The Impact Of A Silvopastoral Agroforestry System, Maria Penn Jan 1997

The Impact Of A Silvopastoral Agroforestry System, Maria Penn

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

There is increasing pressure in the UK to adopt alternative, sustainable uses for agricultural land. New schemes indicate a trend towards lowland afforestation schemes which are a very new concept in Britain. One such scheme is agroforestry whereby trees and a crop are grown together on the same unit of land. Very little is known about the impact of agroforestry on soil hydrology and soil water nitrate distribution of trees planted at a regular spacing into grazed grassland. In this case a lowland grazed silvopastoral agroforestry system in Devon, UK, was monitored to determine the impact upon the soil by …

Predicament Of The New Primary Teacher : Educating Teachers As Intellectuals In Changing Times, Roderick Mackenzie

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is based on a case study of the predicament of new primary teachers in a time of rapid and multiple change. It examines the proposal that emerging teachers should be supported as intellectuals in responding to the inherited collision of education policy and practice within postmodernity. Action research methodology was employed to investigate a small scale attempt to support student teachers as intellectuals in their final period of the BEd. Some participants were followed into the first year of teaching, using an ethnographic and autoethnographic methodology to evaluate and elaborate the initial proposal. The study shows that emerging …

Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss Jan 1997

Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss

School of Psychology Theses

The aim of this programme of research was to investigate the differences between individuals in their psychological adjustment to perceived abnormalities of appearance. The first phase of the research was to refine and validate a measure of distress and dysfunction associated with having an appearance which is different from normal. Over 500 patients in plastic reconstructive surgery units were recruited as participants in a nationwide multi-centre trial. The resulting measure, the Derriford Appearance Scale 24r was shown to have good psychometric properties, and was used as a criterion measure of adjustment. A series of clinical interviews were conducted with contrasting …

A Study Exploring The Nature And Effect Of Interactions In Play Between Carers And Children With Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome And Typical Development, Jan Payne

School of Psychology Theses

An observational study with an emergent design of two parts, consisting of quantitative and qualitative analysis, looked at communicative interactions between carers and children. The children were drawn from three groups: Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome and typically developing. The first part of the study utilised a secondary data set of observations of play sessions of carers with children who have Cerebral Palsy and carers of children with typical development. A continuous observational data-logging method of four verbal and six non-verbal behaviours was piloted and used with this data, and also used with observations of a further research group of carers …
