Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg Jun 1997

Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg

Pacific Studies

In the 1980s, the quality of the jobs held by Pacific Islander householders generally improved, while job quality declined for the average American householder. The factors that improved the economic position of a Pacific Islander household--education, work experience, and good English language skills-- were the same as those that improved the position of other households in the United States. Over the decade, Pacific Islander householders generally acquired more of these productive attributes, which helped them to find employment, get access to better jobs, and increase their earnings.

The Efficacy Of Pediatric Pain Management Techniques For Infants During Inoculation Procedures, Kimberly K. Wisdorf-Houtkooper Jun 1997

The Efficacy Of Pediatric Pain Management Techniques For Infants During Inoculation Procedures, Kimberly K. Wisdorf-Houtkooper

Dissertations

In this study four different pre-immunization interventions were compared with respect to their effects on modifying arousal level before an immunization and their effects on the level and duration of distress after the immunization. In addition, the study evaluated whether the infants’ pre-inoculation behavioral state affected their response to a painful stimulus. Data consisting of facial expression, presence or absence of cry, cry duration, and behavioral state were collected prior to, during, and after the inoculation. Forty-two subjects were randomly assigned to one of four soothing conditions. These included: rocking, swaddling, sucking on a pacifier, and a control group.

Cellular Responses In Escherichia Coli To Lethal And Sublethal Doses Of Ozone, Indira Ruth Komanapalli Jun 1997

Cellular Responses In Escherichia Coli To Lethal And Sublethal Doses Of Ozone, Indira Ruth Komanapalli

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ozone is a major component of photochemical smog. High levels of this pollutant, sufficient to affect human health are found in many urban areas worldwide. Though limited studies in humans are supported by extensive findings from animal experiments, a difficulty in interpreting the results of these experiments has lead to an ambiguity on the biochemical mechanism of ozone toxicity. To elucidate the mechanism by which ozone causes cell damage and eventual cell death we conducted a comprehensive study using Escherichia coli K-12 as a model.

Studies on the comparative inactivation of bacteriophage lambda (λ), Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans …

Reference Serum Chemistry And Hematological Values For Spinal Cord Injured Patients, Michael S. Laymon, Antone L. Davis Ii Jun 1997

Reference Serum Chemistry And Hematological Values For Spinal Cord Injured Patients, Michael S. Laymon, Antone L. Davis Ii

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serum chemistry and hematological values from 220 traumatic spinal cord injured patients (157 male and 63 female between the ages of 15-47, with greater than six months from injury) were compiled via chart review. Traumatic spinal cord injured patient’s reference ranges were determined and compared with the general population reference ranges. Reference ranges within the spinal cord population were compared by age, gender, level of injury and chronicity of injury. The reference ranges determined for all groups within this spinal cord population fall within the reference ranges of the general population. This supports recent research which suggests that a decrease …

Dietary Iron And Recurrence Of Colorectal Adenomas, Marilyn Tseng, Robert S. Sandler, E. Robert Greenberg, Jack S. Mandel, Robert W. Haile, John A. Baron Jun 1997

Dietary Iron And Recurrence Of Colorectal Adenomas, Marilyn Tseng, Robert S. Sandler, E. Robert Greenberg, Jack S. Mandel, Robert W. Haile, John A. Baron

Kinesiology and Public Health

Previous research suggests that iron acts as a prooxidant to increase the risk of colorectal neoplasia. This study examined effects of dietary intake of iron on colorectal adenoma recurrence using data from an antioxidant clinical trial. All subjects were free of polyps at study entry but had at least one adenoma removed within the 3 months before enrollment. Follow-up colonoseopies were conducted after 1 and 4 years. Patients who developed one or more adenomatous polyps between years 1 and 4 were classified as cases; all others were controls. Dietary iron intake at baseline and at the end of the study …

Videofluoroscopic Examination As An Objective Evaluation Tool In Multiple Sclerosis Individuals With Dysphagia --- Casereport, Mei-Li Cheng, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang, Chi-Fen Chang, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Multiple sclerosis (MS) may involve different part of central nervous system and is characterized by remission and relapse clinically. However, dysphagia does not happen regularly. The incidence of dysphagia in MS is still in debate. It ranges from 3% to to 33% in limited reports. It could be a persistent or a intermittent symptom with various severity. In previous literature, the evaluation of this disorder was limited in clinical examination and lack of an objective method. We presented a 62-year-old man with MS and dysphagia. He underwent videofluoroscopic examination (VFE) and intensive swallowing training. The VFE demonstrated that the major …

Dealing With Tobacco Use Among Youth: What Can Extension Family And Youth Professionals Do?, Rama B. Radhakrishna, B Alan Snider

Journal of Extension

Tobacco use among teenagers is rising. A survey was conducted to assess the extent of tobacco use among 13,196 7th, 9th and 12th graders in six Pennsylvania counties. Findings indicated that overall 22% of those surveyed currently smoke cigarettes. Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to dislike school and expect a lower grade point average. In addition, smokers are more likely than non-smokers to agree that it is OK to sell tobacco to minors and don't mind being around people who smoke. Extension professions should develop educational programs relative to youth tobacco use. Potential exists for Extension professionals to work …

The Decisions For Health Initiative -- Successful Implementation Strategies, Doris K. Williams

Journal of Extension

This articles describes a number of programming approaches for the the Decisions for Health Initiative. In each case, the activity or project can be carried out with resources at hand or for little or no additional funds. The focus of these Idaho projects is community development and health. While there are other directions projects can take (for example, nutrition and health), Idaho made a conscious decision to take the community development approach. The projects described here can easily be planned and implemented by other states.

A Study On The Differences Of Teaching Mathematics And Science Separately And Integrated, Dori Rodgers

Theses and Dissertations

This study determined if teaching science and mathematics with an integrated approach would increase students' achievement. It also determined whether males or females achieved higher in science and mathematics when taught with the integrated approach. as compared to teaching the two disciplines separately. It determined whether the attitudes of the fourth grade students improved when mathematics and science were taught with an integrated approach.

The group participating in this study consisted of one fourth grade class. The total population of the study was sixteen fourth grade, heterogeneously grouped students. The class consisted of twelve female and four male students.

Growth Of Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, In A Contaminated And An Uncontaminated Site, Suruchi Bhan

Theses

Previous experiments have found that grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, from a contaminated site, Piles Creek (PC). in Linden. New Jersey, are larger than those from a relatively pristine reference site, Sheepshead Creek, located in Tuckerton (T), New Jersey.

This study investigated the possibility that PC conditions provide more food for the shrimp, possibly by being a eutrophic environment. thus allowing for greater growth. or that salinity, toxicants, or other factors at. PC stimulate growth. The current experiment indicated that PC conditions do not foster greater growth for the shrimp than T conditions and that PC shrimp are not inherently …
