Examining What Should Be The Role Of An "Internationalized" Land Grant Extension System, Barbara G. Ludwig, R. Kirby Barrick Jan 1997

Examining What Should Be The Role Of An "Internationalized" Land Grant Extension System, Barbara G. Ludwig, R. Kirby Barrick

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics that will describe an internationalized state extension system. The study used a modified Delphi technique to explore and describe the characteristics of an internationalized state extension system. By consensus of the Delphi Panel, five critical elements were identified. Extension systems can use these as criteria to make initial assessments on the level of internationalization present.

The Effects Of Protection On The Patter Of Trade: A Disaggregated Analysis (A), Jon D. Haveman, U. C. Nair, Jerry Thursby

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We analyze the effects of protection using disaggregated data. This permits analysis of distinct effects of tariffs and NTBs on trade. Our analysis indicates that tariffs tend to shift trade towards larger exporters. We find significant trade diversion caused by tariffs. In the case of NTBs, we find quantitative barriers are more likely to raise prices than are price restrictions. Quantity barriers appear to lead exporters to concentrate on higher priced varieties. We do not find much evidence to suggest that countries not targeted by an NTB gain at the expense of targeted countries. We find that NTBs tend to …

Currency Boards, Expectations And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson Jan 1997

Currency Boards, Expectations And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Adopting the exchange rate as a nominal anchor for monetary stabilization has proved costly in a number of countries as inflationary inertia produces severe real exchange rate appreciation. What causes inflation persistence? Complementary to existing explanation such as staggered contracts and low credibility, we note that the introduction of a new monetary rule, such as a fixed exchange rate reduces inflationary expectations immediately to the target level only if all agents understand the implications of the rule.

Shareholder Wealth Effects On Joint Venture Termination: A Transaction Cost Analysis, J. J. Reuer Jan 1997

Shareholder Wealth Effects On Joint Venture Termination: A Transaction Cost Analysis, J. J. Reuer

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Managing joint venture (JV transitions can have implications for parent firm performance as JVs become important, albeit temporary, instruments of firms' corporate and international strategies. This study examines the average shareholder wealth effects of five specific types of JV termination. Empirical evidence from U.S. firms terminating domestic and international JVs reveals venture termination neither positively nor negatively influences firm value on average, and no one type of JV termination is superior to its alternatives in general.

Measurement Of Perceived Environmental Uncertainties: Response And Extension, K. D. Miller Jan 1997

Measurement Of Perceived Environmental Uncertainties: Response And Extension, K. D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Miller (1993) presented an instrument for measuring managers' perceptions of the environmental uncertainties relevant to international business. Application of this instrument by Werner, Brouthers, and Brouthers (1996), led them to suggest an alternative measurement instrument. This study applies confirmatory factor analysis to examine the reliability and discriminant validity of these alternatives PEU scales.

Economic Lessons Of The Kobe Earthquake, G. Horwich Jan 1997

Economic Lessons Of The Kobe Earthquake, G. Horwich

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The earthquake that struck the Japanese port city of Kobe on January 17, 1995, was the most severe quake ever to strike a modern urban area. It has become the most studied, analyzed, and discussed natural disaster in history. What I propose to add to this dialogue is an economist's overview of what he saw in Kobe 19 months after the event and what he learned during the ensuing 6 months.

What Can We Learn From Bilateral Trade? Gravity And Beyond, Jon Haveman, David L. Hummels Jan 1997

What Can We Learn From Bilateral Trade? Gravity And Beyond, Jon Haveman, David L. Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Much empirical international trade reserach requires a careful analysis of bilateral trade patterns. In this paper we examine a commonly used technique called the gravity equation. Though the use of the gravity equation on aggregate data is well-grounded in monopolistic competition trade theory, we show that central predictions necessary for its derivation can be rejected with simple tests on disaggregated data

Rational Speculators And Exchange Rate Volatility, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Olser Jan 1997

Rational Speculators And Exchange Rate Volatility, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Olser

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper suggests a structural connection between rational speculative activity and exchange rate volatility. We note that, when Friedman originally claimed that rational speculators must smooth exchange rate, he excluded interest rate differentials form his interpretation of speculator behavior. If interest rates matter, rational speculators could sometimes violate Friedman's description, and buy a currency whose value is relatively high or sell a currency whose value is low.

Reflection Anistropy Spectroscopy Study Of The Near Surface Electric Field In Low-Temperature Grown Gaas (001), Todd Holden, Fred H. Pollak, J. L. Freeouf, D. Mcinturff, J. L. Gray, Mark S. Lundstrom, J. M. Woodall

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We have evaluated an ‘‘effective depletion width’’ of =< 45 Å and the sign (n-type/upward band bending) of the near surface electric field in low-temperature grown GaAs ~001! using the optical method of reflection anisotropy spectroscopy in the vicinity of the spin-orbit split E1 , E1 + Delta1 optical features. Our results provide evidence that surface Fermi level pinning occurs for air exposed (001) surfaces of undoped low temperature grown GaAs.

