Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the order of importance of components of juvenile correctional programming as ranked by adolescent females currently assigned to a probation officer in the juvenile correctional system. Twenty- two adjudicated adolescent females ranked in order of their perceived importance thirty-one components of correctional programming using a scale developed from components determined by the current literature to be important for gender specific programming for adolescent females . The results of the study were that subjects rated components addressing issues of physical safety, education, and vocation as being of primary importance. The subjects also stated …

Postnatal Observations Of Behavioral Patterns Within The Social Organization Of Captive Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Stacey R. Hanson Nov 1997

Postnatal Observations Of Behavioral Patterns Within The Social Organization Of Captive Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Stacey R. Hanson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Mirage Dolphin Environment opened in 1991. The Mirage has eight Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins. Four of these dolphins were relocated to the facility from other facilities that were either overcrowded or shutting down. The other four were born at the Mirage. The purpose and intent of the Mirage Dolphin Environment is to provide a nurturing environment for the dolphins and to educate the public about marine mammals and their ecosystems. The increased awareness associated with education will hopefully encourage public support for efforts to conserve and protect marine mammals and their environment.

Murine Transporter Associated With Antigen Presentation (Tap) Preferences Influence Class I-Restricted T Cell Responses., A J Yellen-Shaw, C E Laughlin, R M Metrione, Laurence C. Eisenlohr

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The transporter associated with antigen presentation (TAP) complex shuttles cytosolic peptides into the exocytic compartment for association with nascent major histocompatibility complex class I molecules. Biochemical studies of murine and human TAP have established that substrate length and COOH-terminal residue identity are strong determinants of transport efficiency. However, the existence of these specificities in the intact cell and their influences on T cell responses have not been demonstrated. We have devised a method for studying TAP- mediated transport in intact cells, using T cell activation as a readout. The approach makes use of a panel of recombinant vaccinia viruses expressing …

Mental Illness As Cultural Problem With Examples From Modem Austrian Literature, Geoffrey Howes Nov 1997

Mental Illness As Cultural Problem With Examples From Modem Austrian Literature, Geoffrey Howes

ICS Events

What does it mean to say that mental illness is a cultural problem? People use words like "crazy," "nuts," "wacko," "psycho," "mad," or "insane" without necessarily thinking about what they really mean. We keep our fear of mental illness at bay by using these words to make fun of behavior we think is odd. But we don't usually think that these words also classify people who have been diagnosed with mental disorders. There is no middle ground between everyday facetious language and the professional, technical language of psychiatry. This failure of language reflects the failure of our culture to accommodate …
