Textual Identity In John Barth's "The Sot-Weed Factor" And In Alejo Carpentier's "El Siglo De Las Luces", Roger Geertz Gonzalez Jan 1997

Textual Identity In John Barth's "The Sot-Weed Factor" And In Alejo Carpentier's "El Siglo De Las Luces", Roger Geertz Gonzalez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In The Sot-Weed Factor, set in the eighteenth century, John Barth describes the adventures of Ebenezer Cooke and Henry Burlingame. Ebenezer, or Eben, and Henry, see the world and themselves through a diversity of texts, not just written ones. Ironically, Henry tries to dissuade Eben from relying on these texts. In El siglo de las luces, Alejo Carpentier depicts the development of the protagonists Esteban and Victor during the French Revolution in France and its repercussions in the Caribbean. Esteban realizes during and after the Revolution that it and himself are influenced by texts that cannot express reality or help …

Women's Feminist Collective Identity: A Liberal Feminist Analysis Of Feminist Identification And Feminist Consciousness, Tiffany Ann Hiller Jan 1997

Women's Feminist Collective Identity: A Liberal Feminist Analysis Of Feminist Identification And Feminist Consciousness, Tiffany Ann Hiller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Data from the 1992 American National Election Study are used to examine three issues: first, who is most likely to identify as a feminist; second, who is likely to show a feminist consciousness; and finally who possesses both the feminist identification and feminist consciousness that demonstrate a feminist collective identity. The results indicate that feminist identification and feminist consciousness are separate but related constructs and that overall feminist collective identity among women is weak. The findings indicate a need to make clear which dimension--feminist identification or feminist consciousness--is being used in efforts to understand women's feminist collective identity and how …

Words Behind Writing: A Feminist Approach To Language And Liberation In Erna Brodber's "Jane And Louisa Will Soon Come Home" And "Myal", Paula Yvonne Edwards Jan 1997

Words Behind Writing: A Feminist Approach To Language And Liberation In Erna Brodber's "Jane And Louisa Will Soon Come Home" And "Myal", Paula Yvonne Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ema Brodber combines sociological concerns with her creative imagination in two novels, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home and Myal. Her stated aim is to provide people of the African diaspora with tools to face the world more confidently. She is particularly interested in the plight of women in postcolonial Caribbean countries whose lives are determined by imperialist and patriarchal discourses. The tools she provides are linguistic. By integrating Jamaican Creole and English Brodber enacts her protagonists' struggles to find a language capable of expressing their reality and opposing colonizing fictions. The novels chart the transition from child to …

Tolerance To Amphetamine In Cannula Vs. Bottle-Fed Animals, Julie A. Walls Jan 1997

Tolerance To Amphetamine In Cannula Vs. Bottle-Fed Animals, Julie A. Walls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The effects of amphetamine on the milk intake, body weight, and behavioral activity of bottle- and cannula-fed rats was investigated in a before/after paradigm. Dose response determinations were conducted before (DR 1) and after (DR 2) chronic treatment (45 days) with amphetamine (8.0 mg/kg) given either before or after milk tests, to determine whether tolerance developed to the anorexic effect of the drug. Control groups were given saline during the chronic phase. Both cannula- and bottle-fed animals lost a significant amount of weight. Cannula-fed animals drank significantly more than bottle-fed animals throughout the chronic phase. Statistical analysis revealed significant increases …

Henry James And Plato: Divining The Truth In "What Maisie Knew", Rosanne B. Marquart Jan 1997

Henry James And Plato: Divining The Truth In "What Maisie Knew", Rosanne B. Marquart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Henry James's and Plato's presumed ideological incompatibility is fostered in part by the philosopher's well documented censure of literature and the arts and by his belief that true knowledge is secured by purely rational apprehension. Henry James, however, contends that the philosopher and novelist have comparable concerns, for both seek truth and the origins and meaning of virtue. Plato's conception of knowledge and ethics, however, differs markedly from James's: if true knowledge is commensurate with rational apprehension, emotions and imagination distort rather than elucidate truth. Yet is there but a single path to knowledge? In What Maisie Knew James illustrates …

Implementation Of Low-Complexity Viterbi Decoder, Adeel. Mukhtar Jan 1997

Implementation Of Low-Complexity Viterbi Decoder, Adeel. Mukhtar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The design of mobile communication receiver requires addressing the stringent issues of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) operation and low battery power consumption. Typically, forward error correction using convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding is employed to improve the error performance. However, even with moderate code lengths, the computation and storage requirement of conventional VD are substantial consuming appreciable fraction of DSP computations and hence battery power. The new error selective Viterbi decoding (ESVD) scheme developed recently (1) reduces the computational load substantially by taking advantage of the noise-free intervals to limit the trellis search. This thesis is concerned with the development …

