A Design In Interfacing The Mc68hc11 To The Amd Am29f010 Flash Memory Chips, David H. Hands Jan 1997

A Design In Interfacing The Mc68hc11 To The Amd Am29f010 Flash Memory Chips, David H. Hands

Theses : Honours

In many environments, motion, vibration and contamination to the Secondary Storage Devices such as hard drives can cause data to become unreadable or even lost. Elimination of these types of magnetic drives, incorporating its replacement with a Solid State Memory Storage Device would provide an invaluable solution for these type of environments. If a secondary storage system could replace these electro-mechanical disk drive systems incorporating a Solid State Secondary Storage Device such as the Flash Memory Integrated Chips, an increase in the speed of reading from milli-seconds to nano-seconds would transpire as well as providing a robust Secondary Storage Device. …

The Effect Of Stress At The Retrieval Stage Of Eyewitness Recall, Mary-Anne Martin Jan 1997

The Effect Of Stress At The Retrieval Stage Of Eyewitness Recall, Mary-Anne Martin

Theses : Honours

Although stress at the encoding stage of eyewitness memory has been studied in depth in the literature, little is known about the recall stage. Stress effects on retrieval were investigated in two experiments to examine its impact on recall, repeated testing, and accuracy. Stress was manipulated by evaluative threat and time pressure at either immediate and/or delayed recall (20 minutes) in four experimental conditions in Experiment I. Participants were 62 undergraduate students from Edith Cowan University. A series of 40 pictures, five to a slide, were shown by overhead projector at the rate of 20 seconds per slide. There were …

An Investigation Into The Australian Position On Software Copyright, Nicholas Pinakis Jan 1997

An Investigation Into The Australian Position On Software Copyright, Nicholas Pinakis

Theses : Honours

Copyright Is the primary means most software authors seek to protect their software. Software, that is work (the ordered expression of thought) put into some tangible form (such a being written down, stored in a computer, programs, data and distributed files) is a truly international product. Where does this copyright protection come from? The current governing laws in Australia are the Australian Copyright Act of 1968 (Cwlth) and the Australian Copyright Amendments Act 1984 (Cwlth) which afford copyright protection to computer software. In copyright law, a number of words and terms have specialised meanings, which are different to their meanings …

The Role Of Trust And The Victim-Offender Relationship, Gail Della Torre Jan 1997

The Role Of Trust And The Victim-Offender Relationship, Gail Della Torre

Theses : Honours

It has been argued that trust is a moral value inherent in all relationships, however the moral obligation to keep trust is stronger in close relationships than in contractual type relationships. This study examined the effects of breach of trust for two crimes (rape and theft) occurring within two types of relationships (social relationship and employer-employee relationship). Trust was demonstrated by the victim agreeing to the offender entering her property because of his position (husband or lawnmower man). A second independent variable was victim risk which was manipulated by the victim either inviting the offender inside the house, or not. …

Senior Teacher Classification For Teacher-Librarians In Western Australian Catholic Schools : An Investigation, Kathryn L. Salt

Theses : Honours

This research study utilised the principles of Survey Research to determine the current knowledge base and status of teacher-librarians employed in Western Australian Catholic schools in relation to Senior Teacher classification. It also examines the perceived barriers to achieving Senior Teacher classification. The questionnaire Senior Teacher Classification for Teacher-Librarians (STCTL) was constructed and mailed to every Catholic primary and secondary school throughout Western Australia for completion by the teacher-librarian. A 70.45 per cent response rate was received (93 respondents). The primary statistical analysis method used was descriptive statistics; frequencies, percents, means, modes and standard deviations. Based on the data analysis …

The Ms. Stereotype : Could It Be A Health Risk?, Phillip Van Der Klift Jan 1997

The Ms. Stereotype : Could It Be A Health Risk?, Phillip Van Der Klift

Theses : Honours

Two studies extend previous findings of stereotyping (a) within the nursing context (Ganong, 1993; Ganong & Coleman, 1992, Ganong et al., 1988), and (b) in relation to female title of address (Dion, 1987; Dion & Cota, 1991; Dion & Schuller, 1991; Heilder, 1975). Against the theoretical background of person perception theory and its influence upon the therapeutic nurse client relationship, study 1 investigates the extent to which nurses' stereotype a vignetted female client on the basis of title of address. Fifty registered nurses from two hospitals rated their impressions and subsequent expectations of a vignetted client on the First Impressions …

Teachers' Attitudes Towards Using Individual Education Plans In The Regular Classroom For Students With Specific Learning Difficulties, Nicola Davis Jan 1997

Teachers' Attitudes Towards Using Individual Education Plans In The Regular Classroom For Students With Specific Learning Difficulties, Nicola Davis

