Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr.
Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The use and storage of hazardous chemicals at U.S. military facilities often adversely affect the groundwater when contaminants infiltrate the subsurface as a result of leaks and accidental spills. These contaminants, if not located and remediated in a relatively short time, may move and settle unpredictably, essentially creating a source some distance from the original leak or spill. An example of this phenomenon is found with migrating dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminants. Although various methods for estimating the present day locations of these migrated contaminants are in use, accurately pinpointing the source of contaminants remains a difficult problem in …

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell
Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Much of the scholarly debate about hate crime laws focuses on a discussion of their constitutionality under the First Amendment. Part of larger empirical study of police methods of investigating hate crimes, this Note attempts to shift thinking in this area beyond the existing debate over the constitutionality of hate crime legislation to a discussion of how low-level criminal justice personnel, such as the police, enforce hate crime laws. This Note argues that, since hate crimes are an area in which police have great discretion in enforcing the law, their understanding of the First Amendment and how it relates to …
The Self-Graded Draft: Teaching Students To Revise Using Self-Critique, Mary Beth Beazley
The Self-Graded Draft: Teaching Students To Revise Using Self-Critique, Mary Beth Beazley
Scholarly Works
In this article, Professor Beazley first explains why the predictability of legal documents, legal writers, and legal readers makes an objective method of self-critique particularly useful in legal writing. She then discusses how she designs self-grading guidelines and explains various methods for incorporating the self-grading process into a legal writing course. Finally, she addresses some of the challenges she faced when assigning the self-graded draft to students, and discusses ways to deal with these challenges. In appendixes, Professor Beazley included two samples of self-graded draft guidelines for use in a three-draft Memorandum Assignment, as well as a short illustration of …

Home Visiting: The Effect Of A Hospital Based Nurse Home Visiting Programme On The Rehabilitation Of Children Following Their Discharge From A Child Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, Gordon H. Peers
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a nurse home visiting programme on the rehabilitation of children following their discharge from a dedicated child psychiatry hospital. The research was based on the premise that a nurse home visiting programme may have a positive influence on the outcomes of the rehabilitation of children following their discharge from hospital, if it reduced the need of outpatient appointments with the psychiatrist and the need for children to be re-admitted to hospital.
The Association Of Student Perceptions With Student Motivation And Cognitive Engagement In The Year 11 Economic Framework Unit, Leah Gransden
The Association Of Student Perceptions With Student Motivation And Cognitive Engagement In The Year 11 Economic Framework Unit, Leah Gransden
Theses : Honours
Many Western Australian Economics teachers have voiced concern with the level of motivation of students studying Economics and the apparent decline in the number of students in secondary institutions choosing Economics as an upper school subject (Lewis & Norris, 1996). A need therefore seems to exist for data about secondary students' thoughts and feelings towards Economics. This exploratory study aimed to investigate and describe student perceptions, motivational orientations and cognitive engagement, as experienced by Year 11 Economic students when studying the Economic Framework unit. This unit is the only compulsory unit in Year 11 Economics and is typically associated with …

Theses : Honours
This project and research has resulted in the development of a World Wide Web (WWW) based testing system. WEBassess can be accessed and used from any point in the world that has a connection to the WWW. The WEBassess system allows for the creation and completion of tests through the WWW interface. Scoring and feedback of submitted tests is completely automated, allowing students to see their test result immediately, including visual indicators for correct and incorrect answers. These test results may then be viewed by academic staff, showing complete test details, such as unit code, test title, score, percentage, date …
Ritual And Pedagogy : Teachers' Use Of Ritual In Pre-Primary Classroom Settings, Carmel Maloney
Ritual And Pedagogy : Teachers' Use Of Ritual In Pre-Primary Classroom Settings, Carmel Maloney
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Pre-primary teachers' daily organisation and routines are established through repetitive patterns of actions which become highly ritualised. This study examines how pre-primary teachers use ritual and how ritual structures teaching in pre-primary classroom settings and in doing so serves a pedagogical purpose for teachers. Describing forms and functions of ritual provides a way of examining and interpreting what teachers know and do and how they go about their work. The interpretive paradigm of qualitative methodology has been adopted for the study. Participant observation and structured interviews are used as the primary methods of conducting field work and collecting data. The …

Teaching Visual Arts Through Distance Education : An Evaluation Of The Program Anyone Can Draw, Jane Whelan
Teaching Visual Arts Through Distance Education : An Evaluation Of The Program Anyone Can Draw, Jane Whelan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The problem under investigation is concerned with the teaching of drawing through distance education. Traditionally drawing has occupied a central position in visual art teaching and learning and is still regarded as a significant area of visual arts education. In the visual arts curriculum of Western Australia, drawing, which is included in the broader term visual inquiry, is regarded as the foundation for studio practice. It is therefore appropriate to include drawing as part of every visual arts teaching program. The correspondence mode of teaching, which has a text-base, is a more formal style of teaching art than the responsive …

A Simple Scenario For Stygobitization In Stenobermuda Schultz, 1978 (Isopoda Asellota Stenetriidae), With Description Of A New Species From Andros Island, Bahamas, Lazare Botosaneanu, Thomas M. Iliffe
International Journal of Speleology
Description of a new stygobitic and troglomorphic species of Stenobermuda from a Blue Hole in the Bahamas, is an opportunity for speculation about hypogean colonization by this and by another cave-dwelling species from Bermuda, starting from populations of a widely distributed Western Atlantic shallow water marine species.
Les Deux Faces De La Pensée De E. A. Martel, Jacques Choppy
Les Deux Faces De La Pensée De E. A. Martel, Jacques Choppy
International Journal of Speleology
The Significance Of E. A. Martel For Speleology In Slovenia, Andrej Kranjc
The Significance Of E. A. Martel For Speleology In Slovenia, Andrej Kranjc
International Journal of Speleology
Three times Martel visited karst in Carniola: in 1879, 1893 and 1896. The importance of his visits and later publications lies in fact that he informed the francophone public about our karst and caves; his visit stimulated the introduction of new technical means into the then Austrian speleology (folding boat, portable telephone); in 1893 due to his researches Postojnska jama became the longest cave in Europe; public found out about existence of caving society Anthron, which was the first Slovene and Slav society of the kind; he set up the foundations of international speleological co-operation and included into it Austrian …
Taking Care Of Our Daughters, Katharine K. Baker
Taking Care Of Our Daughters, Katharine K. Baker
Cardozo Law Review
In The Neutered Mother, The Sexual Family and Other Twentieth Century Tragedies, Martha Fineman gives a powerful critique of the traditional family and proposes an innovative model for change. In the course of her critique, Fineman reveals a number of important truths. Primary among these truths are (1) that dependency begets dependency; (2) that equality rhetoric and practice are vacuous vehicles for justice in a world in which differing degrees of dependency beget different ability; (3) that the privacy and silence of dependency is crucial to patriarchy's construction of the family. Dependencies are created every time a baby is …