Gender Regimes: A Comparative Study Of Azerbaijan And Armenia, Elizabeth Margaret Scheer Jan 1997

Gender Regimes: A Comparative Study Of Azerbaijan And Armenia, Elizabeth Margaret Scheer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since 1991 the world has witnessed dramatic transformations within the former republics of the Soviet Union. Two of these former republics, the neighboring states of Azerbaijan and Armenia, are undergoing conflicts between nationalist discourse and the entrenched policies of the former Soviet Union. These conflicts are particularly important for the women in these countries. For over seventy years, the Soviets attempted to replace traditional norms and rules about the proper and expected roles of women and men in these societies with a Marxist-Leninist model of gender relations. The study applies two models, the Nationalist-Traditional and Socialist-Modernization models, to the cases …

Immunology Of Green Turtle Fibropapillomatosis, Rene A. Varela Jan 1997

Immunology Of Green Turtle Fibropapillomatosis, Rene A. Varela

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Green Turtle Fibropapillomatosis has been a disease of intense investigation, with little ascertained as to its cause. This investigation thus delved into the possible link between this disease and immune compromise. This was achieved by creating three groups of animals, one characterized as healthy another as diseased, and a third as recovered. Blood taken from each animal was then applied to the four aspects of our investigation: general chemistry, hematology, specialized chemistry, and in vitro cell proliferation to establish the best diagnostic cues. General chemistry, hematology, and specialized chemistry proved to be inconsequential in elucidating the effects of possible immune …

Jean Cocteau And Federico Garcia Lorca: The Search For Identity, Genevieve Brand Jan 1997

Jean Cocteau And Federico Garcia Lorca: The Search For Identity, Genevieve Brand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The traditional, realist, dramatic concept of coherent character identity is ruptured by the two plays Les Chevaliers de la table ronde and El publico. Cocteau's and Lorca's works, which are usually labeled as surrealist due to their apparently disjointed nature, are actually embodiments of the poet-playwrights' continuing attempts to reveal that identity, including gendered identity, is a performance. The metadramatic elements of the plays such as discourse, costumes and gender are unstable and voluntarily changeable; they have repercussions beyond the proscenium. Cocteau and Lorca invite their audiences to consider the performative nature of their identities.

Information-Theoretics Based Genetic Algorithm: Application To Hopfield's Associative Memory Model Of Neural Networks, Tomas Vidal Arredondo Jan 1997

Information-Theoretics Based Genetic Algorithm: Application To Hopfield's Associative Memory Model Of Neural Networks, Tomas Vidal Arredondo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis refers to a research addressing the use of information-theoretic techniques in optimizing an artificial neural network (ANN) via a genetic selection algorithm. Pertinent studies address emulating relevant experiments on a test ANN (based on Hopfield's associative memory model) wherein the said optimization is tried with different sets of control parameters. These parameters include a new entity based on the concept of entropy as conceived in the field of information theory. That is, the mutual entropy (Shannon entropy) or information-distance (Kullback-Leibler-Jensen distance) measure between a pair of candidates is considered in the reproduction process of the genetic algorithm (GA) …

Iterative Remote Sensing As An Alternative For Complex Vegetation Mapping, Robert L. Boutiette Jan 1997

Iterative Remote Sensing As An Alternative For Complex Vegetation Mapping, Robert L. Boutiette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The South Florida Water Management District in conjunction with Florida Atlantic University began an effort to record vegetation invading Lake Okeechobee in 1994. This effort included a mapping project that would include all detectable vegetation within the expanding littoral zone. There were several problems associated with remote sensing aspects of this project. These problems resulted in inaccurate classification of species and a redundancy of mapping for large areas. This thesis will review the remote sensing methods used for the mapping project, analyze the associated errors within the map product, and lastly offer an alternative approach, incorporating the use of iterative …

Ka-Band Radiometry In The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (Acts) System, Monique Jacqueline Bourgeois Jan 1997

Ka-Band Radiometry In The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (Acts) System, Monique Jacqueline Bourgeois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite propagation experiment was designed by NASA to study the effects of precipitation, primarily rain, on Ka frequency band signals. Two beacon signals, transmitted from the satellite, provide attenuation data that is recorded by a propagation terminal located in Tampa, Florida. The received beacon data contains a DC bias and diurnal effects and is therefore uncalibrated. Radiometers, centered at each beacon carrier frequency, are used to set the 0 dB reference level for the beacon data, using constants determined through radiometer calibration techniques. The details of this process are examined using actual propagation data.

