Cross-Talk Between Adherens Junctions And Desmosomes Depends On Plakoglobin, Jani E. Lewis, James K. Wahl Iii, Kristin M. Sass, Pamels J. Jensen, Pamela J. Johnson, Margaret J. Wheelock

Biology

Squamous epithelial cells have both adherens junctions and desmosomes. The ability of these cells to organize the desmosomal proteins into a functional structure depends upon their ability first to organize an adherens junction. Since the adherens junction and the desmosome are separate structures with different molecular make up, it is not immediately obvious why formation of an adherens junction is a prerequisite for the formation of a desmosome. The adherens junction is composed of a transmembrane classical cadherin (E-cadherin and/or P-cadherin in squamous epithelial cells) linked to either β-catenin or plakoglobin, which is linked to α-catenin, which is linked to …

Reactions Of Filipino Business Students To Advocacy Advertising, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr. Jan 1997

Reactions Of Filipino Business Students To Advocacy Advertising, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr.

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Advertising is a major social and economic force in society. It influences the lives of many people like housewives, professionals, teenagers, young adults, and even kids. It is the "world's greatest teaching system" and "the greatest artistic force of the 20th century." Being so, advertising can therefore "teach" the public on steps to take regarding certain contemporary issues like family planning, drug addiction, anti-smoking, environmental protection, energy conservation, and the promotion of desirable human values. This phenomenon is popularly known as advocacy advertising.

A Computerized Adaptive Testing System For Speech Discrimination Measurement: The Speech Sound Pattern Discrimination Test, Joseph Bochner, Wayne Garrison, Linda Palmer, Douglas Mackenzie, Amy Braveman

School of Education

A computerized, adaptive test-delivery system for the measurement of speech discrimination, the Speech Sound Pattern Discrimination Test, is described and evaluated. Using a modified discrimination task, the testing system draws on a pool of 130 items spanning a broad range of difficulty to estimate an examinee's location along an underlying continuum of speech processing ability, yet does not require the examinee to possess a high level of English language proficiency. The system is driven by a mathematical measurement model which selects only test items which are appropriate in difficulty level for a given examinee, thereby individualizing the testing experience. Test …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DONALD WAYNE VINEY offers convincing examples that far from being the dour, unsmiling figure often presented of Christ, He exhibited a full range of emotions, including humor upon occasion. Associate Professor of Philosophy at Pittsburg State University, Viney is author of Charles Hartshorne and the Existence of God (1985), A Philosopher Looks at the Bible (1992), and several articles in the philosophy of religion and metaphysics. He is also a member of Midwest Quarterly's Board of Editors.

JOHN E. ATWELL examines the writings of Arthur Schopenhauer and finds his views on women more complex than the common portrayal of the …

Lived Experiences Of Male Nursing Students With Caring., Patricia Jean Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fifteen male nursing students from four baccalaureate nursing schools in West Virginia participated in this phenomenological study. The phenomena of interest was the lived experiences of male student nurses related to caring. Demographic data was obtained in the interview process. Semistructured interview questions were used in the individual interviews, which were all audiotaped. The methodology used was based on the Swanson-Kauffman and Schonwald method, which entailed the four step process of bracketing, analyzing, intuiting, and describing. Five themes were identified. The Primacy of Caring was the first theme. Characteristics of caring, the origins of caring, the lived experiences of caring …
