An Assessment Of Relationships Between Actual And Perceived Caregiving Demand And Negative Impact Measures, Michele L. Mandrich Nov 1997

An Assessment Of Relationships Between Actual And Perceived Caregiving Demand And Negative Impact Measures, Michele L. Mandrich

Theses and Graduate Projects

Previous research has focused on the time spent and the tasks involved in caregiving and on care recipient characteristics in measuring caregiving demand and predicting negative impacts (Aneshensel, Pearlin, & Schuler, 1993; McKinlay, Crawford, & Tennstedt, 1995; Stull, Bowman, & Smerglia, 1994). However, the nature of the relationship between objectively measured caregiving demand and negative impacts for caregivers remains unclear. Researchers now note that assessing caregivers' perceptions of demand may be key in understanding negative impacts (Coverman, 1989; Litvin, Albert, Brody, & Hoffman, 1995; Loomis & Booth, 1995). This study assessed relationships between objective and subjective reports of caregiving demand …

Works on Radiation Effects: 1990-2020

These are talking notes for my presentation at a nuclear non-proliferation conference. Interesting to see recommendations including this one, "I suggest Minister Shkolnik create a joint committee with representatives from government, academicia, public survivors and ethicists to continue the pursuit of this question." See more at Armin Weinberg, PhD Papers and its finding aid.

Market-Based Resource Control For Mobile Agents, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus Nov 1997

Market-Based Resource Control For Mobile Agents, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

Mobile agents are programs that can migrate from machine to machine in a heterogeneous, partially disconnected network. As mobile agents move across a network, they consume resources. We discuss a system for controlling the activities of mobile agents that uses electronic cash, a banking system, and a set of resource managers. We describe protocols for transactions between agents. We present fixed-pricing and dynamic-pricing policies for resources. We focus on and analyze the sealed-bid second-price auction as a mechanism for dynamic pricing.

Blood, Sun, And Sacrifice : The Anatomy Of Violent Ritual In Post-Classic Mesoamerica, Michael Wayne Hurley Nov 1997

Blood, Sun, And Sacrifice : The Anatomy Of Violent Ritual In Post-Classic Mesoamerica, Michael Wayne Hurley

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

A paradox of sorts existed in Mesoamerica around the time following the demise of Tula, one that involved human sacrifice and its role in two similar cultures. While ritual killings presented themselves in the valley of Mexico as well as the Yucatan peninsula since the first civilizations evolved there, something had changed during the Toltec rule. The arrival of the benevolent leader Ce acatl Topiltzin, later called Quetzalcoatl, ushered in a time in which the Toltecs rarely practiced human sacrifice. Topiltzin, son of the first Toltec leader Mixcoatl, brought to the area a sense of peace and wealth that had …

Vcu Voice (1997-11-24) Nov 1997

Vcu Voice (1997-11-24)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The Use And Abuse Of Socrates In Present Day Teaching, Anthony G. Rud Jr. Nov 1997

The Use And Abuse Of Socrates In Present Day Teaching, Anthony G. Rud Jr.

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The Greek philosopher Socrates is used as an example of a master teacher in in many contexts, from elementary school discussions, to college philosophy classes, to law school. I examine a number of current uses of Socratic teaching, and expose inconsistencies among them. I analyze critically recent practitioners of Socratic teaching, such as Mortimer Adler, and I consider how the celebrated primary teacher Vivian Gussin Paley enacts the Socratic legacy in a novel way. I argue that the misuse, or abuse, of the Socratic legacy occurs chiefly when his teaching is interpreted narrowly as a pedagogical technique devoid of context …

Kogen V. Chief Military Prosecutor, Theodor Or, Dalia Dorner, Jacob Turkel Nov 1997

Kogen V. Chief Military Prosecutor, Theodor Or, Dalia Dorner, Jacob Turkel

Translated Opinions

Facts: Petitioners, prisoners in a military prison, participated in a prison uprising allegedly motivated by deficient prison conditions. The military authorities negotiated with the inmates, who demanded improvements in prison conditions and a commitment from the authorities not to prosecute them. The military authorities agreed to this last condition. Despite this agreement, however, the inmates were prosecuted. Petitioners here contest this latter decision.

Held: The Court noted that precedents allow for the government to repudiate an agreement if such a step is dictated by the public interest. Such a decision must take all the relevant interests into account, including the …
