Shelley Lynne Hermer Jan 1997

Examining The Problem Of Power In Divorce Mediation: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Shelley Lynne Hermer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

How problematic is power imbalance in divorce mediation? Research in the last fifteen years has drawn attention to this issue, resulting in criticisms levelled at mediation from women’s groups, lawyers and others. Using six in-depth interviews with Ontario divorce mediators, this study examined power imbalance and its management. Three main themes emerged from the findings related to power: (1) the ‘emotional readiness’ of the couple, (2) the effects of the legal system, in particular, the relationships with lawyers, and, (3) physical intimidation and financial intimidation. Techniques employed by the mediators were similar across the interviews. These findings led to a …

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister Jan 1997

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister

Journal Articles

The word "appropriate" is so wildly overused in American culture that, as with other vacuous words and phrases, a person learns to read right through it. "Appropriate" is verbal tofu. This Essay pauses instead of reading through, particularly to notice the instances in which "appropriate" and its negative counterpart are used to give the appearance of a moral or legal judgment.

"Appropriate," chosen to express a legal judgment, is not only vacuous; it is also irresponsible. It catches the legislator, judge, or administrator in the act of passing the buck, as the President did when he ordered the Justice Department …

Property Distribution Physics: The Talisman Of Time And Middle Class Law, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 1997

Property Distribution Physics: The Talisman Of Time And Middle Class Law, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Should the young professional's spouse get some share in a newly acquired career while the young military officer's will not? Does the division between alimony and property make any sense, given no-fault divorce? Is reimbursement for lost career opportunities plus a share in the couple's tangible property fair compensation for a divorcing spouse? Such difficult questions frame this piece, which will also—and I believe necessarily—digress into the nature of marriage, the duties of parenting, and modern divorce philosophy.
