A Study Of The "Pride" Program: A Residential, Summer-School Program For At-Risk Middle-School Students In An Urban Community, Maria Teresa Amillategui Grimm

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This research examined the Pride Program (1991 and 1992)--a residential, summer-school program for at-risk middle-school students. It was conducted with subjects from two large, urban middle schools for the purpose of determining if, after five school years, differences existed among three selected groups (treatment, control and comparison) of at-risk students in the areas of academic achievement, attendance and conduct. Treatment-group self-esteem was examined over a three-year period. Furthermore, this study provided a qualitative program evaluation of the Pride Program for the first two years of its existence.

The results are as follows: The qualitative evaluation indicated that all participants were …

Two Perspectives On Interventions And Humanitarian Operations, Earl H. Tilford Dr., David Tucker Dr., Robert B. Oakley Amb

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A recent symposium cosponsored by the Strategic Studies Institute and the University of Kentucky's Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce examined that grey area between war and peace, between intervention in support of national interests and humanitarian operations which, while necessary and appropriate, also put Americans in danger while consuming precious and ever scarcer resources. The following two papers from that symposium complement each other well. In the first, a revised after action report on his experiences in Somalia, Ambassador Robert B. Oakley, a career foreign service officer who served as Special Envoy to Somalia during both the present …

Homeownership And Well-Being Among Blue-Collar Workers, Deborah Page-Adams, Nancy Vosler Jul 1997

Homeownership And Well-Being Among Blue-Collar Workers, Deborah Page-Adams, Nancy Vosler

Center for Social Development Research

The economic, social, and psychological vulnerability of blue-collar workers increases as the U.S. economy continues to shift from manufacturing to service and technology. This paper reports findings from an analysis of economic resources and well-being among automobile manufacturing workers. Following previous theoretical and empirical work suggesting positive homeownership effects for vulnerable populations, this analysis was designed to test relationships between homeownership and four measures of well-being while controlling for household income and education levels. Workers from two adjacent automobile manufacturing plants in a large midwestern metropolitan area were surveyed. Multivariate analysis of data from a subsample of 193 workers indicate …

How Can The Poor Save? Theory And Evidence On Saving In Low-Income Households, Sondra Beverly Jul 1997

How Can The Poor Save? Theory And Evidence On Saving In Low-Income Households, Sondra Beverly

Center for Social Development Research

There is an emerging policy and academic discussion, supported by a growing body of empirical evidence, regarding the potentially positive effects of asset accumulation in lowincome households. However, at least two questions precede this discussion: Can the poor save? And, if so, how can programs and policies promote saving by the poor? This paper begins to address these questions through an interdisciplinary review of theory and empirical evidence on saving. The first section summarizes existing theories of saving and asset accumulation. In the second section, a general model of saving is presented. This model emphasizes contextual influences as well as …

Mortgage Lending: Is Gender A Factor?, Cynthia K. Sanders, Edwaard Scalon, Shirley R. Emerson Jul 1997

Mortgage Lending: Is Gender A Factor?, Cynthia K. Sanders, Edwaard Scalon, Shirley R. Emerson

Center for Social Development Research

In promoting well-being for women and female-headed households, social policy analysts are increasingly attending to wealth accumulation rather than focusing solely on income. Homeownership equity is a form of wealth that may be especially helpful for low-income women. This paper analyzes 1992 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data for the city and county of St. Louis. Our primary hypothesis was that women, controlling for marital status, income, and race, would be more likely to be denied home loans. The findings from this data set contradict our hypothesis and suggest that men are slightly more likely than women to be denied mortgage …

The Spousal Assault Policy: A Critical Analysis, Leah Rachin Jul 1997

The Spousal Assault Policy: A Critical Analysis, Leah Rachin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article examines the complex relationship between PCLS's spousal assault policy and the clinic's mandate to practice poverty law. The author addresses the conflict which arises from the clinic's attempt to reconcile two goals-access to justice for all members of Parkdale's poor community and advocacy in the area of violence against women. The article also examines whether poverty can serve as a catalyst for violent behaviour or whether such a hypothesis is based on classist myths and assumptions. Ultimately, the author concludes that if battering can be linked to poverty, then PCLS (as a poverty law clinic) has an obligation …