Jorie Graham And Alice Fulton: Mavericks Of Excess, Heather A. Elko Jan 1997

Jorie Graham And Alice Fulton: Mavericks Of Excess, Heather A. Elko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Jorie Graham and Alice Fulton's poetries are distinguished by their styles of maximalist excess. They depict the superabundance of the world, including fragmentary contemporary culture, scientific phenomena, and the mind in its process of apprehending. Both poets use idiosyncratic non-verbal devices to account for variables and unworded concepts. Graham's style is verbally and linearly expansive, resisting closure in its long circumlocutions. She weaves contraries and complements into a seamless whole that incorporates loose threads, "failures," and multiple subjectivities. Fulton's style is compressive, embedding heterogeneous subjects and exposing paradox linguistically and by means of satire. She employs wide ranges of diction …

Lived Experience Of Patients During Family Visits In The Critical Care Setting, Sonia D. Remonte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study described the lived experience of patients during family visits in the critical care setting. Using Colaizzi's method of phenomenology interviews were conducted on six critical care patients in their homes two days after discharge from the hospital. From the transcribed interviews, three themes emerged: (a) Family visits enhance patients' well-being; (b) Family visits provide patient support systems; and, (c) Family visits facilitate communication among patients, the health care team, and members of the family. Implications for nursing practice, nursing education, and research are presented.

Language Of Seduction In Ben Jonson's "Volpone", David Theodore Freeman Jan 1997

Language Of Seduction In Ben Jonson's "Volpone", David Theodore Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ben Jonson's Volpone has attracted audiences since its first performance in 1606. This powerful work continues to present interesting problems for critics and teachers. Recent discourse-based critical approaches to literary works, based on the work of Heidegger, Kristeva, and Cixous, promise to reveal imaginative uses of the English language by Jonson in Volpone. The seductive figures of speech work in creating the dramatic interest of the characters and spiralling audience investment. What the audience members think they feel about the characters depends on Jonson's genius behind it all. Jonson used English for innovative seductive effects: for example, "Shall I make …

Love's Torment: Pain And Sexual Pleasure In Dante Alighieri And T. S. Eliot, Maria Anne Romano Jan 1997

Love's Torment: Pain And Sexual Pleasure In Dante Alighieri And T. S. Eliot, Maria Anne Romano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Sexual pleasure, for the male writer, has been accompanied by pain for centuries. Italian poet Dante Alighieri presents a paradoxical treatment of lust by exploring pain and pleasure in Canto XXVI of "Purgatory" in The Divine Comedy. Over four hundred years later, Dante's sexual ideology would evolve into misanthropy and misogyny in T. S. Eliot's poetry. The poetry's aggression towards women begins with "The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock," escalates in "La Figlia che Piange" and "Gerontion," and reaches a violent pinnacle of misanthropy in "Sweeney Erect." Although T. S. Eliot attempted to emulate Dante's passion, his contorted visionary …

Instability And Pattern Formation In The Human Brain During Complex Sensorimotor And Auditory Tasks As Revealed By Magnetoencephalography, Tom Holroyd Jan 1997

Instability And Pattern Formation In The Human Brain During Complex Sensorimotor And Auditory Tasks As Revealed By Magnetoencephalography, Tom Holroyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Following Kelso et al. (1991a; 1992), Wallenstein et al. (1995), Tuller et al. (1994), and Case et al. (1995); see also Fuchs et al. (1992), the experiments described in this research all used a dynamical methodology designed to produce a coherent brain state and then lead that brain state through a spontaneous reorganization via the influence of a parametric change. Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings made during the spontaneous behavioral and perceptual transitions were analyzed by decomposition of the brain's high-dimensional magnetic field into a few task-relevant components. The analysis showed that the dynamics of the MEG signal, including the reorganization which …

Investigating The Effects Of Measured Noise Source Heights On The Predicted Insertion Loss Of Noise Barriers In The New Tnm Software, Charles D. Glynn Jan 1997

Investigating The Effects Of Measured Noise Source Heights On The Predicted Insertion Loss Of Noise Barriers In The New Tnm Software, Charles D. Glynn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