Theses : Honours

Western Australia schools are now encouraged to provide education for an increasingly wider diversity of students and referral to special classes is less common place than it was in the past(EDWA, 1993). As a consequence the responsibility for teaching these students with disabilities, who were once eligible for education support has been given to the regular classroom teacher. This study focused on teachers' attitudes towards using Individual Education Plans for students with specific learning difficulties in regular Western Australian primary classrooms. A sample of 300 regular metropolitan classroom teachers was randomly selected from regular primary schools and Priority School Program …

Cd-Rom Storybooks: Reading Strategies Of Learners Of English As A Second Language, Marie Beardsell Jan 1997

Cd-Rom Storybooks: Reading Strategies Of Learners Of English As A Second Language, Marie Beardsell

Theses : Honours

Technology has had a huge impact on pedagogy and this impact is increasing with more educationally sound computer software becoming available. CD-ROM storybooks are an example of such software, and this study was an attempt to discover how beneficial these computerised books are, to the reading strategies of English as a second language (ESL) learners. The subjects of this study were eight ESL learners from grades 3 and 4 of primary school (five female and three male). Four subjects were born in Australia, and the remaining four were born overseas. However, all subjects were exposed to a language other than …

A Study Of Biochemical And Haematological Variables With Performance In Showjumping Horses, Darren B. Simmons Jan 1997

A Study Of Biochemical And Haematological Variables With Performance In Showjumping Horses, Darren B. Simmons

Theses : Honours

This honours project examined the biochemical and haematological changes induced by exercise in the showjumping horse to determine whether a relationship exists between these values and performance. To complete this study 7 geldings and 1 stallion who were considered competition fit by their trainers were subjected to 2 forms of exercise. The first phase of this study involved an incremental exercise test performed at the Byford City Council horse training facility. The horses were cantered/galloped around a 1300m all weather training track at velocities of 6, 8, 10, and 12 m/sec for a duration of 2 minutes for each workload. …

Foreword, Katharine B. Silbaugh Jan 1997

Foreword, Katharine B. Silbaugh

This special section of The Boston University Public Interest Law Journal addresses the issue of transracial adoptions. Few topics within family law generate as much controversy as the placement of Black or other minority and mixed race children for adoption with white families. Although transracial placement could in theory apply to the placement of white children with mixed race and Black families, in practice it has not. The predominant practice of matching adoptive children with adoptive parents of the same race has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years as many older and difficult to place minority children wait in …

The study investigated the concerns and perceptions of parents of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD). Parental concerns regarding behaviors, skill deficits, and settings were identified as well as the helpfulness of interventions and professionals. The Parent Perception Opinionnaire for Parents of Children and Adolescents with ADHD was constructed. Data were collected from 112 members of a parent support group. The data were summarized according to ages 8 and less (primary), ages 9 through 11 (intermediate) and ages 12 through 17 (secondary). The highest ranked concerns of parents were symptoms of inattention, distractibility and hyperactivity. Regarding skills deficits, highest concerns …

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski Jan 1997

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral and mental health approaches to consultation differ in theoretical foundation, interpersonal interaction style of the consultant, and identified source of problem assessment, interventions, and decision-making. These consultation approaches may yield different levels of consultation effectiveness. Studies conducted to date have not consistently found differences between these approaches in terms of consultation effectiveness. However, there have been methodological flaws in these studies. In order to determine if either approach yields better outcomes, a means of assessing consultation orientation (i.e., the theoretical approach endorsed by a psychologist) must be developed. The School-based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale (SCORS) was designed to measure …

Truth Or Consequences: A Study Of Critical Issues And Decision Making In Accounting, Annetta M. Gibson, Albert H. Frakes Jan 1997

Truth Or Consequences: A Study Of Critical Issues And Decision Making In Accounting, Annetta M. Gibson, Albert H. Frakes

Faculty Publications

This study applies a theoretical framework, the theory of reasoned action, to the examination of unethical decision making in job-related situations encountered by CPAs. A survey methodology was employed in which respondents were asked to use both self-reported and randomized response techniques for reporting unethical behavior. The results indicate that individuals are unwilling to accurately report either unethical behavior or intention, particularly in situations where there is no question as to the unacceptability of the action or the potential penalty as presented in the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct. Implications for the accounting profession and research are discussed.

Evaluation Of Rainbows, A Program Designed To Assist Bereaved Children In The Grieving Process, Caroline G. O'Shannassy Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Rainbows, A Program Designed To Assist Bereaved Children In The Grieving Process, Caroline G. O'Shannassy

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There are many children who have suffered the loss of a parent through death or divorce/separation. Generally, people expect children to "carry on" while such traumatic events in their lives take place. Bereaved parents may send their children back to school as soon as possible after the death. In the case of divorce/ separation, the child attends school while the trauma unfolds on a day-to- day basis. Bereaved and distressed parents are often unaware of their children's grief and unable to give the support that the children need. Parents are likely to deny, on many occasions, that the children have …

Crime, Community Penalty And Integration With Legal Formalism In The South Pacific, Mark Findlay Jan 1997