Legal Education: Nemesis Or Ally Of Social Movements?, Janet E. Mosher Jul 1997

Legal Education: Nemesis Or Ally Of Social Movements?, Janet E. Mosher

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There is much in legal education which contributes to lawyering practices that are fundamentally at odds with the formation of social movements. These practices include the "individualization" of client problems; the reshaping of the realities of clients' lives into legal categories or boxes; the commitment to instrumentalism (that is, to securing a favourable legal result); and lawyer domination and control and the correlates of client silence and passivity. The genesis for these features of dominant lawyering practices can be traced, at least in part, to legal education. More specifically, legal education's emphasis upon doctrinal analysis, its tendency to trade upon …

Relational And Overt Aggression In Preschool, Nikki R. Crick, Juan F. Casas, Monique Mosher Jul 1997

Relational And Overt Aggression In Preschool, Nikki R. Crick, Juan F. Casas, Monique Mosher

Psychology Faculty Publications

This research was designed as an initial attempt to assess relational aggression in preschool-age children. Our goal was to develop reliable measures of relational aggression for young children and to use these instruments to address several important issues (e.g., the relation between this form of aggression and social–psychological adjustment). Results provide evidence that relationally aggressive behaviors appear in children's behavioral repertoires at relatively young ages, and that these behaviors can be reliably distinguished from overtly aggressive behaviors in preschool-age children. Further, findings indicate that preschool girls are significantly more relationally aggressive and less overtly aggressive than preschool boys. Finally, results …

An Exploratory Multiple Case Study: Total Quality And Strategic Planning In Education, Susan J. Hallstrom Evanich Jul 1997

An Exploratory Multiple Case Study: Total Quality And Strategic Planning In Education, Susan J. Hallstrom Evanich

Student Work

This study explored the benefits and limitations of combining Total Quality Education (TQE) and strategic planning in public school districts and the degree to which quality is clarified by the district. This was an exploratory multiple-case study and was conducted because (a) little research exists on either of these practices and even less on the combined approach, (b) the combined approach has not been studied in K-12 public schooling, (c) the combined approach can provide a systemic model which has implications for achieving significant changes in education, and (d) school districts need quality improvement models that are suitable in meeting …

A Test Of The Self-Regulatory Model Of Prejudice Reduction, Sonja Williams Jul 1997

A Test Of The Self-Regulatory Model Of Prejudice Reduction, Sonja Williams

Student Work

Two assumptions derived from Devine and Monteith’s (1993) self-regulatory model of prejudice reduction were tested utilizing a stereotype-activating stimulus believed to be similar to one which is more likely to occur in everyday-life than those used in previous research. Black and white actors making ambiguously hostile statements were evaluated by 92 low and high-prejudiced participants. Rating-scale data provided partial support for the assumption that low-prejudiced participants inhibit stereotype-consistent responses and replace them with personal, more egalitarian beliefs. Specifically, low-prejudiced participants provided significantly more favorable ratings than their high-prejudiced counterparts (p = .030). Reaction-time data provided support for the model’s assumption …

Theoretical Underpinnings Of Service Learning, Rebecca Lynn Carver Jul 1997

Theoretical Underpinnings Of Service Learning, Rebecca Lynn Carver

Service Learning, General

Although the merits of service learning frequently rest on how well it can be argued that the programs improve students' academic skills, this is only one of several outcomes that can result from implementing service learning programs. This article introduces readers to the full range of goals that service learning promises to achieve and to the specific principles that can be put into practice in order to meet these goals. Service learning consciously integrates students' experiences into the curriculum. As such it addresses the three major goals of "experiential education": allowing students to become more effective change agents, developing students' …

The Supreme Court's Decision To Recognize A Psychotherapist Privilege In Jaffee V. Redmond, 116 S. Ct. 1923 (1996): The Meaning Of The Term 'Experience' And The Role Of 'Reason' Under Federal Rule Of Evidence 501, Diane Marie Amann, Edward J. Imwinkelried Jul 1997