Technique For Measurement Of The Minority Carrier Mobility With A Bipolar Junction Transistor, S. L. D'Souza, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, E. S. Harmon Jan 1997

Technique For Measurement Of The Minority Carrier Mobility With A Bipolar Junction Transistor, S. L. D'Souza, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, E. S. Harmon

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A simple technique to measure the minority carrier mobility using a bipolar junction transistor is demonstrated. By fixing the base-emitter voltage, the carrier injection into the base is constant. The collector current is then monitored as a function of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the current transport across the base. The magnetic field leads to an increase in base transit time and a corresponding decrease in collector current. From the resulting fractional change in collector current, the minority carrier mobility in the base can be determined. For narrow base transistors, quasiballistic transport across the base must be taken into …

Electrical Characteristics Of Nearly Relaxed Inas/Gap Heterojunctions, E H. Chen, T. P. Chin, J. M. Woodall, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1997

Electrical Characteristics Of Nearly Relaxed Inas/Gap Heterojunctions, E H. Chen, T. P. Chin, J. M. Woodall, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The electrical properties of lattice mismatched InAs/GaP heterojunctions are examined. In spite of a high dislocation density at the heterointerface, the current versus voltage characteristics show nearly ideal behavior with low reverse leakage currents and high breakdown voltages. The forward currentvaried exponentially with bias displaying ideal factors of 1.10 or less. Band offsets estimated from current–voltage and capacitance–voltage analysis are consistent with previous estimates based on differences in Schottky barrier heights.

A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis Of A Statewide Fiscal Reform: The Case Of Michigan's 1993-3 Property Tax Reform, Buagu G. Ndugga Musazi Jan 1997

A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis Of A Statewide Fiscal Reform: The Case Of Michigan's 1993-3 Property Tax Reform, Buagu G. Ndugga Musazi

Wayne State University Dissertations

A computable general equilibrium model analyzes the tax effects of simultaneously reducing property taxes by 44 percent and increasing the rate of sales taxation from four to six percent in Michigan in 1994. The dissertation fills the void in the literature for empirical regional computable general equilibrium models. It adds some numerical flesh to the existing general equilibrium analytical frameworks by Courant (1977) Henderson (1985), McLure (1969) and Kimbell, Shih and Shulman (1979). Most analytical frameworks use the "New View" theory of property tax incidence where property taxes, in an economy with fixed capital, are "profit-taxes" on capital rather than …

Affirmative Action California Style—Proposition 209: The Right Message While Avoiding A Fatal Constitutional Attraction Because Of Race And Sex, L. Darnell Weeden

Seattle University Law Review

This Article will analyze the Equal Protection Clause in relation to the government's ability to classify and will discuss whether race is a prohibited classification. The author will closely critique the case of Coalition For Economic Equity v. Wilson, which challenges the constitutionality of Proposition 209 because of its political burdens on interests important to racial minorities and women. The author will argue that Proposition 209's Equal Protection standard should be illicit state action rather than political burdens. Finally, the author will critique the Wilson court's understanding of violations of the Equal Protection Clause. This understanding is rejected here …

Comparative Development Of The Turkey And Chicken Embryo From Cleavage Through Hypoblast Formation, M. R. Bakst, S. K. Gupta, V. Akuffo Jan 1997

Comparative Development Of The Turkey And Chicken Embryo From Cleavage Through Hypoblast Formation, M. R. Bakst, S. K. Gupta, V. Akuffo

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The development of the turkey and chicken embryo from the first cleavage division through hypoblast formation is described. The early development of the chicken embryo has been categorized into 14 stages. A similar staging sequence for the turkey was not proposed until 1993, when we described the early development of the turkey embryo, which was divided into 11 stages. Comparatively, differences in the temporal and spatial development of the turkey and chicken blastoderm were evident. Of significance is the observation that at oviposition the turkey is in Stage VII and characterized by the first signs of area pellucida formation. In …

Effects On White Leghorn Hens Of Constant Exposure To Ultraviolet Light From Insect Traps, Jerome Hogsette, Henry Wilson, Susan Semple-Rowland Jan 1997

Effects On White Leghorn Hens Of Constant Exposure To Ultraviolet Light From Insect Traps, Jerome Hogsette, Henry Wilson, Susan Semple-Rowland

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Constant exposure of Hy-Line® W-36 White Leghorn hens to ultraviolet light from insect traps resulted in no significant differences in egg production, fertility, hatchability of fertile eggs, or total hatchability. Also, there were no apparent effects on the eyes of the birds. Results were the same when either blacklight or blacklight blue tubes were used. The need for additional testing of light traps for nuisance fly control in commercial caged layer houses is discussed.