Crime, Community Penalty And Integration With Legal Formalism In The South Pacific, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The influence of introduced legality on prevailing culture, and vice versa, are common concerns for analysis when considering the existence and development of customary law. Much of the limited writing on law and custom prefers to speculate on the impact of introduced law on already present modes of regulation. While recognising these structuralist contexts of influence, often oversimplified as they are represented, this paper prefers to explore the adaptation of legal formalism in contexts of resilient and resonant custom.Further, the paper examines instances where despite the fact that custom has modified institutional legality, the latter claims predominance over culture or …

Comment On 'Profits Derived From Breach Of Contract Or Restitution', Howard Hunter Jan 1997

Comment On 'Profits Derived From Breach Of Contract Or Restitution', Howard Hunter

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is little with which to disagree in Professor Waddams' paper on the categorisation of damage recoveries in the cases posited, viz, those involving a breach which results in benefit to the breaching party but no loss of any consequence to the nonbreaching party. If the goal of contract remedies is to compensate the plaintiff for loss, then, presumably, there should be no recovery at all in such cases. At most there might be nominal damages to compensate for some transaction costs or perhaps as a ’declaration of rights’. In some of the cases considered by Waddams, breach might be …

Authentic Learning In Interactive Multimedia Environments, Janice A. Herrington Jan 1997

Authentic Learning In Interactive Multimedia Environments, Janice A. Herrington

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The instructional technology community is in the midst of a philosophical shift from a behaviourist to a constructivist framework, a move that may begin to address the growing rift between formal school learning and real-life learning. One theory of learning which has the capacity to promote authentic learning is that of situated learning. The purpose of the study was to investigate the way students learn from an interactive multimedia package and learning environment based on a situated learning model. To do this, it was necessary to identify the critical characteristics of a situated learning model based on the extensive literature …

Secondary Arts Teachers' Perceptions Of Integrated Arts, Jeanette Giroud Jan 1997

Secondary Arts Teachers' Perceptions Of Integrated Arts, Jeanette Giroud

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

During the 1980s, research in the arts by Project Zero and Arts Propel revealed that in American schooling the areas of artistic intelligence and artistic education had been neglected. Gardner (1989) proposed a theory of multiple intelligences, suggesting that in addition to the linguistic and logical-mathematical forms, there are a number of distinct forms of intelligence that each individual may possess in varying degrees. The concept of multiple intelligences as opposed to "talent" in an art form offers the opportunity to view arts education in a new light. The original purpose of Arts Propel was to assess artistic potential in …

International Market Opportunities For Faba Beans, Andrew Quinn, Malcolm Sedgwick Jan 1997

International Market Opportunities For Faba Beans, Andrew Quinn, Malcolm Sedgwick

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

Western Australian faba bean production is growing and export volumes are increasing. In contrast, production is declining in many of the world's traditional faba bean regions. World trade, however, is growing.

China dominates the world export market and is growing rapidly as an exporter. The UK and Australia are the second and third largest exporters respectively.

As Western Australian production increases, the State will increasingly play an important role in Australia's ability to supply faba beans into markets looking tor quality and stable supply.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as the State's largest export market. The State is well located to …

Resource Management Decision Support Tools - Brief Model Descriptions, Campbell White & Associates Pty Ltd Jan 1997

Resource Management Decision Support Tools - Brief Model Descriptions, Campbell White & Associates Pty Ltd

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

During the past 10 years, a number of financial models have been developed within Agriculture Western Australia to assist decision making in resource management. Various approaches have been taken including whole farm, development and partial budgets.

Natural resource managers within Agriculture Western Australia, have identified a need to preserve these decision support systems in a central library. The models should be readily accessible to new staff, and the library should provide an 'engine' through which the models can be promoted, and information relating their application distributed. Recent technology such as the development and mainstream adoption of the World Wide Web …

The Parents' Experience Of Living In The Hospital With Their Sick Infant : A Phenomenological Study, Anne Bourke Jan 1997

The Parents' Experience Of Living In The Hospital With Their Sick Infant : A Phenomenological Study, Anne Bourke

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the essential structure of the lived experience of what it was to be a resident parent on the ward in a public hospital with a sick infant. Many studies have highlighted both benefits and problems associated with the concept of parental participation in care. The role of the parents in hospital needs to be identified and expressed by both the parents and the nurses, in order to ellucidate the needs of parents who live in with their sick infant. Eight parents were interviewed regarding their experiences of "living in" the hospital …

Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin Jan 1997

Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years several policy changes have occurred in Western Australia regarding the provision of pre-compulsory education, particularly for children turning five. These changes have led to education of such children centred largely in full-time, on-site classes rather than in sessional, independent community centres, resulting in pre-primary education becoming mainstream school business. As such it is incorporated in the administrative, managerial and educational policies of the school including school development planning. The school development plan (SDP), a major tool of accountability within the school, provides a planning framework in selected priority areas in which methods of assessment and evaluation of …