Imwinkelried

Scholarly Works

In Jaffee v. United States, 116 S. Ct. 1923 (1996), the U.S. Supreme Court recognized a testimonial privilege protecting the patient-psychotherapist relationship. Its decision is based on Rule 501 of the Federal Rules of Evidence, which permits courts to decide novel questions of privilege in the light of reason and experience. The Court held that this rule authorized not only recognition of a new privilege, but also a privilege of a broad scope, extending to relationships between patients and licensed clinical social workers. Its decision came as a mild surprise, given a widely shared assumption that Rule 501 creates a …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Family Law Jurisprudence: Application Of An Ecological And Therapeutic Perspective, Barbara A. Babb Jul 1997

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Family Law Jurisprudence: Application Of An Ecological And Therapeutic Perspective, Barbara A. Babb

All Faculty Scholarship

Traditionally, the legal system has attempted to fashion morality in determining family legal issues rather than to devise legal remedies that accommodate how families live. This approach must change, and a new approach based on legal realism that effectuates the well-being of families and children must be developed. This article proposes an interdisciplinary approach based on an ecological and therapeutic jurisprudential paradigm to resolve family legal proceedings. An ecological approach, emanating from the ecology of human development social science paradigm, is one in which family law decision-makers consider factors beyond their conceptions of the family. This approach urges decision-makers to …

Emotional And Sexual Dating Infidelity As A Function Of Gender Relationship Quality And Parental Influence, Melinda Jeanene Swager Jul 1997

Emotional And Sexual Dating Infidelity As A Function Of Gender Relationship Quality And Parental Influence, Melinda Jeanene Swager

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study addressed dating infidelity attitudes and behaviors among college students involved in romantic relationships. Both emotional and sexual components of infidelity were analyzed. A gender difference emerged, with men being more accepting of dating infidelity and engaging in dating infidelity more often than women. Among both genders, however, attitudes were positively associated with behaviors. It was hypothesized that the following variables would predict dating infidelity: relationship satisfaction, relationship commitment, family structure, interparental conflict, parent-child relationship quality, and a young adult's knowledge of his or her parent's infidelity. Attitudes were found to predict behaviors. Relationship satisfaction and commitment were also …

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This descriptive correlational study was designed to explore job satisfaction and collegial support in relation to the retention of nurse educators.

A survey questionnaire adapted from Batiste-Beaty (1990/1991) was used to collect data on nurse educators' retention rates and their perceptions of job satisfaction and collegial support in their present institutions. The survey was distributed to the 350 faculty members in the 12 baccalaureate and higher degree nursing programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The survey had a 51% return rate, with a total of 178 respondents. The two primary statistical procedures used in analyzing the data were Pearson's product-moment …

The Demystification Of Legal Discourse: Reconceiving The Role Of The Poverty Lawyer As Agent Of The Poor, Cherie Robertson Jul 1997

The Demystification Of Legal Discourse: Reconceiving The Role Of The Poverty Lawyer As Agent Of The Poor, Cherie Robertson

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

By employing traditional methods of legal representation when acting on behalf of those living in poverty, lawyers act to perpetuate the disempowerment of poor people.. While the systemic barriers confronting the poor must be addressed, so too must the power of the poor to help themselves through organization and resistance. The task of the poverty lawyer committed to facilitating the agency of the poor is made difficult by the exclusivity and formalism of legal discourse, the constraints of the Rules of Professional Conduct, and by traditional understandings of the appropriate role of lawyers. However, a reconceptualization of the role of …

U.S. National Security: Beyond The Cold War, Robert Ellsworth Amb, Morton H. Halperin Dr., David Jablonsky Dr., Lawrence Korb Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

U.S. national security is a subject that has been under intense scrutiny since the end of the Cold War. What constitutes such security for the United States as this country approaches the new century? Are the ends, ways, and means of our national security and national military strategies sufficient to provide for the nation's future? And above all, as this country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Security Act of 1947, are the institutions that resulted from that act still sufficient for the post-Cold War era?

With these questions in mind, the Strategic Studies Institute and Dickinson College's Clarke …
