Socioeconomic Status And Health In Blacks And Whites: The Problem Of Residual Confounding And The Resiliency Of Race, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper, Daniel L. Mcgee

Faculty Publications

A large number of epidemiologic studies have focused on racial/ethnic differences, particularly between blacks and whites. Because health endpoints and racial categorizations are associated with socioeconomic status, investigator, generally adjust for socioeconomic indicators. The intention is usually to control for confounding, thereby making groups comparable and excluding socioeconomic status as an alternative explanation to hypotheses of innate physiologic differences. A threat to the validity of these analyses is therefore the presence of residual confounding. We identify four potential sources of residual confounding in this analytical design: categorization of socioeconomic status variables, measurement error in socioeconomic indicators, use of aggregated socioeconomic …

Occupational Therapy's Link To Vocational Reeducation, 1910-1925., Sharon A. Gutman Nov 1997

Occupational Therapy's Link To Vocational Reeducation, 1910-1925., Sharon A. Gutman

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

The development of occupational therapy is rooted in early 20th century medical reform. During the early 1910s, several members of the medical profession, human service workers, and the larger American society were increasingly disturbed by medical practices that did not consider the individual's personal experience of disability. Occupational therapy was developed, in part, out of this desire to provide persons with treatment that helped them to function in their communities despite their disability. Early occupational therapy leaders envisioned the fledgling profession as a societal service capable of assisting persons with disabilities to return to both work and community life. Vocational …

The Illiberalism Of Liberalism: Religious Discourse In The Public Square, Douglas G. Smith Nov 1997

The Illiberalism Of Liberalism: Religious Discourse In The Public Square, Douglas G. Smith

San Diego Law Review

The author argues that religious beliefs are appropriate grounds for public justification and choice. This view has been attacked by various liberal theorists, including John Rawls, for subjecting individuals in society to coercive government action based on premises to which they cannot reasonably assent. John Rawl’s Political Liberalism is analyzed as an instance of liberal theorists unnecessarily excluding a religious perspective from “liberal” public discourse. Professor Smith presents a new model of public discourse which, offering a moral and epistemological basis for including religious and other theories in public debate and choice.

Vertical Profiles Of Bromoform In Snow, Sea Ice, And Seawater In The Canadian Arctic, William T. Sturges, Glenn F. Cota, Paul T. Buckley Nov 1997

Vertical Profiles Of Bromoform In Snow, Sea Ice, And Seawater In The Canadian Arctic, William T. Sturges, Glenn F. Cota, Paul T. Buckley

CCPO Publications

Bromoform (CHBr3) was measured in vertical profiles from the snow surface through the snowpack, sea ice, and water column to the seafloor at Resolute Bay, Canada, in the sprig of 1992. Elevated concentrations of bromoform were observed in both the ice (32-266 ng L-1 by liquid water volume) and seawater (~ 20 ng L-1 ) at the ice-water interface, associated with bromoform emission from ice microalgae. A surprising finding was a second horizon of high bromoform concentrations (336-367 ng L-1) in sea ice at the snow-ice interface. Chlorophyll and salinity were also elevated in …

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick Nov 1997

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick

Peer Reviewed Articles

Protein kinase C (PKC) activation in the heart has been linked to a hypertrophic phenotype and to processes that influence contractile function. To establish whether PKC activation is sufficient to induce an abnormal phenotype, PKCbeta was conditionally expressed in cardiomyocytes of transgenic mice. Transgene expression in adults caused mild and progressive ventricular hypertrophy associated with impaired diastolic relaxation, whereas expression in newborns caused sudden death associated with marked abnormalities in the regulation of intracellular calcium. Thus, the PKC signaling pathway in cardiocytes has different effects depending on the timing of expression and, in the adult, is sufficient to induce pathologic …

Smith V. Fair Employment And Housing Commission: Religious Freedom And Anti-Discrimination Laws Square Off In The Landlord/Tenant Setting, David S. Goles

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This casenote examines the California Supreme Court decision of Smith v. Fair Employment and Housing Commission and determines that the analysis applied by the court was improper and not in conformance with precedential law. The note begins by providing a historical overview of the various approaches the United States Supreme Court has taken in analyzing the right to freely exercise religion. After determining what the current analysis is, the author examines the Smith decision and determines the California Supreme Court misapplied the third part of that analysis, the substantial burden test. The author argues that had the California Supreme Court …

The Trust Doctrine In Federal Indian Law: A Look At Its Development And How Its Analysis Under Social Contract Theory Might Expand Its Scope, Janice Aitken

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article explores the continuing legal relationship between American Indians and the federal government of the United States. Namely, the battle over controlling internal tribal affairs. The history of that relationship has developed out of tensions over two doctrines the "plenary" power doctrine and the "trust" doctrine. The author reviews the possibility of expanding the scope of the trust doctrine based upon the application of a Social Contract Theory. Finally, the implications of such a theory are also discussed.