At the present time the Federal Highway Administration is developing a new highway noise prediction model called TNM that is anticipated to be a superior model than its predecessor STAMINA 2.0. TNM will use frequency dependent measured noise source heights as a function of speed, acceleration, pavement type, road grade and vehicle class in its propagation loss and insertion loss calculations. Also, TNM will split the equivalent source height into two sub-sources at specified heights and calculate the insertion loss of noise barriers from these two sub-sources. The accuracy of this concept is investigated in this thesis, and it is …

Locust Years: The Fall Of America's Great Computer Companies And The Consequences, 1980-1994, Eugene F. Bryan Jan 1997

Locust Years: The Fall Of America's Great Computer Companies And The Consequences, 1980-1994, Eugene F. Bryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For three decades a handful of giant American Corporations dominated the world computer industry. In the late 1980s a host of relatively small firms seized industry leadership. Many saw in this astounding reversal of fortune the birth of an open, progressive, highly competitive and democratic computer industry. This thesis contends instead that the fall of the great computer companies, and the rise to leadership of firms that were undercapitalized and shortsighted, threatened the long-term competitive strength of the American computer industry. The historical record shows that multi-billion investments by the great computer companies built the technological foundation for the "age …

Long-Term Stress-Induced Changes In Brain Monoamines Of The Gray Snapper, Lutjanus Griseus. Neurotransmitters As Indicators Of Physiological Stress, Darrin H. Brager Jan 1997

Long-Term Stress-Induced Changes In Brain Monoamines Of The Gray Snapper, Lutjanus Griseus. Neurotransmitters As Indicators Of Physiological Stress, Darrin H. Brager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

It is well established that altered neurotransmitter levels have long been associated with stress in many mammals. The purpose of this study was to determine if changes in the brain tissue concentration and/or turnover rates of the monoamine neurotransmitters could be used as an early indicator of physiological stress for fish in different aquatic ecosystems. Gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus, were collected from two sites, a pristine (control) and a polluted (experimental) site, classification based upon the hydrocarbon content of their sediment. The brains were quickly removed and dissected into three regions: frontal lobes, hypothalamus, and brain stem which were later …

Lucky Socks And Four Bounces: An Anthropological Study Of Ritual In Tennis, Alexandra. Kalnitsky Jan 1997

Lucky Socks And Four Bounces: An Anthropological Study Of Ritual In Tennis, Alexandra. Kalnitsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Tennis, like many sports, demands high levels of performance. To ensure victory athletes try to exclude negative factors. In part this is accomplished through the medium of ritualized behavior. Within the tennis subculture there is a certain etiquette that must be maintained. By conforming to the performance of rituals prior to, during, and after a tennis match the potential for victory has been enhanced. Ritualized behavior serves to eliminate anxiety. Anxiety may lead to a loss in concentration, therefore its eradication can only benefit the player in question. Through observation of individuals within the tennis subculture, it becomes apparent that …

Maximum Entropy Bandwidth Extrapolation Technique Using Wavelet Subspaces, Laura Dominick Vann Jan 1997

Maximum Entropy Bandwidth Extrapolation Technique Using Wavelet Subspaces, Laura Dominick Vann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation is concerned with the development of a bandwidth extrapolation technique that performs maximum entropy estimations over wavelet subspaces. Bandwidth extrapolation techniques have been used in radar applications to improve range and cross range resolution of radar cross section (RCS) images. Comparisons are made of the performance of conventional maximum entropy estimation to maximum entropy estimation over wavelet subspaces. A least squares prediction error measure is used to compare original measured RCS data to extrapolated data. Then a relative error is defined as the ratio of prediction error using conventional maximum entropy to prediction error using maximum entropy over …

Malignant Intimacy: Doubles, Atheists, And Orphans In "Frankenstein Unbound", Stuart Iii Clarry Jan 1997

Malignant Intimacy: Doubles, Atheists, And Orphans In "Frankenstein Unbound", Stuart Iii Clarry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Brian Aldiss's Frankenstein Unbound is both a tribute to and exegesis of Mary Shelley's novel. The central figure, Joseph Bodenland, the 'everyman' of modern technological society, emerges as a composite of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature; he is the pivotal character through whom Aldiss revises and reinterprets Shelley's themes. Bodenland's role as a double reveals how Aldiss has updated Shelley's biographically inspired atheism and psychological orphanhood. As an atheist, Bodenland symbolizes technology and modern society's increasing separation from faith and God. Bodenland's sense of orphanhood suggests humanity's separation from the natural world, and by extension, the loss of individual identity …

