Symposium on Double-Crested Cormorants: Population Status and Management Issues in the Midwest
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the University of Michigan and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, initiated a research study to determine the impact of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) on the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) population in the Les Cheneaux Islands area of northern Lake Huron. Aerial and nesting colony counts were conducted to monitor cormorant abundance. Creel census counts and tagging of 8,400 perch were used to study perch abundance. We collected 373 cormorants to study food habits via stomach-content analysis. We found that (1) cormorants fed heavily on yellow perch …

Double-Crested Cormorant Impacts On Sport Fish: Literature Review, Agency Survey, And Strategies, John L. Trapp, Stephen J. Lewis, Diane M. Pence
Symposium on Double-Crested Cormorants: Population Status and Management Issues in the Midwest
In response to concerns expressed by anglers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an extensive review of published studies done throughout the United States and Canada on the impacts of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) on sport-fish populations in open waters. The literature review indicated that fish species valued by sport and commercial anglers make up a very small proportion of the cormorants’ diet and that these birds have a minor effect on fish populations compared to the effects of sport and commercial fishing, natural predation, and other mortality factors. The Service sent a questionnaire to State agencies, …

Strategies To Reduce Double-Crested Cormorant Depredation At Aquaculture Facilities In Mississippi, David S. Reinhold, Charles A. (Bo) Sloan
Symposium on Double-Crested Cormorants: Population Status and Management Issues in the Midwest
Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) depredation throughout the Southeastern United States has been on the increase over the past 20 years. The increase in depredation coincides with the growth of the aquaculture industry and an expansion of double-crested cormorant wintering populations throughout the Southeast. The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service–Wildlife Services plays a major role in reducing double-crested cormorant damage. Nonlethal harassment on farms, dispersal from night roosts, and lethal control have reduced double-crested cormorant depredation at aquaculture farms in Mississippi. However, the efficiency and compatibility of current methods of reducing double-crested cormorant depredation must …

Phase Structure Of Dynamical Triangulation Models In Three Dimensions, Simon Catterall, Ray L. Renken, John B. Kogut
Physics - All Scholarship
The dynamical triangulation model of three-dimensional quantum gravity is shown to have a line of transitions in an expanded phase diagram which includes a coupling mu to the order of the vertices. Monte Carlo renormalization group and finite size scaling techniques are used to locate and characterize this line. Our results indicate that for mu < mu1 ~ -1.0 the model is always in a crumpled phase independent of the value of the curvature coupling. For mu < 0 the results are in agreement with an approximate mean field treatment. We find evidence that this line corresponds to first order transitions extending to positive mu. However, the behavior appears to change for mu > mu2 ~ 2-4. The simplest scenario that is consistent with the data is the existence of a critical end point.

Stern-Gerlach Effect For Electron Beams, Herman Batelaan, Timothy J. Gay, J. J. Schwendiman
Stern-Gerlach Effect For Electron Beams, Herman Batelaan, Timothy J. Gay, J. J. Schwendiman
Timothy J. Gay Publications
The conflict between Bohr’s assertion that the magnetic moment of the electron cannot be measured with experiments based on the concept of classical trajectories, and the measurement of the magnetic moment of electrons in a modified Penning trap by Dehmelt et al. has led us to reevaluate other implications of Bohr’s assertion. We show that, contrary to the analysis of Bohr and Pauli, the assumption of classical trajectories in a Stern-Gerlach–like device can result in a high degree of spin separation for an electron beam. This effect may persist within a fully quantum-mechanical analysis. The magnetic fields considered are such …
Vcu Voice (1997-12-08)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Probing The Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding Of Water Molecules At The Ccl4/Water Interface In The Presence Of Charges Soluble Surfactant, D. E. Gragson, G. L. Richmond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The molecular structure and hydrogen bonding of water molecules at the CCl4/water interface in the presence of a charged soluble surfactant has been explored in this study using vibrational sum frequency generation. By examining OH stretching modes that are highly sensitive to the local hydrogen bonding environment it is found that water molecules at the CCl4/water interface both in the presence and absence of a charged soluble surfactant are predominantly in a tetrahedral arrangement much like the structure ofice. Isotopic dilution studies have been employed to further characterize this icelike interfacial structure. Ablueshift ofapproximately120 cm-1 …

Remark On The Potential Function Of The Linear Sigma Model, Joseph Schechter, David Delphenich
Remark On The Potential Function Of The Linear Sigma Model, Joseph Schechter, David Delphenich
Physics - All Scholarship
It is shown that the potential functions for the ordinary linear sigma model can be divided into two topographically different types depending on whether the quantity R\equiv (m_\sigma /m_\pi)^2 is greater than or less than nine. Since the Wigner-Weyl mode (R=1) and the Nambu-Goldstone mode (R=\infty belong to different regions, we speculate that this classification may provide a generalization to the broken symmetry situation, which could be convenient for roughly characterizing different possible applications of the model. It is noted that a more complicated potential does not so much change this picture as add different new regions.

Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B0 → J/Ψ K *0and B0 → J/Ψ K*+. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization ΓL/Γ= 0.52 ± 0.07 ± 0.04 and the P wave component │P│2= 0.16 ± 0.08 ± 0.04. In addition, we update the branching fractions for B → J/Ψ K and B → J/Ψ K …

A New Young Diagrammatic Method For Kronecker Products Of O(N) And Sp(2m), Pan Feng, Shihai Dong, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
A new simple Young diagrammatic method for Kronecker products of O(n) and Sp(2m) is proposed based on the representation theory of Brauer algebras. A general procedure for the decomposition of the tensor products of representations for O(n) and Sp(2m) is outlined, which is similar to that for U(n) known as the Littlewood rules, together with trace contractions from a Brauer algebra and some modification rules given by King.
