Integrated Queries To Existing Bibliographic And Structured Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Lu Jan 1997

Integrated Queries To Existing Bibliographic And Structured Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It is widely accepted that future digital library applications have to be built upon different kinds of database servers to draw upon different forms of data, including bibliographic, text, multimedia, and structured data. In this paper, the problem of integrating existing public bibliographic databases and structured databases which reside at different locations in the network is addressed. Although bibliographic data is semistructured, its attribute set is often determined by an international standard known as MARC. To unify bibliographic and structured data, the well-known SQL was extended to model bibliographic related attributes and queries. In particular, a new data type was …

A Hypermedia Database To Manage World-Wide-Web Documents, Schubert Shou Boon Foo, Ee Peng Lim Jan 1997

A Hypermedia Database To Manage World-Wide-Web Documents, Schubert Shou Boon Foo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The surge of interest in the World-Wide-Web (WWW) with its potential commercial payoff has resulted in an explosion of information as organisations join in to publish and do business on the Internet. A related development, Intranet, which basically uses the same technology to build private corporate WWW-based networks, has emerged to provide cost-effective and efficient groupware and information management solutions for organisations. As a result, the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), used for constructing WWW documents, has become a contender for authoring future office documents. With this scenario, this study examines WWW practices and highlights the inadequacy and drawbacks of …

Insect Functional Morphology: A Laboratory Manual, Keith J. Mbata

icipe Manuals

Preface

When the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS) was established at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) Nairobi, Kenya in 1983, the main objective was to strengthen the capabilities of African universities in postgraduate training in arthropod science, using technical expertise and the advanced research facilities already existing at the ICIPE. The multidisciplinary setting of ICIPE’s research programme enables ARPPIS to admit students from a variety of training backgrounds, not limited to entomology. Thus, the programme also admitted graduates of basic sciences such as mathematics and chemistry, who wished to apply their disciplines to …

An Efficient Algorithm For Direct Computation Of Adjacent Block Coefficients In The Transformed Domain, Chaman Sabharwal, Brian Quandt Jan 1997

An Efficient Algorithm For Direct Computation Of Adjacent Block Coefficients In The Transformed Domain, Chaman Sabharwal, Brian Quandt

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current research in many areas of image processing involves operations performed in the compressed domain [Smith and Rowe 1993, Chang 93]. Compressed domain may be DCT, Wavelet, JPEG or MPEG etc. The algorithms for .these transformations may be used for information filtering such as feature extraction and edge detection. The image transformations such as compositing, occluding, and scaling may also be performed in the compressed domain. It is desirable to perform these operations on compressed data directly because the smaller size of data involves less computational complexity. The computation in the compressed domain eliminates the overhead of decoding the …

Artificial Neural Network Based Model For Computation Of Injection Mould Complexity, Rawin Raviwongse, Venkat Allada Jan 1997

Artificial Neural Network Based Model For Computation Of Injection Mould Complexity, Rawin Raviwongse, Venkat Allada

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The cost of injection mould construction depends primarily on the mould complexity. The ability to estimate the mould complexity before releasing the final drawings for construction purposes will greatly help the designers to understand the implications of their design on cost. Mould complexity depends on several factors such as part geometry, parting line, materials, and number of cavities per mould. In most industries, the mould complexity evaluation is performed manually based on past experiences of mould makers. Faced with a shortage of experienced mould makers, there is a pressing need for development of computer-aided tools for mould complexity evaluation. In …

Innovative Applications Of Groupware For Solving Engineering Design Problems, Leslie F. Monplaisir, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Choayuan Lu Jan 1997

Innovative Applications Of Groupware For Solving Engineering Design Problems, Leslie F. Monplaisir, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Choayuan Lu

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In these case studies, groupware was used as a group decision-making environment to assist teams evaluating a quality function deployment framework for risk management and agile manufacturing system designs. In the first case, teams identified customers' requirements and risk categories for a research and development project. They then mapped the relationship between these customer requirements and the risk categories. In the second case, cross-functional teams collaborated in selecting the best layout for a cellular manufacturing facility. These experimental findings support the use of group decision systems by design and project teams required to manage R&D projects or to design agile …

Democracy's Discontent In A Complex World: Can Avalanches, Sandpiles, And Finches Optimize Michael Sandel's Civic Republican Community?, Hope M. Babcock Jan 1997

Democracy's Discontent In A Complex World: Can Avalanches, Sandpiles, And Finches Optimize Michael Sandel's Civic Republican Community?, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Democracy's Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy, Michael Sandel looks about him and finds a vast and complex world governed by impersonal institutions and structures, in which discontented, anxious, and frustrated individuals are losing control over the forces that govern their lives, and in which the moral fabric of community is unraveling. His solution is to revitalize the civic strand of freedom found in republican politics and thus equip individuals to govern themselves. Sandel wonders how civic republicanism can exist in today's world. Historically, republicanism has found a home in small, bounded places, which were largely …

A Law Professor’S Guide To Natural Law And Natural Rights, Randy E. Barnett Jan 1997

A Law Professor’S Guide To Natural Law And Natural Rights, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Law professors nowadays mention natural law and natural rights on a regular basis, and not just in jurisprudence. Given that the founding generation universally subscribed to the idea of natural rights, this concept regularly makes a prominent appearance in discussions of constitutional law. One simply cannot avoid the concept if one is to explain Justice Samuel Chase's well-known claim in Calder v. Bull that "[t]here are certain vital principles in our free Republican governments, which will determine and over-rule an apparent and flagrant abuse of legislative power .... An ACf of the Legislature (for I cannot call it a law) …

