October 17 to December 13, 1997

Introduction

Abstract art is stripped bare of other things in order to intensify its rhythms, spatial intervals, and color structure, a process of emphasis. - Robert Motherwell

The renowned Abstract Expressionist artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), best known as a painter, produced a remarkable body of works on paper. His drawings, prints, and collages show an intimate side of his visual sensibility and reveal the very personal "handwriting" of the artist as he responded to the subtleties of paper, both as a medium and …

Method To Correct The Voxel Size In Press Localized Nmr Stereoscopy, Diana M. Lindquist, Roger M. Hawk, Richard A. Komoroski

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two techniques commonly used on human magnetic resonance spectroscopy systems to obtain spectra from localized volumes in the brain are point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) spectroscopy. PRESS gives a signal twice as large as that obtained with STEAM, but suffers from longer minimum echo times. While STEAM must be used to detect species with short spin-spin relaxation times, PRESS can be used for species with longer relaxation times to give a spectrum with a better signal to noise ratio. Only STEAM was provided for the GE Omega 4.7 T small animal imager used in this …

The Use Of Mediation And Arbitration For Resolving Family Conflicts: What Lawyers Think About Them, Mary Kay Kisthardt Jan 1997

The Use Of Mediation And Arbitration For Resolving Family Conflicts: What Lawyers Think About Them, Mary Kay Kisthardt

Faculty Works

The use of alternative methods for resolving family conflict has increased significantly in the past few years, but many attorneys are still wary. In an effort to discover some of the sources of this hesitation as well as identify support for "alternative" processes, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers surveyed its members concerning the use of dispute resolution methods. The purpose of this study was to ascertain attorneys' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of the two most commonly used alternative dispute resolution mechanisms: mediation and arbitration. Whether clients will continue to use these methods depends in great part on …

Temperament In Late Talkers, Rhea Paul, Loretta Kellogg Jan 1997

Temperament In Late Talkers, Rhea Paul, Loretta Kellogg

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

This study examines the temperamental characteristics of children who were identified at age two as being slow in expressive language development, and those of peers with normal language history. When the children were in first grade (approximately age six), parents and clinicians rated subjects' temperamental characteristics, using a standardized temperament assessment instrument. Subjects with a history of slow expressive language development were rated significantly lower on Approach/Withdrawal--indicating shyness, aloofness, or reduced outgoingness--than peers with normal language history. Approach/Withdrawal scores were significantly correlated with average sentence length in spontaneous speech, and this measure also predicted Approach/Withdrawal scores in regression analyses. The …

A Feasibility Study Of Fuel Cell Cogeneration In Industry, Scott B. Phelps, J. Kelly Kissock Jan 1997

A Feasibility Study Of Fuel Cell Cogeneration In Industry, Scott B. Phelps, J. Kelly Kissock

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Up until now, most of the literature on fuel cell cogeneration describes cogeneration at commercial sites. In this study, a PC25C phosphoric acid fuel cell cogeneration system was designed for an industrial facility and an economic analysis was performed. The US DOE Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) database was examined to determine what industry considers a good investment for energy saving measures. Finally, the results of the cogeneration analysis and database investigation were used to project the conditions in which the PC25C might be accepted by industry.

Analysis of IAC database revealed that energy conservation recommendations with simple paybacks as high …

The Linnaean Hierarchy And The Evolutionization Of Taxonomy, With Emphasis On The Problem Of Nomenclature, Kevin De Queiroz Jan 1997

The Linnaean Hierarchy And The Evolutionization Of Taxonomy, With Emphasis On The Problem Of Nomenclature, Kevin De Queiroz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

During the post-Darwinian history of taxonomy, the Linnaean hierarchy has maintained its role as a means for representing hierarchical taxonomic relationships. During the same period, the principle of descent has taken on an increasingly important role as the basis for reformulated versions of fundamental taxonomic concepts and principles. Early in this history, the principle of descent provided an explanation for the existence of taxa and implied a nested, hierarchical structure for taxonomic relationships. Although an evolutionary explanation for taxa contradicted the Aristotelian context within which the Linnaean hierarchy was developed, the nested, hierarchical structure of taxonomic rela· tionships implied by …

Reemergence Of The Charter Application Debate: Issues For The Supreme Court In Eldridge And Vriend, Richard Fader

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

With the Supreme Court poised to hear the Eldridge and Vriend cases, and the lack of academic and individual consensus on the effectiveness of the government actor test, it appears that we are entering round two of the Charter application debate. The author contends that the threshold approach should be scrapped in favour o f a rights-based analysis, which defines the Charter's scope within the context of the right or freedom in question. Attention is also given to similar issues being examined by the South African Constitutional Court. *** Considérant que la Cour suprême du Canada est prête à entendre …

Wto Dispute Resolution: The Promotion Of Diplomacy Within An Adjudicative Model, Trevor Lawson Jan 1997

Wto Dispute Resolution: The Promotion Of Diplomacy Within An Adjudicative Model, Trevor Lawson

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This comment will initially identify what is generally agreed upon as the goal of dispute resolution within the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime. Secondly, the two approaches historically associated with the debate as to how the objectives of dispute resolution within the GATT/WTO are best achieved, that of the legalist and that of the pragmatic or diplomatic approach, will be examined. Thirdly, it will be established that these two positions can be reconciled under a single model which employs adjudication as the ultimate arbiter of disputes, examining the civil justice system …
