Health Programs Which Improve The Marketability Of Calves, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Health Programs Which Improve The Marketability Of Calves, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

The “winds of change” have the potential to drastically change the marketing of beef calves in the next few years. Economic pressures may force greater conformity in the way cow-calf producers manage and prepare their calves for market. Those who are slow to conform may be at a disadvantage for marketing.

Disease Resistance In Cattle, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Disease Resistance In Cattle, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

The ability of cattle to resist the many disease processes to which they are exposed is truly amazing. And yet, when several adverse factors combine, this resistance can be overcome and result in a herd disaster which is just as amazing. This discussion will be broken down into four major areas. But it is the combined functioning of all four areas that actually provides disease resistance.

Management For Weaning Healthy, Marketable Calves, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Weaning is an extremely stressful time for beef calves and involves the potential for severe economic loss. The most common problems usually involve respiratory and/or digestive diseases. Weaned calves should be retained for 3–6 weeks after weaning.

Agricultural Research Division 111th Annual Report 1997 Jun 1997

Agricultural Research Division 111th Annual Report 1997

Agricultural Research Division: News and Annual Reports

It is a pleasure to provide you with the 111th Annual Report of the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research Division (ARD). Once a year we take the opportunity to assess what has been accomplished by our faculty, students, and staff during the past twelve months. In looking at the report, one cannot help but be impressed with the increasing outputs from our research program, but more important is the new technology and knowledge provided to Nebraskans to improve the profitability and competitiveness of their enterprises, to enhance the environment, and to improve their quality of life.

This report provides some …

1. Significant Developments During the Academic Year 1995-96 During much of this time, the main galleries were closed due to the extensive renovations of the performing arts spaces and the shared lobby area in the Fine Arts Center. We slowly began to emerge during the months of April and May, but full operations could not resume until fall. Needless to say, this extended period of working around reconfigured storage (all prints and photographs were temporarily housed in the main gallery) and non-existent exhibition space was difficult for the staff; for our general public, and - especially - for faculty and …

Environmental Radon Decay Products In Neurological Diseased And Non-Diseased Brains, And Brains Of Cigarette Smokers., Hassaan Ahmad Alkhatib

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study was to measure alpha and beta emissions of $\sp{210}$Po (alpha emissions), $\sp{210}$Pb and $\sp{210}$Bi (beta emissions) from brain samples which were obtained at autopsy from persons who were clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), or Controls (no known neurological diseases) and cigarette smokers (SMK). The samples were digested, processed and analyzed for alpha and beta emissions.Measurement of alpha and beta radiation activity in tissues can be used to demonstrate prior exposure of tissues to environmental radioisotopes and/or their decay products. In the present study alpha emissions from brain tissues were measured with …

Translated Opinions

Facts: The petitioner, an organization for the protection of animal rights, petitioned the magistrate court to issue an injunction against the respondents, which would prohibit the show they presented, which included a battle between a man and an alligator. The magistrate court, holding that the battle in question constituted cruelty to animals, which was prohibited under section 2 of the Cruelty to Animals Law (Protection of Animals)-1994. The respondents appealed this order to the district court, which cancelled the injunction. The petitioners requested leave to appeal this decision to this Court.

Held: The Court held that the show in question …

Fertigation Chemicals, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

When deciding what chemicals to inject, there are numerous considerations to be made. This paper addresses some of the more common factors which should be considered, but which are often overlooked. Because nitrogen fertilizer is injected more widely than any other nutrient, special attention is given to it

New Public - Private Sector Equation, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jun 1997

New Public - Private Sector Equation, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Economically successful developing countries have evolved a new pattern of mutually beneficial and socially productive partnership between the Government and the private sector. In Pakistan, on the other hand, we are still clinging to an outdated, obsolete and highly damaging (from the societal viewpoint) mode of public-private interactions. There is a growing skepticism that the economic packages announced in the last few months in good faith and sensible in their overall thrust will fail to bring about the desired results because of the apathy of the private sector. But it is the longer term effects of the current pattern ofthe …

Regulation Of The Rat Liver Sodium-Dependent Bile Acid Cotransporter Gene By Prolactin. Mediation Of Transcriptional Activation By Stat5, Tanmoy C. Ganguly, Michelle L. O'Brien, Saul J. Karpen, James F. Hyde, Fredrick J. Suchy, Mary Vore Jun 1997

Regulation Of The Rat Liver Sodium-Dependent Bile Acid Cotransporter Gene By Prolactin. Mediation Of Transcriptional Activation By Stat5, Tanmoy C. Ganguly, Michelle L. O'Brien, Saul J. Karpen, James F. Hyde, Fredrick J. Suchy, Mary Vore

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

The intracellular mechanism(s) underlying the upregulation of the hepatic Na+/taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (ntcp) by prolactin (PRL) are unknown. In this report, we demonstrate a time-dependent increase in nuclear translocation of phosphorylated liver Stat5 (a member of the ignal ransducers and ctivators of ranscription family) that correlated with suckling-induced increases in serum PRL levels. In electrophoretic mobility gel shift assays, nuclear Stat5 exhibited specific DNA-binding ability towards IFN-gamma-activated sequence (GAS)-like elements (GLEs; 5'TTC/A-PyNPu-G/TAA-3') located in the -937 to -904 bp region of the ntcp promoter. Transient cotransfections in HepG2 cells revealed that PRL inducibility (2.5-3-fold) required coexpression of the long form …