Memory Latency Evaluation In Cluster-Based Cache-Coherent Multiprocessor Systems With Different Interconnection Topologies, Abu Sadath Mohammad Asaduzzaman Jan 1997

Memory Latency Evaluation In Cluster-Based Cache-Coherent Multiprocessor Systems With Different Interconnection Topologies, Abu Sadath Mohammad Asaduzzaman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This research investigates memory latency of cluster-based cache-coherent multiprocessor systems with different interconnection topologies. We focus on a cluster-based architecture which is a variation of Stanford DASH architecture. The architecture, also, has some similarities with the STiNG architecture from Sequent Computer System Inc. In this architecture, a small number of processors and a portion of shared-memory are connected through a bus inside each cluster. As the number of processors per cluster is small, snoopy protocol is used inside each cluster. Each processor has two levels of caches and for each cluster a separate directory is maintained. Clusters are connected using …

Modflow Wetland Module Which Relates Interactions With Aquifers And Sloughs, Angela M. Montoya Jan 1997

Modflow Wetland Module Which Relates Interactions With Aquifers And Sloughs, Angela M. Montoya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Natural and anthropogenic processes have altered wetland habitats. The simulation of surface water movement and its interaction with groundwater and slough channels as it relates to wetlands is very important for many projects. Currently, most groundwater flow models incorporate the wetland system as general head boundary nodes. The purpose of this research was to develop a computer package for the widely used MODFLOW code to simulate three-dimensional wetland flow hydroperiods interacting with aquifers and slough channels. The groundwater flow model was used to reproduce surface water flow process through wetlands, estimating new flow rates and values using a Manning type …

Methodology For Object-Oriented Modeling And Design Of Real-Time, Fault-Tolerant Systems, Debera R. Hancock Jan 1997

Methodology For Object-Oriented Modeling And Design Of Real-Time, Fault-Tolerant Systems, Debera R. Hancock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Many methodologies for software modeling and design include some form of static and dynamic modeling to describe the structural and behavioral views respectively. Modeling and design of complex real-time software systems requires notations for describing concurrency, asynchronous event handling, communication between independent machines, timing properties, and accessing real time. Function-oriented structured analysis methodologies such as Ward and Mellor's SA/RT and Harel's Statecharts have provided extensions for real-time system modeling. Dynamic modeling of real time systems using object-oriented methodologies also requires extensions to the traditional state machine notations in order to convey the real time system characteristics and constraints. Shaw's Communicating …

Modeling Use Cases And Their Sequences In Object-Oriented Analysis, Mahbub Morshed Anwar Jan 1997

Modeling Use Cases And Their Sequences In Object-Oriented Analysis, Mahbub Morshed Anwar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Use cases and scenarios are used by most of the object-oriented modeling approaches for capturing users' requirements, analyzing the system and building the test cases. All the different methodologies have different approaches for modeling use cases and applying them to other object-oriented models. Use case models help the analyst to construct dynamic as well as static models. In this thesis, we show an approach of modeling use cases for object-oriented software analysis. We give emphasis to modeling the sequences of the activities within the scenarios and the sequences of the scenarios throughout the system. We show how these sequences influence …

Middle Frequency Target Characteristics, Sabine. Castagnet Jan 1997

Middle Frequency Target Characteristics, Sabine. Castagnet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The problem of inverse scattering where the scattering structure is unknown, and the physical properties are predicted from the measured echo when the target is insonified with known waveforms, is investigated in this thesis. The scattering structure studied is a submerged, evacuated, spherical elastic shell. The formulation of the echo is carried out using thin shell theory for low and middle frequency range, which basically assumes that shear stresses are negligible. The echo is characterized by the form function in the frequency domain, and the impulse response in the time domain. The results of this thesis show that when using …

Naming Man: A Study Of Wallace Stevens's Poetry Titles, George Godfrey Iii Weinschenk Jan 1997

Naming Man: A Study Of Wallace Stevens's Poetry Titles, George Godfrey Iii Weinschenk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The titles of Wallace Stevens's poetry assist in an explication of the poems. Stevens's titling techniques force the reader into a complicit involvement with the text before the commitment to read is even made. By asserting a strong presence in his titles, Stevens is able to engage the reader in an exploration of what is possible for the imagination. He presents his poetry as a foil for the actualization of his audience. Potentials are experienced and made real by this active involvement with the poems, which in turn permits them to reveal their hidden meanings. A recursive responsiveness to Stevens's …