Wards Cove Packing Or Not Wards Cove Packing? That Is Not The Question: Some Thoughts On Impact Analysis Under The Age Discrimination In Employment Act, Mack A. Player Jan 1997

Wards Cove Packing Or Not Wards Cove Packing? That Is Not The Question: Some Thoughts On Impact Analysis Under The Age Discrimination In Employment Act, Mack A. Player

University of Richmond Law Review

Assume two employers, A and B. Each gives a separate objective test to select employees for a particular position. Employer A utilizes a pen-and-paper, multiple choice examination that has questions in three major categories: 1) biology and genetics which includes DNA theory, cloning, etc.; 2) astrophysics, with questions about time, space, light relationships, "black holes," novas, etc. and 3) microprocessor engineering, the internet, silicon chips, and the like.

The Constitutional Right To Die: Ethical Considerations, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1997

The Constitutional Right To Die: Ethical Considerations, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this commentary, the author first looks at some ethical reasoning supporting physician-assisted dying. Second, he examines some of the lines that have been drawn between withdrawing and withholding life-sustaining treatment on the one hand, and physician-assisted dying on the other. Finally, he relates both of these matters to constitutional reasoning, beginning with Cruzan and ending with the cases before the Supreme Court at the time of the article's publication.

The Epidemics Of Injecting Drug Use And Blood-Borne Disease: A Public Health Perspective, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1997

The Epidemics Of Injecting Drug Use And Blood-Borne Disease: A Public Health Perspective, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article, the author first examines the mechanism by which blood-borne disease is transmitted through sharing of injection equipment. Thereafter, he presents a public health strategy for reducing multi-person use of contaminated injection equipment. This strategy includes: repealing or modifying current laws and regulations making possession and distribution of sterile injection equipment a criminal offense; implementing syringe exchange programs to expand access to new syringes for users of injection drugs; and counseling, education, and treatment targeted to injecting drug users (IDUs), including those in the prison and health care system. The objective of a public health approach is not …

The Technically Skilled Worker And The Corporation: Dagwood, Dilbert And Beyond, Nancy J. Jensen

University of Richmond Law Review

Corporate America finds itself in a sea of change. This change is the result of many factors including rapid technological developments so revolutionary that some have suggested that a third industrial revolution, the Age of Informatics, is at hand. Dynamic and profound changes in corporate organiza- tions abound as a result of the numerous leveraged buyouts of the 1980s and globalization of the world economy.

Apportioning Basis: Partial Sales, Bargain Sales And The Realization Principle, Stephen B. Cohen Jan 1997

Apportioning Basis: Partial Sales, Bargain Sales And The Realization Principle, Stephen B. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Internal Revenue Code generally taxes appreciation in the value of property only on realization, defined to mean when property is sold or exchanged. In measuring gain on a sale or exchange, an allowance must be made for the return of capital, referred to as basis. Basis offsets the amount realized-that is, the price received for property-in order to calculate taxable gain.

Free Speech At Work: Verbal Harassment As Discriminatory (Mis)Treatment, Deborah Epstein Jan 1997

Free Speech At Work: Verbal Harassment As Discriminatory (Mis)Treatment, Deborah Epstein

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In his reply to my article on workplace harassment law and freedom of speech, Professor Volokh does not respond to my most important critiques of his earlier work. For example, he fails to grapple with the true complexity of the problem by focusing exclusively on one side of this conflict of rights-the burden that the law imposes on workplace expression. Equal attention must be paid to the other side: the harm inflicted by discriminatory speech on employees of a single gender. As I describe in detail in my original piece, these harms may include: an adverse effect on the quantity …

Harm And Money: Against The Insurance Theory Of Tort Compensation, Heidi Li Feldman Jan 1997

Harm And Money: Against The Insurance Theory Of Tort Compensation, Heidi Li Feldman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since the 1980s, tort damages for pain and suffering have excited hue and cry. Twenty-three states currently place statutory limitations on tort damages for pain and suffering: seven states cap damages in general tort cases; an additional sixteen states limit awards solely in medical malpractice cases. Several states also have provisions limiting damages in other, very specific types of tort cases. While some statutes have been invalidated on state constitutional grounds, others have survived judicial scrutiny. At the federal level, both the House of Representatives and the Senate have passed tort-reform bills. Although no compromise legislation has been enacted, this …

Counting Votes And Discounting Holdings In The Supreme Court's Takings Cases, Richard J. Lazarus Jan 1997

Counting Votes And Discounting Holdings In The Supreme Court's Takings Cases, Richard J. Lazarus

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Essay focuses on a dimension of the regulatory takings issue that has received relatively little attention in what is otherwise a vast amount of literature on the topic: Why the Court is so persistently splintered and its precedent so seemingly schizophrenic. Most academic discussion has focused on the sheer difficulty of reconciling the public's firmly held conception of sacrosanct private property rights with the public's increasing demand for restrictions on the exercise of those same rights when they affect others adversely. This Essay's thesis is that reasons for this phenomenon exist beyond those that have dominated the ongoing academic …
